AOL turned 40 in 2025, tracing its roots to a small online service launched in Virginia in 1985. The anniversary passed without a prominent public campaign identified in the available coverage, but that does not establish that AOL held no private or limited celebrations. The milestone is also separate from a later change: AOL ended dial-up internet service on September 30, 2025, while continuing to offer email.

When was AOL founded?

The company that became AOL began as Quantum Computer Services. TIME dates its founding to May 24, 1985, and reports that it was renamed America Online in 1991. AOL’s current About page likewise places the launch in 1985, describing a small Virginia online service for Commodore 64 users.

That history makes 2025 the company’s 40th anniversary year. TIME marked the 30th anniversary in 2015, but the available sources do not establish an official anniversary date or schedule for 2025.

Why did AOL’s 40th anniversary seem quiet?

No prominent public campaign specifically marking the May 2025 anniversary surfaced in the coverage reviewed. That supports calling the milestone quiet in public view, not claiming that AOL deliberately chose not to celebrate or that no celebration took place. Private or limited activities may not have been publicly reported.

AOL’s About page offers a retrospective of the familiar online era rather than a specific account of a 40th-anniversary event. It recalls dial-up, chat rooms, instant messaging, email and trial CDs as parts of the company’s identity.

What made AOL recognizable?

Trial CDs and dial-up

AOL says it mailed one billion free-trial CDs. That is the company’s own retrospective figure, not an independently audited count. The discs helped make AOL’s dial-up service a familiar route onto the early internet for many households.

AOL’s About page also calls the modem sound “The dial-up screech.” Its recollections of trial discs, chat rooms and email describe how the company remembers its early service; they are not a complete account of the wider history of consumer internet access.

Email, chat rooms and instant messages

“You’ve Got Mail,” chat rooms and instant messaging became part of AOL’s public identity. AOL’s current About page presents those experiences as central to its story, including AIM buddy lists and the email service.

The same page says AOL has 30 million monthly users and that 3 million people check AOL email daily. These are current company claims on a page accessed in 2026, with no methodology stated in the retrieved text. The page also says “The inbox 8 million people open every morning,” a figure that appears inconsistent with the daily email count; the figures should not be treated as audited or combined.

What happened to AOL dial-up?

AOL’s dial-up service ended on September 30, 2025, after the anniversary year. The Associated Press reported the shutdown and said AOL email continued. The end of dial-up access was a service change, not the end of the AOL brand or its email offering.

Today’s services and AOL’s self-reported user figures provide context about the company, but they do not show how large or prominent its 2025 anniversary celebrations were.
