A phone feels like yours when its appearance, interruptions, and access to your data match how you actually use it. Five settings cover most of that ground: dark theme and color scheme, Bedtime display options, Focus mode and app timers, lock-screen notifications, and app permissions. None of them is required, and the exact labels depend on your Android version and phone manufacturer. This guide describes what Google’s documentation says each one does, so you can decide which ones fit your habits.
Before you start
- Check your Android version. Settings menus differ between releases. Some color-scheme options require Android 13 or later, according to Google Android Help.
- Use Settings search. Manufacturers such as Samsung, Google Pixel, and others rename or group menus differently. If a label below does not match your screen, search Settings for the keyword in the step.
- Work and school phones may be restricted. Organization-managed accounts can block some options, such as app timers.
1. Dark theme and color scheme
Dark theme changes the system’s backgrounds and text to light-on-dark, and on some devices it also adjusts color schemes in supported apps.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Dark theme and turn it on, or choose a schedule if your phone offers one.
- For color-scheme options, look for the color scheme controls in the same area. Google’s help article states: “You can change the color scheme of some screens and apps on your Android device and phone.”
Two behaviors can surprise you. On some phones, Battery Saver turns Dark theme on automatically, so if your screen suddenly looks dark, check Battery Saver before assuming a bug. Android Developers documentation says dark theme can reduce power use “depending on the device’s screen technology.” That means the saving depends on the display panel. It is not a fixed amount, and no reliable percentage has been published for general use.
2. Bedtime display options
Digital Wellbeing’s Bedtime mode can apply display changes while it is active. Depending on your phone, the options may include grayscale, dimming the wallpaper, keeping the screen dark, and dark theme. To find it, open Settings, search for Digital Wellbeing, and look for Bedtime mode. Not every option appears on every device, so expect a shorter list on some phones than the one described here.

3. Focus mode and app timers
Focus mode pauses selected apps and silences their notifications while it is active. You can start it manually, schedule it, or take a temporary break. App timers set a daily limit for a specific app. Both live in Digital Wellbeing, according to Google Android Help.
- Pick a small list first. Pausing messaging or social apps during work hours is a common starting point, but the right list depends on your routine.
- Expect blocked alerts. Paused apps will not notify you until Focus mode ends. Check whether anyone needs to reach you during those hours.
- Timers can be limited on work and school accounts. Google notes that some of these accounts may not support app timers.
4. Lock-screen notifications
The lock-screen notification controls (usually found under Settings > Notifications, though labels vary) let you decide how much appears when the phone is locked. Google’s security and privacy guidance treats this as a trade-off:

- Hide sensitive content to keep message previews and account details out of view when someone else picks up the phone. The cost is that you have to unlock the phone to see what arrived.
- Show content so alerts are easier to scan at a glance. The cost is that anyone who sees the screen can read those previews.
Digital Wellbeing also shows notification counts by app, which helps you decide which apps are worth keeping loud.

5. App permissions
Android’s official privacy page describes three choices for many permissions: allow access only while you use the app, allow it one time, or deny it. Android can also reset permissions for apps you have not opened in a while. Review permissions app by app rather than denying everything at once. Location, camera, and microphone are the usual candidates for a closer look, but a map app or video call app may stop working properly if you deny the permission it depends on.

- Open Settings and go to Apps (or search for the app by name).
- Select the app and open Permissions.
- For each permission, pick While using the app, Ask every time or Allow only this time if offered, or Don’t allow.
Newer customization: Android 16
Google’s December 2, 2025 announcement of Android 16 described custom icon shapes and an expanded dark theme. These depend on your release and manufacturer. If your phone does not show them after updating, the feature may not be available on your device yet.

Where to start
If the phone feels cluttered, start with dark theme and Focus mode, since those change daily use most visibly. If it feels exposed, start with lock-screen notifications and app permissions. Change one setting at a time and use the phone for a day or two before adding the next. That makes it easier to notice which change actually helped and which one caused a problem.

The settings that make a phone feel like yours are the ones that fix a specific annoyance: glare at night, too many alerts, or apps that can see more than they need to. Start with the one that matches your most frequent complaint, and check your Android version and manufacturer labels before following any step.
