A smart home can expose information through weak router or device security, cloud accounts, camera remote access, or privacy settings that allow collection you did not intend. Those are possible risks—not proof that someone has accessed your devices. Start with the router, then protect accounts, update devices, review what they collect, and limit who and what can connect.
1. Secure your router first
Your connected devices commonly use the router to reach the internet, so router settings are a high-value starting point. The Federal Trade Commission calls it “The key to privacy in the Internet-of-Things (IoT) world.” Its home Wi-Fi security guidance recommends basic protections that reduce avoidable exposure.
- Change the router administrator password and Wi-Fi password to unique passwords you do not use elsewhere.
- Install available router software updates.
- Use WPA3 Personal if supported, or WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as newer and best of the two, while WPA2 also encrypts traffic. WPA and WEP are outdated and insecure.
- Confirm the router firewall is enabled.
- Turn off remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) if you do not need them.
If your router cannot provide WPA2 or WPA3 even after its software is updated, replacing it is worth considering. A new router alone does not secure device accounts, fix privacy settings, or ensure every device receives updates.

2. Lock down device and cloud accounts
Change factory-set credentials on devices and their associated accounts. Use a different, strong password for each account, including the cloud account used to manage a camera or speaker. Turn on two-factor authentication wherever the device or service offers it. These steps help protect access even when a password is exposed or guessed.

Check who has permission to manage each device. Remove former household members, old phones, or other accounts that no longer need access, especially for cameras and other devices with remote viewing.
3. Update devices and remove what you no longer use
Outdated device software can leave avoidable weaknesses. The FTC’s advice on securing internet-connected devices recommends keeping software current and warns that older devices can become weak points.

- Open your router’s connected-device list and identify the devices using your network.
- For each device you keep, check its app and manufacturer instructions for firmware and app updates. Enable automatic updates when available.
- Disconnect devices you no longer use, and disable features such as remote management when you do not need them.
- Check whether a device still receives updates; support status and update menus differ by manufacturer and can change.
Inventory matters: an old device that is still connected can be easy to overlook when reviewing your household’s security.
4. Review what your devices collect and share
Security settings control who can reach a device; privacy settings control what information it collects and where that information goes. Review both rather than assuming that a device is private because it is password-protected.

Smart TVs
Check the TV’s privacy and tracking settings, and remove apps you do not use. Menu names vary by model, so consult the manufacturer’s current instructions. If you are asking, “Is my smart TV tracking me?”, the useful first step is to inspect those settings rather than assume a particular TV is collecting a specific kind of data.
Voice assistants
Review the manufacturer’s current controls for recordings, history, and retention. The FTC notes that voice assistants may listen and send recordings to manufacturers. Look for options to review or delete saved history and adjust retention or recording controls; their names and availability differ across services.

Security cameras
Check whether the camera encrypts data, who can view or administer its stream, whether remote viewing is enabled, and whether access logs are available. If you wonder, “Can someone hack my home security camera?”, these checks can help you reduce exposure, but they cannot establish whether a specific camera has been compromised.
5. Separate access where practical
Set up a guest network so visitors can get online without receiving your main Wi-Fi password. If your router and camera support it, consider placing cameras on a separate network from computers and printers. Separating devices can limit some paths between them, but it is not a guarantee of privacy or security. Follow the instructions for your router and camera when setting up networks.

How to judge a router or connected device
When replacing or adding equipment, use these questions to compare its security and privacy capabilities rather than relying on a product label or a single feature:
- Does the router support WPA3 or WPA2, and does the device receive software updates?
- Can you set unique account credentials and enable two-factor authentication?
- For cameras, what encryption and remote-viewing controls are available?
- Can you review sharing permissions and access logs?
- Does the router support a guest network or separate networks for devices?
NIST’s September 2024 publication, NIST IR 8425A, sets out cybersecurity outcomes and requirements for consumer-grade router products. It is guidance for product security, not a review or ranking of individual routers.
