Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf your keyboard suddenly types different letters or symbols, switch back to the intended language or layout first. The steps depend on your device: use the taskbar layout menu on Windows, the keyboard selector on iPhone or Android, or the input settings on Chromebook. If the selected layout is already correct, check for a remapped key or a keyboard-app problem instead.
First, identify what changed
“Normal” can mean the keyboard’s language or layout, the on-screen keyboard app, or the action assigned to a physical key. Match the fix to the symptom:
- Different letters or symbols appear: switch to the intended language or layout.
- A different on-screen keyboard appears: select your usual keyboard with the device’s keyboard selector.
- One physical key performs another action: check key-remapping settings, where available.
- The layout looks right, but typing is delayed or inaccurate: troubleshoot the keyboard app.
If the problem happens only in one app, check that app’s input behavior before changing device-wide settings.
Switch the keyboard layout in Windows 10 or 11
Choose an installed layout
- Select the input-language indicator in the taskbar, then choose the keyboard layout you want.
- Alternatively, hold the Windows logo key and press Spacebar to cycle through installed layouts. If nothing changes, Windows may have only one layout installed.
Add or remove a layout
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the options for the relevant language and add the intended layout under Keyboards. You do not always need to install a full language pack to add a keyboard layout.
- To remove an unwanted layout, use the same Keyboards section. Check the entries for relevant languages; a layout can be associated with a language other than the Windows display language.
Changing the keyboard layout changes how keystrokes are interpreted; it does not change the Windows display language. See Microsoft’s Windows keyboard and input-layout instructions. Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows 10 and 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; the operating system can still work, but Microsoft no longer provides its free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.

Start with the device’s keyboard selector or input settings to select the intended installed keyboard. Microsoft SwiftKey provides instructions for switching to its keyboard on Android and iPhone. On iPhone, some apps require the default keyboard, so a third-party keyboard may not appear in every app. If the keyboard is selected and the issue persists, then troubleshoot the app rather than assuming it needs to be reinstalled.
