Your phone’s operating system and its apps update separately. A message saying the phone is up to date does not confirm that every app—or a feature inside an app—is current. Check the app’s listing in the App Store or Google Play, then verify that your phone and the app support the release or feature you need.
First, identify what the outdated message refers to
Work out whether the message is about the phone’s operating system, an installed app, a built-in app, or one feature within an app. These are separate checks: an operating-system update does not install every app release, and an app update does not guarantee that every feature is available on every device.
If you can, note the app name, phone model, operating-system version, app version, and the exact message or error. Those details help distinguish an update that has not been offered from one that is stuck or a feature that is unavailable on your device.
Check the app’s update status in its store
On iPhone
- Open the App Store.
- Tap your account or photo button.
- Review App Updates and tap Update beside the app if an update is offered.
Apple says downloaded apps update automatically by default, but you can check and update them manually from the App Store account area. See Apple’s instructions for updating apps from the App Store on iPhone.

On Android
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & devices.
- Under Updates available, check whether the app is listed and install its update if offered.
Google Play manages app releases separately from Android system updates. If the app is not listed for update, check its Play Store page and the app’s own requirements before concluding that the phone itself needs another update. Google’s guides cover downloading apps and troubleshooting an installed Android app.
Check the phone’s system update separately
On Android, open Settings and look for System update or Software update; the exact path and wording vary by phone maker and model. Google’s app troubleshooting steps also recommend checking for an Android system update. On iPhone or iPad, use Settings > General > Software Update to check iOS or iPadOS. A system update can matter for compatibility, but it does not substitute for checking the app’s own store listing.

Verify device, app, and feature compatibility
An update or feature may not be available for every device. Apple notes that a compatible device is required for an iPhone or iPad software update. On Android, Google Play’s app page indicates whether that app is available for the particular device. Check the app maker’s stated requirements for the specific feature as well: a current phone and a current app do not by themselves establish that the feature is supported for your model or release.

If an update is stuck or will not download
When several apps cannot update, troubleshoot delivery conditions before focusing on one app. Google recommends checking the internet connection, available storage, date and time, and whether the device needs a system update; restarting can also help. Google Play identifies less than 1 GB of available space as a possible sign that storage is too low for downloads—not a guarantee that storage is the cause.
- Confirm the phone has a working internet connection.
- Check free storage and make room if space is low.
- Restart the phone and try the update again.
- On Android, check that date and time are set automatically.
- Check for a system update as well as app updates.
For an iPhone or iPad system update that fails, Apple lists device compatibility, internet access, available storage, and access to update servers among the requirements or possible obstacles. Its troubleshooting steps include retrying, deleting and downloading the update again, and using a Mac or iTunes in some cases. Use the scope of the problem to choose the next step
Only one app or feature is affected
Check that app’s store listing and compatibility requirements. If the app remains broken after its update and basic troubleshooting, contact its developer; Google recommends developer support when problems continue with an installed app.

Look first for a shared cause such as a weak connection, low storage, incorrect Android date and time, or a store/download issue. If multiple downloads remain stalled, consult the platform’s support steps rather than repeatedly checking only the phone’s operating-system version.

The app is current, but the feature is still missing
Check the app maker’s description or support information for the feature’s requirements and availability. Developers can prompt users to install a newer compatible release, but that does not mean every device receives the same feature at the same time. Google Play Console documents this developer-controlled update prompting in its guide to prompting users to update to a newer app version.
