KAIST researchers have built a soft, airless rover wheel that folds into a compact form and opens for driving. The team proposes that a small rover fitted with such a wheel could descend into a lunar pit or lava tube without a crane or tether. The work is a laboratory prototype. Its reported tests were run on the ground and in simulation, and the published account does not show the wheel operating on the Moon.
What the wheel is
The wheel comes from KAIST, the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology. Its KAIST College of Engineering report, dated February 19, 2026, describes a wheel built from elastic metal strips arranged in a spiral reciprocal structure. The design draws on origami folding and on Leonardo da Vinci’s bridge principle, in which interlocking members support one another without a central hub. Despite the name, the wheel is not made of paper. The origami reference describes how the structure folds and unfolds.
Because the strips are elastic and the wheel has no pneumatic tire, it can coil into a small package for transport and then expand into a working wheel. That deployable behavior is the core idea. The wheel is meant to deform when it meets an obstacle or a hard landing, rather than transmitting the full shock to the rover body.

Why lava tubes are hard to enter
Lunar pits and lava tubes are attractive targets for science. They may preserve geological evidence that is hard to reach on the surface. Their interiors may also offer shelter from temperature extremes, cosmic radiation and micrometeorite impacts. These benefits are expected rather than measured, because no rover has yet surveyed a lunar lava tube from the inside.

Getting in is the difficult part. A rover may have to handle steep or near-vertical descents, loose lunar soil and irregular rocks at the entrance. Wheels that work well on flat, firm ground can slip, sink or be damaged in these conditions.
The tether problem
KAIST notes that earlier concepts often lowered small rovers on a tether from a larger platform. That approach adds deployment steps and creates collision risk, since the lowered rover can swing into walls or land on debris. The KAIST wheel is intended to absorb impact so that a compact rover could make the descent on its own wheels, without the tether.

| Factor | Tethered lowering from a larger platform | Deformable wheel descent, as proposed by KAIST |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware needed at the entrance | Larger platform plus tether and lowering mechanism | Compact rover only, according to the concept |
| Deployment steps | More steps, including lowering and release | Fewer, because the rover drives or rolls in |
| Collision risk during descent | Swinging or contact with walls is a stated concern | Wheel is designed to deform and absorb impact |
| Demonstrated on the Moon | Not applicable to this comparison | No; ground and simulation tests only |
The table reflects the design intent described in the KAIST report. It is not a head-to-head test, and no measurement in the reviewed material compares the two approaches directly.

| Measure | Reported value | Reported by | Test conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Folded diameter | 230 mm | KAIST team, 2026 | Stowed configuration |
| Deployed diameter | 500 mm | KAIST team, 2026 | Expanded configuration |
| Obstacle traversal | Obstacles up to 200 mm | KAIST team, 2026 | Test setup details not stated in the KAIST report |

| Impact resilience | Resilience to impacts simulating a 100-meter descent under lunar gravity | Paper abstract indexed on PubMed, 2025 | Simulated impacts; the KAIST report gives no drop height |
The 230 mm to 500 mm change in diameter is the figure that explains the packaging advantage. A wheel that is more than twice its stowed size once deployed can be carried in a much smaller volume than a fixed wheel of the same working diameter, though the report does not quantify the stowed volume.
What the impact figure does and does not show
The 100-meter figure appears in the abstract of a paper titled “Soft deployable airless wheel for lunar lava tube intact exploration,” indexed on PubMed. The KAIST report describes impact testing but does not give this height. The PubMed page could not be opened for verification, so the figure should be read as the abstract’s reported simulation result.

A simulated drop under lunar gravity is a laboratory test of resilience. It is not evidence that the wheel has survived an actual lunar fall, and it does not show how the wheel behaves on lunar regolith at the bottom of a pit.

Development status and next steps
According to the KAIST report, the work involved the Unmanned Exploration Laboratory, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI). The report says the next step is to integrate the wheel into flight-grade micro-rovers. It also mentions Korea’s planned lunar missions for 2032 as background. The report does not link that date to a deployment of this wheel, so no flight date for the wheel should be inferred.

In practical terms, the wheel is at the stage where its mechanical behavior has been tested, and the open questions are whether it can be built to flight standards, controlled reliably and combined with a rover that can navigate inside a tube.
Other wheel projects that are easy to confuse
Several lunar wheel efforts were announced around the same time, and they differ in purpose and maturity.
NASA’s Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge
A NASA Johnson Space Center article dated August 17, 2026, describes the Rock and Roll with NASA Challenge, which tested wheel concepts for Moon base mobility. The prototype wheels were tested on a 45-kilogram ground rover at Johnson Space Center. NASA says later tests could examine lunar-like dust, vacuum and extreme temperatures. This challenge did not test the KAIST wheel. It is useful context because it shows that speed, load capacity, durability and terrain performance can pull wheel designs in different directions.

A NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory project page titled “JPL Robotics: Lunar Wheel” describes a non-pneumatic wheel for the ATHLETE rover, with NASA Glenn and Michelin involved in planned evaluation. The page does not show a date in the retrieved version. This is a separate project from the KAIST origami-inspired wheel, and the two should not be treated as the same technology.
How to read claims about lunar wheels
- Check whether a figure comes from a physical prototype, a simulation or a flight test. Most figures for this wheel are from prototype or simulated conditions.
- Check the soil and gravity. Slope results in simulated lunar soil do not automatically transfer to real regolith, and a lunar-gravity drop is not the same as a drop on Earth.
- Check whether a comparison is head to head. Claims that one wheel is better than another need data from the same test on both designs.
- Check the year and the source. The KAIST report is dated February 19, 2026. The PubMed abstract is listed with a 2025 record.
On the evidence available, the KAIST wheel is a promising mechanical concept for descending into lunar pits, with reported ground and simulation results. Whether it can carry out that job on the Moon has not yet been shown.
