You pair a Fitbit through the Google Health app on your phone. Google’s current instructions do not treat the phone’s Bluetooth settings screen as a setup route, so start in the app even if your phone shows a nearby device. The steps below cover first-time setup, adding a Fitbit to an existing account, and a cautious sequence for fixing a connection that keeps failing.
Before you pair your Fitbit
Check these four things before you open the app. Most setup failures trace back to one of them.
- Phone operating system: Android 11 or higher, or iOS 16.4 or higher, according to Google’s Google Health app setup requirements page as checked in early October 2026. Google may change these minimums, so confirm them on that page if the app refuses to install or sign in.
- Google Account: setup requires one. You can use an existing account or create a new one during setup.
- Bluetooth: switched on in your phone’s settings.
- Battery: the Fitbit should be charged before you start. Google’s setup instructions tell you to connect the device to its charger first.
A phone that meets the operating system minimum can still have compatibility problems with specific models, and Google notes this on the same requirements page. If setup fails on a supported version, check the compatibility details there before you try the fixes below.

If the charger that came with your Fitbit is missing or damaged, buy a replacement that is listed for your exact Fitbit model. Pair a Fitbit with an Android phone or iPhone
The app flow is the same on both platforms. Install Google Health from Google Play on Android or from the App Store on iPhone. Menu labels can differ slightly between app and device versions, so follow the on-screen prompts if a label below does not match what you see.
- Install or update the Google Health app and open it.
- Sign in with your Google Account.
- Keep the charged Fitbit close to the phone. Some devices show a setup notification when they are near the phone. If one appears, follow it.
- If no notification appears, go to the app’s setup route described in the next two sections. Do not pair from the phone’s Bluetooth screen.
Adding a Fitbit to an existing account
- In Google Health, tap Connections.
- Tap Add device.
- Select your Fitbit and follow the on-screen prompts until the device is connected.
Setting up a new account
- Open Google Health and sign in with Google.
- Follow the prompts to create the account.
- When the app asks, connect your Fitbit device.

Fitbit won’t connect? Try these fixes
Work through these checks in order. Each step is less disruptive than the one after it, so stop as soon as the Fitbit connects.

Basic checks first
- The Fitbit is charged.
- The Google Health app and your phone’s operating system are up to date and still meet the requirements listed above.
- Bluetooth is on.
Android-specific checks
On Android, power and location settings can block setup even when Bluetooth is working.
- Turn off Power Saving Mode. The exact menu depends on your phone maker, so use the search function in Settings and search for “Power Saving.”
- Make sure Location Services are on.
- Confirm that Google Health has permission to use location. Find it under the app’s permissions in your phone’s settings.
Reset the Bluetooth connection
- Turn phone Bluetooth off.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Turn Bluetooth back on and retry setup.
Restart both devices
- Restart the Fitbit. The restart method varies by model, so use the instructions for your model.
- Restart your phone.
- Open Google Health and retry setup.
Check the account’s device limit
Google’s instructions say that only one Fitbit device or Pixel Watch can be connected to a Google Account at a time. The documented exception is the Fitbit Air and Pixel Watch pairing. If your account already has another Fitbit or Pixel Watch connected, remove that connection before adding the new device.

Remove the old pairing and set up again
If the connection still fails, follow the steps in the next section and then set up again from the app.
Reinstall the app
Reinstalling is a later option. Before you do it, confirm that your phone’s operating system is still supported. Reinstalling on an unsupported system will not solve the problem.

Contact support
If setup still fails after these steps, contact Google or Fitbit support. Have the Fitbit model, your phone model and operating system version, and the exact error message ready.

When to remove an old pairing
Remove the old connection only when setup has failed after the basic checks, or when the Fitbit is still linked to another phone or account. Removing a pairing takes it off both the app and the phone’s Bluetooth list, so you will need to set the device up again afterward.

- In Google Health, remove the Fitbit from your account or device list.
- On the phone, open the Bluetooth settings and remove the Fitbit entry:
- iPhone: tap the information button next to the Fitbit and choose Forget This Device.
- Android: open the Fitbit entry in the Bluetooth list and choose Unpair or Forget. The label depends on your phone maker.
- Reopen Google Health and set up the Fitbit again, starting from the app.
Avoid a factory reset unless support recommends it
A factory reset is not a normal pairing step. Google describes device recovery and factory reset as a last resort for unresponsive devices, boot loops, or update failures that persist. A reset erases unsynced activity statistics, alarms, goals, and notification settings. Before you consider one:
- Sync the Fitbit so that recent activity reaches your account.
- Check the reset instructions for your exact model.
- If the problem is an update failure, use Google’s Troubleshoot updating your Fitbit device guidance first.
Google’s help pages used for this guide do not display publication dates, so treat the requirements and menu labels as current as of early October 2026 and check them again if your app looks different.
