A Kindle Paperwhite can show home information in two ways: keep a simplified dashboard open in its browser while the device is awake, or display a pre-rendered image on its sleep screen. The first can offer touch controls; the second is better for a glanceable status panel that stays visible while the Kindle sleeps. The documented interactive project is a narrow, advanced setup—not a universal feature of Paperwhite models or firmware.

Choose how you want the dashboard to work

Approach What it shows Interaction and updates Main requirements and limits
Interactive browser dashboard A simplified web app that queries Home Assistant Touch controls while awake; the project guide says automatic refresh stops when the Kindle sleeps Requires a jailbroken Kindle and supporting software. The documented project was tested on Paperwhite 1 with firmware 5.3.x, not every current model or firmware. Project documentation
Rendered sleep-screen image A PNG snapshot of Home Assistant entity states Can remain visible while the Kindle sleeps; refresh timing depends on the image-fetching setup The E-Ink Dashboard integration supports Kindle presets and pull delivery. Replacing the lock screen requires a Kindle-side modification in the cited community setup. E-Ink Dashboard documentation Online screensaver project
Regular Home Assistant webpage The Home Assistant frontend or another web page Potentially interactive while open; Paperwhite compatibility with the current frontend is not established Home Assistant supports webpage dashboards but notes that browser security restrictions may prevent some sites from embedding. If you need controls, investigate the interactive route. If the goal is to see temperatures, lights, or other status at a glance without waking the Kindle, use a rendered image. If you want the least involved experiment, try a webpage first, but do not assume the current Home Assistant interface will work in an older Kindle browser.

Try a regular webpage dashboard first

Home Assistant lets you create a webpage dashboard that embeds a local-network or internet page. You can also create a separate dashboard without replacing the default Overview. This is a low-effort test, but it is not a confirmed compatibility method for a Paperwhite: the available documentation does not establish whether a current Paperwhite browser can render the modern Home Assistant frontend or complete its authentication flow reliably.

Home Assistant also warns that browser security restrictions can block embedded pages. If the page fails to load or authenticate, that does not prove that a simpler, purpose-built dashboard cannot work. See Home Assistant’s webpage dashboard guidance for the supported dashboard setup and embedding caveat.

Set up an interactive dashboard with kindle-dash

The kindle-dash project is a community-maintained web app designed for an older Kindle browser. It is not a standard Paperwhite setting. Its documented prerequisites are a jailbroken Kindle, KUAL, MRPI, SSH access over Wi-Fi or equivalent, a Home Assistant instance, and a computer on the same LAN that can run Docker.

Check the device before installing

The project reports testing on a Paperwhite 1 running firmware 5.3.x. That test does not establish support for current Paperwhite models or firmware. The project notes that other jailbroken models may require changes to the panel resolution and input-device path. Confirm your exact model and firmware against the project’s instructions before proceeding; do not assume that a jailbreak or installation method for one generation applies to another.

Run the app and connect it to Home Assistant

The project provides an installer and a manual Docker Compose configuration. It can use an existing Home Assistant installation: the documentation describes removing the bundled Home Assistant service and configuring the instance URL. The interface is an ES5-era single-page app styled for an older WebKit browser, and it routes API requests through nginx.

In the documented architecture, nginx adds the Home Assistant token on the server side rather than storing it in the Kindle browser app. The project says the old browser cannot negotiate TLS with modern endpoints, so its example uses plain HTTP between the Kindle and the proxy over the local network. That is a project-specific design, not a general secure default. Keep that traffic on a trusted LAN; do not expose the proxy or send credentials over an untrusted network.

Understand sleep and refresh behavior

In the project’s documented configuration, three minutes without touch triggers its suspend routine. The e-ink panel retains the last image, and the project uses a power button or RTC alarm to wake the device. These are behaviors of this project’s setup, not guarantees for every Kindle. Its guide also says the browser dashboard’s automatic state refresh stops while the device sleeps, so it is not the right choice if data must keep refreshing on the display during sleep.

Show a rendered Home Assistant image on the sleep screen

For a dashboard that should remain visible while the Kindle is asleep, use a rendered image rather than relying on an open browser page. The E-Ink Dashboard integration renders Home Assistant entity states into PNG images and documents Kindle presets with pull delivery. It points to kndl-online-screensaver for the Kindle-side screen setup.

Match the image to the Paperwhite

Preset Image dimensions listed by the integration
Paperwhite 1, 2, or 3 758 × 1024 pixels
Paperwhite 4 1072 × 1448 pixels

These are preset values in the integration’s documentation, not a promise that every screen-modification method supports every device. Its Paperwhite presets use 16 grayscale levels. A simple, high-contrast layout designed for the actual model is easier to read than a crowded color-oriented dashboard.

Configure delivery and refresh

The E-Ink Dashboard integration documents pull delivery, in which the Kindle-side setup fetches the generated image. Its listed default update interval is 60 seconds; treat that as the integration’s configuration default, not a measured battery-life recommendation or a universal Kindle refresh rate. Review the integration and Kindle extension instructions for the actual endpoint and setup steps for your device.

A separate community guide uses the Lovelace Kindle Screensaver add-on and a Kindle extension to replace the sleep screen. It calls for Kindle modifications and recommends testing a one-off image update before enabling automatic downloads. Follow that project’s instructions for its method; it is not an officially supported, universal Amazon procedure.

Plan for upkeep, security, and battery use

  • Compatibility: The interactive project’s documented test is limited to Paperwhite 1 on firmware 5.3.x. Compatibility of other models and current firmware is not established by these sources.
  • Network security: In the interactive project’s example, the Kindle-to-proxy connection uses plain HTTP on the LAN, while nginx attaches the Home Assistant token server-side. Keep the arrangement within a trusted network and do not treat it as safe for untrusted traffic.
  • Battery expectations: Runtime depends on the device, Wi-Fi activity, refresh frequency, sleep behavior, and the chosen implementation. The cited sources do not provide a controlled battery measurement, so no specific runtime can be promised.
  • Maintenance: A jailbroken device and a local Docker host add setup and upkeep compared with simply viewing a static image. Check each project’s instructions for the exact device and software versions you intend to use.
