No. Laser at AMC means the auditorium uses laser projection; it does not, by itself, mean the movie is playing in IMAX. IMAX is a separate branded presentation format that can also use laser projection. To know what you are booking, check the format listed for the specific screening and auditorium.
What does “Laser at AMC” mean?
Laser at AMC is AMC’s laser-projection offering. AMC describes it as powered by Barco and says it is designed to provide brighter, more uniform illumination, improved contrast and color, and lower energy use than traditional xenon lamps. AMC’s 2025 Form 10-K says the projectors provide guaranteed light levels at the top end of the 2D DCI specification and improve contrast, color, and brightness compared with xenon digital projectors. These are AMC’s descriptions of the technology, not independent tests comparing every auditorium.
AMC’s wording has changed over time: its 2022 launch announcement called the offering “powered by Cinionic,” the Barco cinema joint venture; its current consumer page and 2025 filing name Barco. AMC’s Laser at AMC page and 2022 launch announcement provide those descriptions.
How is IMAX different?
IMAX is a proprietary cinema presentation system, not simply a projector type. IMAX with Laser combines laser projection with IMAX technology, screens, and sound. IMAX describes its laser system as 4K and 12-channel, with design features including sharper, brighter images, deeper contrast, expanded color, and additional side and overhead sound channels. Those are IMAX’s product descriptions; equipment and presentation can vary by location and film. See IMAX’s description of IMAX with Laser.

The terms can overlap: an IMAX auditorium can use laser projection. AMC lists IMAX at AMC and Laser at AMC as separate premium offerings, and also describes laser projection in select IMAX auditoriums and other premium formats. Its premium offerings page shows the separate format labels; PRIME at AMC is an example of another AMC-branded format that can include laser.
What has AMC announced about its laser and IMAX locations?
Laser at AMC rollout
In its 2025 Form 10-K, AMC reported that 2,951 of 3,500 planned U.S. Laser at AMC installations were complete as of December 31, 2025. It expected the initial U.S. installation program to finish during 2026. The filing also reported 96 installations in international markets as of that date. These are year-end figures and a stated expectation, not confirmation that the rollout is now complete. Read AMC’s 2025 Form 10-K.

IMAX with Laser expansion
On April 1, 2025, AMC and IMAX announced plans for 12 new IMAX locations and upgrades at 68 existing IMAX locations, with more than 180 IMAX with Laser locations planned across AMC’s U.S. circuit. The announcement described deployment as taking place “in the coming years”; it does not establish that each location has since been upgraded. See the April 2025 IMAX announcement.
Which should you choose: Laser at AMC or IMAX?
There is no universal winner based on the labels alone. Laser identifies projection technology; IMAX identifies a broader branded presentation. The actual experience depends on the auditorium, the movie, and the screening. Compare the local listing rather than assuming every screen carrying a format name has identical equipment or presentation.

- Stunning picture with 4K upscaling up to 60p
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cable
- Listen to music from multiple formats
- Format: Check whether the showtime is labeled IMAX, Laser at AMC, or both.
- Screen and room: Look at the specific auditorium; the label alone does not establish its screen size or layout.
- Movie presentation: Check whether that film and screening advertise IMAX, 3D, or an expanded-aspect-ratio presentation.
- Sound and seating: Review the theatre’s listed audio and seating features, which can vary by location or format.
- Practical fit: Compare the actual ticket price and showtime available at your AMC.
Without independent, location-specific measurements, claims such as “laser is always brighter,” “IMAX is always bigger,” or one format is categorically better are not established for every AMC screening.
