Hitachi Energy announced more than $1 billion in U.S. manufacturing investment on September 4, 2025, including a planned large power transformer plant in South Boston, Virginia. That is no longer the company’s latest stated total: after announcing a separate Mississippi factory on September 15, 2026, Hitachi Energy said its U.S. manufacturing expansion commitment had reached around $1.5 billion.
What is Hitachi investing in?
The investment is for U.S. manufacturing capacity for grid equipment, especially large power transformers. Hitachi Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd., said its September 4, 2025 program included about $457 million for a new South Boston, Virginia, facility, alongside expansions at existing facilities. The company said the program was intended to meet rising demand from AI data centers, U.S. manufacturing and other sectors, while supporting grid expansion and modernization. Large power transformers are used in high-voltage transmission and power generation, as well as in infrastructure serving data centers and large industrial sites. The investment is therefore aimed at equipment used to move and connect electricity—not at building data centers or generating power itself.

Where are the new transformer factories?

Is Hitachi’s U.S. investment still $1 billion?
No. More than $1 billion was the figure in Hitachi Energy’s September 2025 announcement. On September 15, 2026, the company said its U.S. manufacturing expansion commitment had reached around $1.5 billion after it announced the $528 million Mississippi factory.
These are company-announced investment figures, not independently audited spending or completed construction outcomes. The $1.5 billion is the company’s stated overall commitment; it should not be treated as a sum that can be independently reconstructed by adding the project costs listed above. The announcements do not establish how every project figure relates to the broader total.

How much electricity do AI data centers use?
The announcements identify AI data centers as one source of rising electricity demand, alongside manufacturing and other sectors. They do not quantify AI’s share of U.S. electricity use, so the investment figures cannot be used to calculate how much power AI consumes or how much demand these factories will serve.

What the investment could mean for the grid
More domestic transformer production can add manufacturing capacity for equipment used in grid expansion and modernization. The announcements establish Hitachi Energy’s investment plans, project locations, and selected expectations; they do not establish how quickly new equipment will reach grid projects or quantify the effect on U.S. electricity reliability, prices, or AI-related demand.
