Choose a crypto exchange by checking the exact legal entity that would serve you, whether it may offer your intended product where you live, and how that product works. Then compare the specific markets you plan to trade, their full costs and execution, and the platform’s custody and risk terms. A familiar brand, a low advertised trading fee, or regulatory permission for one service does not establish that every product is available or covered.

1. Confirm the exchange can serve you and offer the product

Start with your country—and state or territory where relevant—and identify the legal entity that would open your account. A single brand can use different entities in different regions, with different permissions and available products. Check the entity and the particular service, rather than relying on a global homepage, an app listing, or a general claim that the platform is regulated.

  • Confirm that account opening, deposits, withdrawals, and the product you want are available in your location.
  • Find the serving entity in the platform’s legal terms and verify its status with the relevant regulator or official register.
  • Check permissions and disciplinary history where those records apply. Registration is not a guarantee against fraud or loss.
  • Read the terms for the particular product: spot, perpetual futures, and fixed-maturity futures may not have the same availability or regulatory status.

United States

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) advises checking derivatives intermediaries’ registration and disciplinary history through NFA BASIC where applicable. The CFTC says virtual-currency spot platforms are not required to register with the CFTC; other federal and state requirements or checks may still matter. It also warns that using an offshore firm can leave customers with fewer protections. Verify the current status of the exact entity and service before opening an account. European Union

MiCA Articles 76 and 77 set requirements for crypto-asset trading platforms and exchange disclosures within their applicable scope. Check which entity and services are covered, and consult current national and EU registers. An authorization for one service should not be treated as blanket coverage for other products from the same provider. Do not assume future rules are already in force. The Financial Conduct Authority reported that final rules and guidance published on 30 June 2026 apply to cryptoasset firms granted permission under the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSMA) on or after 25 October 2027. Check the current regime and the particular firm’s status when you compare a service.

2. Match the product to what you intend to trade

Spot trading and derivatives are not interchangeable. In a spot trade, you buy or sell the crypto-asset itself. A derivative is a contract whose value is linked to an underlying asset; its terms determine how exposure, costs, and settlement work.

Product What you trade Expiry and ongoing mechanics Terms to inspect
Spot The crypto-asset itself No futures expiry or perpetual funding mechanism Available pairs, quote and settlement assets, order types, trading costs, and withdrawal terms
Perpetual future A derivative contract No expiry date; periodic funding payments between long and short holders are used to help keep the contract price anchored to spot Funding schedule and history, margin, liquidation, mark price, settlement asset, and position limits
Fixed-maturity future A derivative contract Has a defined expiration date Expiry and settlement process, margin, liquidation, mark price, settlement asset, and position limits

Perpetual funding and fixed-maturity expiry create different costs and exposures. Do not treat a displayed leverage ceiling as a recommended level: leverage magnifies the effect of price moves on margin and can lead to liquidation. The CFTC cautions that “Derivatives products are generally considered high-risk” and advises understanding how a strategy can make or lose money and what fees and other costs apply. 3. Compare the actual markets and contract specifications

Make a list of the exact assets and markets you need, such as a particular spot pair or a contract settled in a particular currency. A platform listing an asset does not necessarily offer it against the quote currency you want, or provide the contract type and order features you need.

For each candidate, verify:

  • Whether the exact spot pair or derivative contract is available to your account in your location.
  • For a derivative, the contract type, contract size, settlement currency, expiry or funding mechanism, and margin model.
  • Whether the order types you need are supported, and whether there are maximum order or position sizes.
  • For derivatives, initial and maintenance margin, liquidation methodology, mark-price rules, funding schedule and history, and settlement terms.
  • Any auto-deleveraging or insurance-fund rules, plus the venue’s policy for outages or interrupted trading.

These contract terms are venue-specific and can change. Read the current official contract documentation rather than inferring details from a product name or a general help page.

4. Estimate the full cost of trading and moving funds

Maker and taker rates are only part of the cost. Estimate the expense of your likely order size and trading pattern, using the markets and funding routes you would actually use.

  • Trading fees: Check the rate that applies to your account and order type, including any conditions attached to a displayed fee tier.
  • Spread and slippage: The spread is the gap between the best available buy and sell prices. Slippage is the difference between an expected price and the execution price. Both can matter more than the headline fee, especially in a thin market or for a larger order.
  • Derivative costs: Include perpetual funding payments, and any margin or borrowing charges that apply. Funding can vary over time; do not treat a single displayed rate as a fixed cost.
  • Conversion and funding: Check charges or exchange-rate effects when converting currencies or assets, depositing, and withdrawing. Note any minimums, limits, or restrictions that affect your intended route.
  • Settlement: Confirm which asset you receive or owe when a trade settles, and what conversion or withdrawal costs may follow.

MiCA Articles 76 and 77 provide observable criteria within their applicable scope, including fair and transparent fees, bid/ask depth, transaction data, pricing information, and order finality. These are legal requirements in scope, not proof that every exchange worldwide meets them or that a particular order will execute at a favorable price. Article 76; Article 77.

5. Check liquidity and execution on your markets

Liquidity is specific to a market and moment; a platform’s overall volume does not tell you how well a particular pair or contract may execute. Examine the order book and recent transaction information for the exact market, and compare bid/ask depth at price levels relevant to your typical order size. Consider how orders are handled, whether execution information is published, and how the platform communicates system outages or interruptions.

Where available, compare the observable depth and spread at the time you plan to trade rather than relying only on a venue’s ranking or volume claim. Deep-looking books can change, and displayed liquidity does not guarantee execution at a particular price.

6. Understand custody, withdrawals, and customer protections

Trading features and asset custody are separate questions. Crypto platforms may combine exchange, broker, and custody roles, which can create conflicts of interest. Find out who holds assets, how withdrawals work, what restrictions may apply, and what recourse the customer terms describe.

Investor.gov says crypto-asset accounts do not receive the bank-deposit or SIPC protections described for other accounts. A platform’s claims or a proof-of-reserves snapshot should not be treated as a guarantee of solvency. Read the account and custody terms, including how the platform handles access controls, withdrawals, and operational problems. Investor.gov investor alert on crypto-asset securities.

If you buy spot assets and choose to withdraw them, you may consider self-custody. A wallet is generally the device or program through which users access crypto assets; direct handling involves public and private cryptographic keys. Self-custody is optional and introduces key-management responsibilities. It does not protect against losses at the exchange before withdrawal, and losing access to keys can create its own risk. 7. Use a side-by-side shortlist before opening an account

Compare each candidate against the same intended use, not against a vague notion of which platform is “best.” Mark a requirement as unmet if you cannot verify it in current official terms or documentation.

  1. Eligibility: Record your location, the serving legal entity, the available product, and the regulator-register or disciplinary-history checks relevant to that service.
  2. Product fit: Write down the exact spot pair or derivative contract, settlement asset, contract size, expiry or funding mechanism, margin model, and required order types.
  3. Cost: Estimate trading fees, spread, slippage, funding or borrowing, conversion, deposit, and withdrawal costs for your intended activity.
  4. Execution: Compare depth and spread on the exact markets, available transaction information, order handling, and outage procedures.
  5. Custody and recourse: Identify who holds assets, withdrawal restrictions, account controls, customer support routes, and the protections that do—and do not—apply.
  6. Decision: Eliminate candidates that fail a legal, product, or custody requirement you consider essential; compare remaining venues on the costs and execution evidence you can verify.

Because fees, listings, eligibility, and contract terms vary by entity and can change, a reliable comparison should be dated and based on current, product-specific primary documentation. The available evidence does not establish a universal best exchange or comparable current venue fees and liquidity across platforms.
