A printer stuck on “Searching for Network” usually means it has not found, or cannot join, the Wi-Fi network you chose. The fix is rarely a single setting. Put the printer back into Wi-Fi setup mode, restart the printer, router, and setup device, confirm the printer can use your router’s Wi-Fi band and network name, and then retry setup from the manufacturer’s app or wizard. The steps below follow official HP and Epson guidance. Menu labels, button sequences, and supported bands vary by model, so use your printer’s own manual for exact key presses.

What “Searching for Network” actually tells you

That message means the printer, or the app guiding setup, has not yet detected the network you want it to join. It is a symptom with several possible causes: the printer is not in Wi-Fi setup mode, the router broadcasts a band or network name the printer cannot use, the signal is weak or disrupted, or the printer still holds an old network profile. Brands label this screen differently, so treat the wording as a general description rather than an exact match for your display.

Check these before you start

  • The setup device is on the target network. The phone or computer running setup should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network (SSID) you want the printer to join. HP’s official guidance asks users to reconnect the setup device to that SSID when diagnosing a connection problem.
  • You have the exact network name and password. Both are case-sensitive, and a similar-looking network from a neighbour or a guest network can cause confusion.
  • You know which Wi-Fi bands the printer supports. Check the networking section of the printer’s specifications. Some models require 2.4 GHz, while others also support 5 GHz. Do not assume every printer is 2.4 GHz only.
  • The printer is reasonably close to the router. Distance and obstacles matter most when the printer is at the edge of coverage.

Step-by-step fix

  1. Restore Wi-Fi setup mode. On the printer’s control panel, open the wireless or network setup menu and choose the option that restores or starts Wi-Fi setup. Labels and button combinations differ by model, so follow the manual for your exact printer. HP’s official troubleshooting page states: “Restore Wi-Fi setup mode if the printer is not found during software setup or when the wireless connection is lost.” For applicable HP models, return to the HP app and finish setup within two hours of restoring setup mode. If that window passes, restore setup mode again.
  2. Restart all three devices. Power off the printer, the router, and the phone or computer used for setup. Turn the router back on first and wait for its lights to settle, then power on the printer and the setup device. If the router needs a fuller restart, follow the router maker’s or your internet provider’s procedure.
  3. Retry setup from the manufacturer’s app or wizard. Use the setup device on the target network, start setup again, and select the printer when it appears. If the printer still does not appear, move on to the next steps rather than repeating the same attempt.
  4. Check the band and network name. If the printer needs 2.4 GHz and your router broadcasts a combined 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network under one name, the printer may not see it. Epson’s general guidance advises giving the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands separate SSID names when a shared name prevents connection. Changing router settings depends on the router’s interface, so consult the router’s documentation or your provider before editing anything.
  5. Use WPS only if both devices support it. WPS is an optional route, not a requirement. See the WPS section below.
  6. Improve signal and run a diagnostic report. Move the printer closer to the router, clear obstacles, and keep it away from common sources of 2.4 GHz interference such as microwave ovens and some cordless devices. Then run the printer’s wireless test or network connection report if the model offers one. HP advises checking its Wireless Network Test report and signal information. Epson advises a network connection report for codes and messages where available. Report names and availability are model-specific.
  7. Escalate with specific details. If the printer still cannot find the network, go to the manufacturer’s support page for your exact model and be ready to share the information in the checklist below.

Wi-Fi band and network name problems

Band mismatch is one of the more common reasons a printer cannot see a network that other devices use without trouble. Many modern routers combine 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz under a single name, and an older or 2.4 GHz-only printer may not be able to select it. Check whether your router offers a separate 2.4 GHz network name. If it does and your printer supports 2.4 GHz, connect the printer to that name. If the router only offers a combined name, Epson’s guidance is to separate the two bands into distinct SSIDs and then connect the printer to the 2.4 GHz one. Keep your phone or computer on the network you choose for setup, because a setup device on a different band or name will not help the printer find the target network.

When WPS is the right route

WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) lets the printer join a network by pressing a button on the router rather than typing a password. It is only useful when both the printer and the router support it. Epson’s guidance specifies that you select a WPS option on the printer within two minutes after pressing the router’s WPS button. If you miss that window, press the router button again and start over. If either device does not support WPS, skip this route and use the manual wireless setup flow in your model’s manual.

What to gather before contacting support

Support teams can resolve a stuck setup much faster if you provide the following:

  • The exact printer model and the router model.
  • Whether the printer sees other Wi-Fi network names, and whether your target network appears in that list.
  • Which bands and network names your router broadcasts.
  • The setup method you used: app, wizard, control-panel selection, or WPS.
  • Any error message, code, or report result shown by the printer or app.

Avoid a factory reset as a first step. Use it only when the printer’s official guidance for your model calls for it, because it removes all saved settings and can make the next setup attempt longer.
