Choose by the activity you do most, then confirm the exact model’s length, width, fit notes and features before buying. New Balance designs shoes around the demands of different activities, but no single walking or running shoe is right for every foot.
Should you buy a walking shoe or a running shoe?
Start with your primary activity rather than choosing by appearance or a remembered shoe size. New Balance says, “We design our running, walking and training shoes to support the unique demands of each activity.” Its general guidance describes running shoes as tending to provide more heel cushioning and running-specific support, while walking shoes are designed with walking mechanics, forefoot flexibility and arch support in mind. If you split your time between both activities, compare models whose product pages explicitly list both uses. For example, New Balance presents the Fresh Foam X More v6 for everyday running and walking. That makes it a model to consider, not a promise that it will fit or feel right for you. How do you determine your New Balance size?
Measure both feet instead of relying only on your usual size. New Balance’s printable measuring tools direct users to align the heel, establish foot length, measure the widest part of each foot, and compare the measurements with the size chart for the chosen product. If the measurements differ, using the larger foot as a conservative starting point is a practical approach; the product page’s chart and fit notes should guide the final choice. - Measure each foot, including its length and the widest part, following the printable tool’s instructions.
- Open the size chart and fit notes on the product page for the specific model you are considering.
- Check the model’s available widths rather than assuming the full range is offered.

New Balance says its shoes generally run true to size, but individual product pages may identify exceptions. Treat the model-specific notes as more useful than a general rule.
What do New Balance shoe widths mean?
New Balance says it offers widths from X-Narrow to XX-Wide, but a particular model may come in only some of them. Check the width selector on that model’s page before deciding it is available in your size. How should you compare cushioning and stability?
Cushioning and underfoot feel
Product descriptions can help distinguish cushioning options, but terms such as “most cushioned” describe the brand’s positioning, not an objective ranking for every person. New Balance describes Fresh Foam X as its most cushioned Fresh Foam experience. Stability features
New Balance describes its stability shoes as featuring technology intended to support runners who overpronate. The Fresh Foam X 860v15 is an example of a stability running shoe, with Stability Plane technology and Fresh Foam X cushioning. A stability label is a feature to compare—not a diagnosis, and not proof that a particular person needs that shoe. Check the current product page for details and fit notes. What should you check before buying?
- Primary use: Look for the activity and use described on the exact product page.
- Length and width: Compare your measurements with that model’s size chart and available width options.
- Fit notes: Check for any model-specific sizing exception rather than assuming all New Balance shoes fit alike.
- Feel and features: Compare the cushioning description and any stability features against what you want from the shoe.
- Current purchase details: Verify price, stock, size and width selection, and return terms at the time you buy; these can change.
When two models remain plausible, the product descriptions can narrow the choice, but they cannot establish which shoe is best for every foot. An in-person fitting is an option if measuring and checking the page do not resolve the fit question.
