If Windows 10 says it can’t connect to Microsoft Family and your family on the device might not be up to date, first check your Microsoft account information in Settings, then try the family-device verification page. These are community-reported checks, not guaranteed fixes. The warning can reflect an account or synchronization problem; it does not identify one definite cause.
What the warning means
The message may appear when you try to add another user to a Windows 10 PC. Microsoft’s documentation describes Authentication as a connected experience that validates a Microsoft identity, and Family Safety as a connected experience for family groups, activity summaries, screen-time limits, and content filters. That makes account status and Family Safety synchronization relevant checks, but Microsoft’s documentation does not diagnose this exact warning or prescribe a guaranteed repair. Microsoft’s connected experiences documentation explains these services.
A family group visible on the web does not necessarily mean the same membership has synchronized to Windows. A Windows 10 user reported seeing changes in the browser that did not appear on PCs. Treat the web view and the PC’s Family Safety view as separate checks.
Check for a Microsoft account update in Windows
- Open Settings > Accounts > Your Info.
- Look for a prompt to update or verify your Microsoft account information. If Windows presents one, complete it.
- Return to the Family settings and check whether the membership or warning has changed.
A Microsoft Q&A respondent reported that completing an account information update resolved the issue on multiple computers. This is an individual report, not an officially confirmed or universal fix. See the account-update report on Microsoft Q&A.

Try the family-device verification page
If Windows does not show an account update prompt, or the warning remains, visit aka.ms/familyverify and follow any verification steps shown for your account. A separate Microsoft Q&A respondent reported that using this page resolved the problem. This is also a community-reported check, not a guaranteed Microsoft fix. The available reports do not establish that it is more effective than checking the account information in Windows. Read the verification-page report on Microsoft Q&A.
Compare the family group on the web and on the PC
- If the web family group is wrong or incomplete: the issue is not limited to what Windows displays. Confirm the membership shown for your account before relying on it.
- If the web family group is correct but Windows is stale or missing a member: the PC may not have synchronized the current family state. Check whether the child or other member and the PC appear correctly in the Family Safety interface.
One Windows 10 report describes family changes appearing in a browser but not on PCs. It supports checking both views, but does not establish a universal cause or a specific synchronization repair. See the Windows 10 synchronization report on Microsoft Q&A.

Confirm Family Safety status before relying on protections
Before relying on screen-time limits or content filters, verify that the relevant family member and device appear correctly in Family Safety. The warning alone does not prove that protections are disabled. However, reported synchronization problems can leave Windows showing outdated family membership, so check the actual member and device status rather than assuming that the warning has no effect.

The available reports do not establish one official cause or a guaranteed solution for this exact message. When contacting Microsoft Support for account-specific help, include the details that can distinguish an account issue from a device-sync issue:

- Whether the family group appears correctly in the browser.
- Whether the member and PC appear correctly in Family Safety.
Do not treat the warning by itself as proof that your internet connection, VPN, proxy, or a particular Windows update caused the problem. A report describes the message persisting despite working internet and no VPN or proxy. The evidence also does not establish removing and re-adding a child, resetting Windows, or disabling firewall protections as safe or reliable fixes.
