To stop trackpad momentum on an iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control and turn off Trackpad Inertia. Apple lists this control only when a supported multi-touch trackpad is connected, so the setting will not appear with nothing attached.
Turn off Trackpad Inertia
Trackpad Inertia controls whether pointer and scroll movement keeps going after your fingers leave the trackpad. Turning it off is the documented way to reduce that continued movement on iPad. Apple’s iPadOS 26 user guide places the option under Pointer Control, and it is the only inertia toggle in the iPad settings.
- Connect a supported multi-touch trackpad to the iPad over Bluetooth.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility, then tap Pointer Control. Apple’s guide describes this as: “Go to Settings > Accessibility > Pointer Control, then adjust any of the following.”
- Turn Trackpad Inertia off.
- Test by moving two fingers across the trackpad and lifting them. Movement should no longer carry on after your fingers lift, and the change applies to the trackpad you have connected.
Apple does not publish a stopping time for this setting, so treat “immediately” as the behavior you should observe rather than a measured figure.

Several trackpad controls sit near Trackpad Inertia in General settings. They change speed and direction, not momentum, so changing them will not fix a pointer that keeps drifting.
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Trackpad is wireless and rechargeable, and it includes the full range of Multi-Touch gestures and Force Touch technology.
- Sensors underneath the trackpad surface detect subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply, bringing more functionality to your fingertips and enabling a deeper connection to your content.
- It features a large edge-to-edge glass surface area, making scrolling and swiping through your favourite content more productive and comfortable than ever.
- Magic Trackpad pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work straightaway.
- The rechargeable battery will power it for about a month or more between charges.
| Setting | Where Apple lists it | What it changes | Effect on continued movement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trackpad Inertia | Accessibility > Pointer Control | Whether movement continues after input ends | Yes. This is the documented toggle. |
| Tracking Speed | General > Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse | How far the pointer moves for a given finger movement | Not stated as an inertia control |
| Natural Scrolling | General > Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse | Direction that content scrolls | Not stated as an inertia control |
The General path name depends on the connected accessory and iPadOS version. Apple uses both “Trackpad” and “Trackpad & Mouse” for these settings, so match the label you see on your screen.
Troubleshooting
- Trackpad Inertia is missing. Confirm that a supported multi-touch trackpad is connected and paired. Apple’s guide does not provide a full list of compatible accessories, so check the accessory’s own documentation if the trackpad is an older model.
- The pointer moves too fast. Lower the speed in General > Trackpad or Trackpad & Mouse using Tracking Speed. Inertia is unaffected by this change.
- Scrolling goes the wrong way. Adjust Natural Scrolling in the same General trackpad settings.
- Gestures do not respond at all. Apple states that Bluetooth mouse or trackpad use requires iPadOS 13.4 or later. Update iPadOS first, then reconnect the accessory.
- Apple’s first-generation accessories. Apple’s support article says the Magic Mouse (1st generation) and Magic Trackpad (1st generation) do not support scrolling or other gestures with iPadOS, so inertia settings will not help with those devices.
Why Mac instructions do not apply
macOS has its own inertia control under Mac Pointer Control settings, and Apple’s Mac guide says that when inertia is off, scrolling stops immediately. Those steps do not transfer to iPad. On an iPad, use Accessibility > Pointer Control as described above.
