For a self-managed Magento or Adobe Commerce store, start with NGINX and PHP-FPM. It is the only one of the four options with explicit Adobe support in Adobe’s production software guidance, and Magento publishes an NGINX configuration sample you can adapt. Choose OpenResty only when you need Lua-based logic at the edge and have people who can maintain that layer. Caddy and Traefik are capable reverse proxies, but the official documentation covered here does not show Adobe support or a Magento configuration for either, so treat them as candidates that need full testing rather than defaults. No speed ranking is possible, because no comparable Magento benchmarks exist in the sources. Finally, the web server choice is separate from full-page caching: Adobe recommends Varnish for on-premises production and uses Fastly on Commerce Cloud.
What Adobe requires for production
Adobe’s software recommendations for production Commerce instances, published on the Adobe Experience League site, list the stack a store must run. The requirements are:
- PHP, with Nginx and PHP-FPM as the web and PHP handling layer
- MySQL
- Elasticsearch or OpenSearch
The same guidance states that Commerce fully supports NGINX and Apache, and it provides a recommended NGINX configuration sample. That makes NGINX the only one of the four options with first-party Adobe documentation behind it. Apache is also supported, but it is outside the scope of this comparison.
The four options at a glance
The table below compares only what the official documentation establishes. Where a source is silent, the cell says so rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream

| OpenResty | Not stated in the Adobe material reviewed | Not stated; no Magento-specific OpenResty configuration was found | Bundles LuaJIT and Lua libraries on an NGINX-based core for programmable gateway logic | Own and maintain the Lua and module layer |
| Caddy | Not stated in the Adobe material reviewed | Not stated; Caddy documents its own reverse proxy model | Documented upstream, forwarded-header and HTTPS transport behavior; automatic Host handling for HTTPS upstreams from v2.11.0 | Validate Magento routing and trusted proxy settings yourself |
| Traefik | Not stated in the Adobe material reviewed | Not stated; Traefik documents its own routing and certificate model | Certificate resolvers and certificate selection in routing configuration | Validate Magento rewrites, static files, PHP-FPM upstreams and cache behavior yourself |
Four options in detail
NGINX: the evidence-backed default
NGINX is the right starting point for a conventional self-managed Commerce deployment because it sits inside Adobe’s documented production stack. Adobe’s current software guidance requires NGINX with PHP-FPM for production and states full NGINX support. Magento’s NGINX sample shows the request patterns a store has to account for:
- Application routing, including the front-controller rewrite that sends unmatched requests to Magento’s entry point
- FastCGI handoff to PHP-FPM
- Static and media file handling
- Cache headers
- Compression
The sample is a configuration reference, not a performance comparison. It came from the 2.4-develop branch, so compare it with the file shipped for your own Magento or Adobe Commerce version before copying any directive.
OpenResty: when programmable edge logic is the requirement
OpenResty describes itself as an NGINX-based web platform that bundles LuaJIT and a substantial set of Lua libraries and modules for building programmable web applications and gateways. Its official site states that OpenResty is not an NGINX fork.

- 【Five Gigabit Ports】1 Gigabit WAN Port plus 2 Gigabit WAN/LAN Ports plus 2 Gigabit LAN Port. Up to 3 WAN ports optimize bandwidth usage through one device.
- 【One USB WAN Port】Mobile broadband via 4G/3G modem is supported for WAN backup by connecting to the USB port. For complete list of compatible 4G/3G modems, please visit TP-Link website.
- 【Abundant Security Features】Advanced firewall policies, DoS defense, IP/MAC/URL filtering, speed test and more security functions protect your network and data.
- 【Highly Secure VPN】Supports up to 20× LAN-to-LAN IPsec, 16× OpenVPN, 16× L2TP, and 16× PPTP VPN connections.
- Security - SPI Firewall, VPN Pass through, FTP/H.323/PPTP/SIP/IPsec ALG, DoS Defence, Ping of Death and Local Management. Standards and Protocols IEEE 802.3, 802.3u, 802.3ab, IEEE 802.3x, IEEE 802.1q
Choose it when a defined requirement needs logic that runs inside the request path at the edge, such as custom request inspection or gateway behavior your team has already designed and tested. Without that requirement, OpenResty adds a platform layer without a demonstrated Magento benefit. Do not describe it as a drop-in Adobe-supported Magento server, and do not expect a speed gain without compatibility testing and benchmark evidence specific to your store. OpenResty also warns that third-party NGINX C modules it does not maintain are unsupported and may compromise stability, so audit every module you add.
Teams that need vendor support for OpenResty itself can look at the commercial technical support and OpenResty XRay offerings that OpenResty lists on its site. Those services cover OpenResty, not Magento compatibility.
Caddy: capable proxy, no Magento-specific evidence
Caddy’s official reverse proxy documentation covers upstream selection, forwarded headers, trusted proxies and HTTPS transport. Since v2.11.0, Caddy automatically sets the Host header to match an HTTPS upstream host unless you configure it otherwise. That matters for any Magento setup where the upstream is reached over HTTPS and host-based routing or base URL behavior depends on the header.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
If Caddy sits behind a CDN or another proxy, review its trusted proxy configuration. Without it, the server may trust forwarded client or protocol headers that a client can spoof. These are proxy-level facts. The cited Caddy documentation does not establish Adobe support for Magento, and no Magento-specific Caddy configuration was found.

Traefik: TLS-centric routing, validate before use
Traefik’s TLS documentation describes supplying certificates in routing configuration or obtaining them through certificate resolvers, along with how certificates are selected. Those features suit a deployment that already manages certificates and routing through Traefik.
The official material reviewed does not establish an Adobe-backed Magento deployment recipe. Treat Traefik as a candidate when its routing and TLS workflow already matches your environment. Then validate the same Magento-specific behaviour listed in the testing checklist below: front-controller rewrites, static files, PHP-FPM upstream handling, forwarded headers and cache behaviour.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Choosing among them
Work through these questions in order. The first answer that applies usually settles the choice.
- Are you on Adobe Commerce Cloud? Cloud routes are configured through Adobe’s route configuration, which controls upstreams, redirects, TLS and route caching. The choice of a self-managed web server or proxy applies mainly to self-managed stores.
- Do you need an explicitly supported production stack? Choose NGINX with PHP-FPM, following Magento’s sample configuration for your release.
- Is Lua at the edge a requirement you can state precisely? If yes, OpenResty is the relevant option, and your team must own the Lua and module layer.
- Is a Caddy or Traefik proxy already in front of your stack, with a working TLS workflow? If so, you can keep it, but only after testing the Magento-specific behaviour described below. Adobe support is not established for either option.
- Does your team have the skills to run it? Consider familiarity with the server, module or plugin lifecycle, configuration review, observability, incident response and upgrade testing. These are decision criteria, not claims that one product is easier or faster to run.
Full-page caching is a separate decision
Adobe’s caching guidance says on-premises Commerce production uses Varnish for full-page caching, and Commerce Cloud uses Fastly for edge and full-page caching. Choosing an NGINX, OpenResty, Caddy or Traefik front end does not configure either cache layer, and changing the application cache backend does not configure Varnish or Fastly either.
On Commerce Cloud, Force TLS through Fastly is configurable in Staging and Production, and HTTPS route templates can be used. An edge proxy in front of Varnish or Fastly does not replace them. If you run a proxy in front of a self-managed Varnish layer, make sure cache headers from the Magento sample reach Varnish unchanged and that customer- or session-aware responses are not cached where they should not be.
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Testing before production
Whichever option you choose, run the same checks against the exact topology you will ship. Include these:
- Front-controller rewrites and
try_files-equivalent behaviour for unmatched storefront and admin routes - Static and media asset delivery, including correct content types and compression
- Security-denied paths returning the expected responses, not application content
- Cache headers, with no caching of customer- or session-specific responses
- Health checks against the upstream PHP-FPM pool
- Redirects, including HTTP to HTTPS and any store or locale redirects
- Forwarded host, protocol and client IP headers, and where TLS terminates
- Behaviour during an upgrade or configuration reload
What the evidence does and does not show
No controlled comparison of these four options on Magento was found, and no compatibility matrix covers all four. The sources contain no Magento speed measurements, connection counts or benchmark ratios, so this article does not rank the options by performance. OpenResty’s broad scale claims are not Magento benchmarks and should not be used to rank it. The official documentation reflects its publication dates, so check current Adobe and vendor pages before you deploy.
In short: NGINX has the documented Adobe path, OpenResty suits teams that need Lua at the edge, and Caddy and Traefik need proof for your own Magento setup before you rely on them.
