Samsung is reportedly planning to reduce smartphone production by as much as 30% as memory and other component costs squeeze margins. That figure comes from MoneyToday’s October 8, 2026 report—not an official Samsung announcement in the company materials reviewed. Samsung has confirmed the underlying cost pressure, but not the reported production cut.
What Samsung has confirmed—and what remains a report
MoneyToday says Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division is adjusting smartphone output, with a reduction of up to 30% attributed to rising memory prices and margin pressure. The outlet also reports that Samsung gave suppliers specific production instructions. Neither the cut nor those instructions are confirmed in Samsung’s public results cited here. MoneyToday’s English page says it was translated using AI and may differ slightly from the original, so its details should be read with that qualification. MoneyToday’s report
Samsung’s July 30, 2026 results do confirm strain: the combined MX and Networks businesses recorded an operating loss of KRW 0.7 trillion in Q2. Samsung said MX earnings declined amid “elevated component cost pressures across the industry.” The figure covers MX and Networks together; it is not a handset-only or MX-only result. Samsung also expected rising component costs and soft consumer demand to continue in the second half of 2026. Samsung’s Q2 2026 results
Why component costs are squeezing phone economics
Mobile memory prices rose sharply
Samsung’s 1Q26 interim report says the price of memory for mobile increased approximately 107% compared with the previous year’s annual average. That is a component-price comparison, not a 107% increase in the retail price of a Galaxy phone and not a measure of all parts. In the same comparison, Samsung reported mobile application processor prices up approximately 12% and camera-module prices up approximately 15%. Samsung’s 1Q26 interim report

Rising parts costs leave a handset maker with a difficult choice: absorb more of the increase and accept thinner margins, or raise prices and risk discouraging buyers. MoneyToday frames the reported output adjustment as an effort to limit losses amid those pressures; Samsung has not publicly confirmed that explanation as the reason for a specific cut.
Reported demand and pricing constraints
MoneyToday also points to Q4 seasonality, consumers waiting for next year’s launches, longer phone-replacement cycles, and limited scope to pass higher costs through to buyers. These are explanations in the outlet’s reporting, not factors Samsung identified as causes of the reported production change in its Q2 results.

What the output and price figures do—and do not—show
| Figure | What it refers to | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 30% reduction | MoneyToday’s report about Samsung smartphone production | Reported, not confirmed by Samsung in the cited company materials. MoneyToday |
| KRW 0.7 trillion operating loss | Combined MX and Networks businesses in Q2 2026 | Samsung-reported segment result; not a handset-only loss. Samsung |
| Approximately 107% increase | Mobile memory price versus the previous year’s annual average, in Samsung’s 1Q26 interim report | A component-price comparison, not a phone retail-price increase. Samsung |
| 56.754 million; 214.259 million | Samsung smartphone production in 1Q26 and 2025, respectively | Historical company-wide output figures, not a Q4 2026 forecast. Samsung |
| 11.6% increase beginning in October | MoneyToday’s reported rise in Galaxy S26 ex-factory pricing | Ex-factory pricing is not the same as the consumer retail price in every market. MoneyToday |
The output figures in Samsung’s interim report document past production; they do not verify the reported future reduction. Samsung’s Q2 release cites S26 series sales and says the series will remain part of its H2 flagship focus, but that product context does not establish a production-cut percentage.

MoneyToday’s reported 11.6% ex-factory price increase likewise does not establish how much consumers will pay. Retail prices can differ by market and channel, and the report does not make the figure a universal retail increase. Nor does a reported production cut, on its own, prove that Galaxy phones will become more expensive or harder to find.

What to watch next
The key distinction is between a confirmed cost problem and an unconfirmed production decision. Samsung has disclosed component-cost pressure, a combined MX and Networks loss, and an expectation that costs and soft demand would persist in H2 2026. The up-to-30% output reduction, supplier instructions, and forward-looking loss estimates remain claims reported by MoneyToday rather than confirmed company guidance in the cited Samsung materials. Samsung’s FY2026 half-year report was listed on its investor-relations site on September 1, 2026; that listing alone does not establish the later reported Q4 adjustment. Samsung investor-relations listing
A separate SamMobile report cites an estimated 2026 output of 200 million phones, down from an earlier 270 million estimate, and a 175% year-over-year RAM price rise. Samsung’s cited disclosures do not establish those output estimates as company guidance. The 175% figure also differs in scope and comparison from Samsung’s approximately 107% mobile-memory increase versus the prior-year annual average, so the two should not be treated as equivalent. MoneyToday quotes Meritz Securities researcher Kim Sun-woo as saying that component costs such as memory are taking a larger share of finished-product costs and that minimizing losses is difficult when higher prices can reduce sales volumes. Those comments are MoneyToday’s English translation, which the outlet says may differ slightly from the original.
