Amazon’s new Alexa Tablets can use what is on your screen to answer questions, but only after you turn on a feature called On-Screen Intelligence. When it is enabled, Alexa reads the content in front of you and gives help based on it, such as pulling details from a web page or turning a schedule into calendar entries. You can also let Alexa keep following the screen during a continuous live conversation. The feature is off by default, and the descriptions below come from Amazon’s own product announcement, which is the only source for the capabilities, prices and launch dates in this article.
What On-Screen Intelligence does
Amazon says On-Screen Intelligence lets you ask Alexa to look at what is displayed and give real-time, context-specific help. Amazon’s examples are asking which hiking trail suits you best while you are browsing trail options, and asking Alexa to take game dates from a sports schedule and add them to a calendar while flagging any conflicts. In both cases the answer depends on the content on the screen rather than on a general knowledge query.
Amazon describes two ways the feature is used:
- Single questions: you ask about something visible, and Alexa answers using that content.
- Live sessions: you keep a continuous conversation going without saying the wake word between questions, and Alexa can follow changes on the screen as you move through them.
How screen sharing works in a live session
Screen sharing is a choice you make within a live session, and it is only available once On-Screen Intelligence is enabled. Amazon’s example is a recipe open on Pinterest or a product shown in a TikTok video. If you share the screen, Alexa can track the content as it changes, so you do not have to describe each step or item again. If you do not share it, the live conversation continues without Alexa viewing the display.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAmazon does not publish a step-by-step menu path for starting a live session or sharing the screen in its announcement, so check the on-device prompts and the Alexa app for the exact controls on your tablet once it is set up.

Privacy controls Amazon describes
Amazon’s position is that screen viewing is a deliberate, user-controlled setting rather than something that runs by default. According to the announcement:
- On-Screen Intelligence is off by default and must be turned on by the user.
- You can enable or disable it in Settings.
- A visual indicator appears when Alexa can see the screen.
- You choose when Alexa listens, when it sees the screen, and what it remembers.
Amazon’s Kevin Keith, Vice President, Devices, puts the principle this way in the announcement: “Every On-Screen Intelligence feature is off by default and requires a deliberate opt-in.” These are Amazon’s statements about how the product is designed. They have not been independently verified, and this article does not treat them as a privacy guarantee.

Which model fits what you want to do
- Heavy screen-based questions and a larger display: the 12 Pro offers the most memory and storage at the highest announced price, and it is the only model Amazon lists with the Nanomatte finish option.
- A mid-range 11-inch tablet with more memory than the 8: the 11 is the model with the display details Amazon published, at $329.99.
- Lowest entry price: the 8 starts at $229.99 but has 4GB of RAM, half the memory of the 11 and 12 Pro.
- Writing or drawing: consider the Pro Pen if you choose a Pro model, bearing in mind that its announced price is $89.99.
What the announcement does not establish
Amazon’s announcement is the source for the announced features, specifications, prices and dates. It does not include independent benchmarks, hands-on testing, or evaluation of how accurately On-Screen Intelligence interprets different apps or screens. It also does not state that the feature works reliably with every app or website. Treat the examples above as Amazon’s illustrations, and test the feature on your own content after setup.
