No Man’s Sky is worth buying if you want a self-directed space exploration game with a large, frequently updated feature set and you are comfortable setting your own goals. It is a weaker fit if you want a tightly paced, authored campaign. Whether its multiplayer features suit your group depends on your platform and the current version, so check both before you pay.
What the game is now
Hello Games describes No Man’s Sky as an exploration and survival game set in a procedurally generated galaxy. That short description undersells how much the game has grown since its launch. The developer’s release log for 2026 lists several large additions: The Swarm, which adds combat against a new threat and cooperative work to develop technology; Xeno Arena, a turn-based creature battle mode; and Voyagers, which adds customizable, walkable multi-crew Corvette-class ships and multiplayer missions. Because the release log is maintained by the developer, it is the best record of what has been added, but it is not an independent assessment of how well those additions work.
The game’s tenth anniversary has also brought fresh attention. Xbox Wire’s anniversary article, published August 10, 2026, says the game received “almost 40 major free updates” in its first ten years. That is Xbox Wire’s own figure, not an audited count. A PlayStation Blog post dated September 9, 2026 announced the Cosmos update as live on PS5 and described an anniversary expedition whose milestones revisit features from earlier updates. An expedition can therefore serve as a guided route through older systems, but the sources do not establish that every expedition stays available permanently.
Reasons it may be a good fit
- Freedom to choose your own goals. Exploration is the core of the game, and the updates have added distinct activities on top of it. Players can pick among exploration, building, collecting, expeditions, combat, and ship customization, or ignore most of them.
- Sustained support. The release log records updates and platform patches through 2026, and the anniversary coverage points to a long run of free updates. For a game that has been out for a decade, that continuity is a real point in its favour.
- Optional social play. Official materials describe cross-play and multiplayer features, and the Voyagers entries add multi-crew ships and multiplayer missions. Friends who want to explore or build together can use these, subject to platform-specific availability.
Reasons it may be a poor fit
- Open-ended can feel unfocused. If you want a story or mission chain that tells you where to go next, a sandbox with no fixed route may feel aimless. This is a judgment about the game’s structure, not a measured player complaint.
- Breadth does not mean every activity is equally deep. The update notes show that many activities exist. They do not show that each one has the depth or polish that every player expects, so judge the activities you actually care about rather than the list as a whole.
- Feature availability varies by platform. The release log lists platform availability on individual entries. A feature described in one update note may not be on every platform at the same time, so do not assume parity.
- Repetition and performance are hard to pin down. Independent, current figures on player satisfaction, average playtime, bug frequency, or performance on each platform are not available from the sources this guide relies on. If those factors matter to you, treat them as open questions to check yourself rather than settled facts.
Multiplayer and cross-play: what to check
Cross-play and multiplayer are among the most version-sensitive parts of the game, so check them before you rely on them. Hello Games’ “Beyond Update” page, published in 2019, describes multiplayer, VR, accessibility controls, and player caps at that time. Those player caps are historical and should not be treated as the current limit. For current multiplayer behaviour, rely on the 2026 entries in the release log and the store listing for your platform.

- Open the most recent entries in the developer’s release log and find the update that introduced the multiplayer feature you want.
- Check whether that entry lists your platform. If it does not, the feature may not be available to you yet.
- Confirm the store listing for your platform matches the version you plan to buy.
- Ask your friends which platform they play on, since cross-play support depends on both sides being on a compatible version.

Before you buy
- Confirm the current version and the platform listing for the edition you are considering.
- Read the latest release log entries that mention your platform, not only the headline updates.
- If multiplayer is your main reason for buying, verify that the feature you need is listed for your platform.
- Do not rely on launch-era descriptions of the game, which do not reflect the current feature set.
This guide is based on the developer’s release log, official descriptions, and anniversary coverage from Xbox Wire and PlayStation Blog. It does not reflect hands-on play, so the performance and feel of the game on your own hardware are for you to judge.
