If you used ModHeader to add, change or remove HTTP headers in Chrome, the safe path is to save your existing rules first, confirm exactly which ModHeader listing you installed, choose a replacement only after checking that it supports the rule types you use, and then test each rule against a live request. There is no single confirmed successor. Several listings carry similar names, and a 2026 report about store removals is based on secondary reporting rather than an official notice, so the steps below avoid assuming more than the evidence supports.

What “gone” means, and which ModHeader you mean

“ModHeader is gone” is not one event. Three separate things are visible in the available evidence:

  • A 2026 report describes ModHeader being removed from browser extension stores. That account comes from secondary news coverage. The available evidence did not include an official platform notice or a primary security report, so the cause, timeline and scope of the removals are not established here.
  • The official ModHeader website and its FAQ still exist as a publisher source for the product.
  • Separate Chrome Web Store listings called ModHeader V2 and ModHeader V3 exist. A shared name does not establish a shared publisher or a successor relationship. Confirm the publisher on each listing before you treat any of them as the same product.

Before you change anything, write down the browser you use, the extension ID and publisher shown on the installed extension’s page, and the version number. Those details tell you which copy of ModHeader you actually have, and they matter when you compare exports and rules later.

Save your rules before you remove anything

Your header rules are the asset you cannot easily rebuild, so export them while the extension still works. Do not assume an export can be recovered later from a store listing that has been removed.

  1. Open the installed ModHeader extension and go to its settings or options page. Menu labels differ between versions, so look for an export, backup or save option in the version you have.
  2. Export the full set of profiles, not only the profile you use most. Rules are often spread across several profiles, and a single export can miss inactive ones.
  3. Store the file somewhere outside the browser profile, and keep a plain-text copy of any rule that depends on a URL pattern, tab restriction or cookie value.
  4. Open the exported file and confirm it contains each header name, header value, filter and profile you expect. If the file is empty or incomplete, stop and record the rules by hand before you remove the extension.

Candidate replacements and what the evidence shows

The table below lists only what the available sources establish. Where a source does not state a value, the cell says so instead of implying a yes or no.

Candidate Where it appears Import of ModHeader JSON Request and response header support Publisher identity Cookie and Set-Cookie handling
Honest Headers Chrome Web Store listing Advertised by its listing as able to import ModHeader JSON exports Not stated in the evidence reviewed Shown on its store listing; not independently verified Not stated in the evidence reviewed
ModHeader V2 Chrome Web Store listing and its source repository The repository documents a ModHeader-formatted import and export flow Not stated in the evidence reviewed Not confirmed as the historic publisher Not stated in the evidence reviewed
ModHeader V3 Chrome Web Store listing Not stated in the evidence reviewed Not stated in the evidence reviewed Not confirmed as the historic publisher Not stated in the evidence reviewed
Requestly Mentioned only in a user-generated discussion Not verified Not verified Not verified Not verified

An import claim on a store page tells you the developer intends the extension to read that format. It does not prove that every rule type, profile setting or filter will arrive intact. You still have to test each rule.

Honest Headers

Its listing advertises importing ModHeader JSON exports, which makes it a natural first candidate to test. Treat that as a claim to verify with your own export, not as proof of full compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ModHeader V2

The source repository for ModHeader V2 documents an import and export flow in the ModHeader format. That is useful for checking file structure. It does not establish that the listing is operated by the same people as the original product, so verify the publisher before you rely on it for anything sensitive.

ModHeader V3

A separate Chrome listing exists under this name. The evidence reviewed did not establish its feature set, import support or publisher, so it should be evaluated the same way as any unfamiliar extension.

Requestly appears only in a user-generated discussion. Nothing reviewed confirms that it can read a ModHeader export or reproduce your rules, so check it against the same test set as the other candidates before you move anything to it.

Checklist for judging any candidate

  • Browser and store: the listing is for the browser you use, and the publisher name matches what you expect.
  • Header direction: it can add or change request headers and, if you need them, response headers. Confirm this in the listing or repository, not in the extension’s marketing copy.
  • Cookie handling: it states how it treats Cookie and Set-Cookie headers, if your rules touch them.
  • Filters: it supports the URL patterns, tab restrictions, resource types and profile switching you use.
  • Import format: it reads the export file you saved, or documents a conversion path.
  • Storage and data: it states where rules are stored and whether anything leaves your browser. Treat these as publisher statements.
  • Permissions: the permissions it requests match the job. A header tool that asks for broad access to every site should have a clear reason.

Move your rules step by step

  1. Confirm the exact ModHeader listing, publisher, browser and version you had installed, using the record you made earlier.
  2. Pick one candidate that documents support for the browser and rule types you need. Do not install several copies of header-modifying extensions at once, because overlapping rules can conflict.
  3. If the candidate offers a test or separate profile, import your saved export there first. Otherwise, create a dedicated browser profile for the test.
  4. Compare each imported rule with your original record. Check the header name, the header value, the URL or tab filter, whether the rule is enabled, and which profile it belongs to.
  5. Re-enter by hand any rule that did not import cleanly, and mark it as manual so you do not confuse it with an imported rule later.
  6. Run the validation steps below on a controlled endpoint you control before you use the rules on real sites.
  7. Only after the rules behave as expected, disable and then remove the old extension. Do this after you have checked the affected listing’s security advice, as described below.

Validate each rule against a real request

An extension showing a rule as enabled does not show that the header reached the server. Check both sides of the exchange:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Point the rule at an endpoint you control, such as a test page or a simple echo service on a server you run. Log the headers the server receives.
  • Open the browser’s developer tools, go to the Network panel, and inspect the request headers for a matching request. Compare them with the value in your rule.
  • For response-header rules, inspect the response headers in the same Network panel entry and confirm the value after the extension has acted.
  • Repeat the test with the tab or profile filter in both the matching and non-matching state, so you know the rule does not leak to other tabs.
  • Record the outcome for each rule. A rule that works only on a test page but not on the real target needs investigation before you rely on it.

Browser limits that can break a migrated rule

Some failures come from the browser, not from the replacement extension. Chrome’s webRequest documentation says that some request headers are unavailable or cannot be modified without the extraHeaders option, and that changes to headers can affect CORS checks. The same documentation says that changing response headers does not bypass CORS checks. A rule that relied on a legacy behavior around cross-origin requests may therefore not behave the same way after migration.

Chrome’s declarativeNetRequest documentation describes header modification through declarative rules, including how rules interact by priority. If a replacement uses that API, rules that overlap may resolve differently than they did in ModHeader. MDN’s header modification reference notes that supported operations and permissions differ between browsers, so a rule that works in Chrome may not work the same way in another browser.

The original ModHeader author’s 2022 post on Manifest V3 described expected limits on some cookie and response-header workflows. Read it as historical context about why some older rules were hard to carry over, not as a current statement of what any extension can do.

Security and privacy statements on store pages

Store listings often describe how an extension handles data, such as keeping rules local or not collecting browsing data. Treat those statements as the publisher’s own disclosures. They are not an independent audit. The evidence reviewed did not include an official incident notice or a primary security report about the ModHeader removals, so this article does not state a cause, an exposure scope or a specific remediation step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you can do without that information: check which extensions can read and change data on the sites you visit, remove any that you no longer need, and rotate any secret you stored in a header value, such as an API token, if you had reason to believe the old extension had access to it. Do this based on your own risk assessment rather than on a notice this article cannot verify.

Troubleshooting a migrated rule

  • The rule is enabled but the server never receives the header: check the URL or tab filter first, then confirm the request is not blocked by another extension.
  • The header reaches the server but the page fails: a cross-origin check may now be rejecting the request. Look at the console and the Network panel for CORS errors.
  • The header appears on some tabs but not others: check whether the replacement scopes rules by tab or profile, and whether the profile you imported into is the one you are testing.
  • Two rules conflict: disable one and retest. Overlapping rules in a declarative system may be resolved by priority rather than by order in the list.
  • A cookie value does not change: confirm the rule targets the header you intended, and check whether the replacement supports the cookie behavior you need.

What to do if you cannot import everything

Some rules will not move cleanly. Keep the original export file, record which rules failed and why, and rebuild those rules by hand in the replacement. Do not remove the old extension until the rules you need are working on your test endpoint, because the original export is your only complete record of what you had.
