Compare T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon by checking service where you actually use your phone, then pricing the same number of lines and comparing data, hotspot, travel, and included extras. Coverage maps and “unlimited” labels are only starting points: the full plan terms and bill determine whether an option fits your household.
1. Check coverage where you use your phone
Start with your home, workplace, regular routes, and frequent destinations—not a carrier’s nationwide headline. Enter each location in the carriers’ coverage maps and compare the same places. Verizon and AT&T both describe their maps as approximate rather than guarantees of service. A map can help rule out a poor fit, but it cannot establish reception inside a particular building.
AT&T says its 5G network covered over 316 million people nationwide; the carrier’s page identifies the coverage as of March 2025 and says map information is approximate. That population figure is not a prediction of service at your address, and it is not a direct comparison of the three carriers’ coverage.
If a location is especially important, ask people who use each network there or test service before relying on a map alone. Coverage can vary with the building, device, and precise location.

2. Compare the full monthly bill for the same number of lines
Choose the line count your household needs, then ask each carrier for the recurring total for that exact account. Include taxes and fees, AutoPay and paperless-billing requirements, discounts, device payments, and any credits that affect the advertised price. A per-line headline is not the same as the final bill.
For example, AT&T advertises Value 2.0 starting at $30 per line. That offer requires eligible AutoPay and paperless billing and a new bring-your-own-device phone on each line for a bill credit lasting up to 36 months; taxes and fees are extra. Confirm the conditions and total bill for your account before treating that headline as your price. Verizon’s plan comparison also notes that taxes and fees are not included on most plans.

Ask for the amount you will pay after any promotion ends, as well as the amount due each month while credits apply. If you are financing a phone, include its remaining balance or monthly payment in the switch calculation.
3. Compare data and hotspot terms, not just “unlimited”
Plans that use the word “unlimited” can differ in how much high-speed data they include, when traffic may be slowed or deprioritized, and how much data you can share through a hotspot. Check the plan’s current disclosure for the exact conditions and speeds, including what happens after an allowance is used.

These are the allowances described on AT&T’s plan page; check its current plan disclosure for slowdown conditions and hotspot speeds after the allowance. For T-Mobile, compare the specific Experience plan’s hotspot terms; T-Mobile describes premium data as unlimited on Experience plans. Verizon’s plan comparison lists different hotspot allowances by plan, so check the terms for the exact Verizon plan you are considering. Do not assume that similarly named or “unlimited” plans work the same way.
4. Count only perks your household would use
Compare the included benefit with the subscription or service you would otherwise pay for, and confirm that your selected plan qualifies. T-Mobile lists Netflix Standard with ads at no extra cost for qualifying Experience More and Experience Beyond plans, Apple TV benefits on qualifying Experience plans, and Hulu with ads on qualifying Experience Beyond plans. Eligibility and bundle details can change.

Verizon’s comparison describes optional streaming perks. AT&T’s cited plan information emphasizes other features. Treat these as plan-specific extras rather than reasons to choose a carrier on their own: a perk has little value if nobody in the household would use it.
5. Match international features to your actual travel
Compare the countries you visit, which lines need service, and the plan’s specific international data, calling, and roaming terms. The carriers’ plans differ in international allowances and account flexibility; AT&T also lists benefits by plan tier. Check the current terms for the destinations and lines you care about rather than assuming domestic data allowances, speeds, or “unlimited” service apply abroad.

6. Check your phone before switching
A new phone is not automatically necessary. Before buying one, check whether your current device is compatible with the carrier and its 5G service, and whether it is unlocked. AT&T requires a compatible 5G device for 5G service; T-Mobile also conditions 5G access on a compatible device and coverage. Confirm compatibility and unlock status before committing to a plan or financing a replacement.
7. Use a side-by-side checklist to choose
Once you have narrowed the options to plans that work at your important locations, compare them on the same account assumptions. Fill in the checklist from each carrier’s current plan disclosure and written quote:

| Device and financing | Compatibility, unlock status, any remaining device balance, and the cost of a replacement if one is actually needed. |
Plan details and promotions change frequently. Verify the current plan disclosure and the final account quote before switching; a carrier’s own materials are the best source for that carrier’s terms, not neutral evidence of comparative network performance.
