Build your energy budget from your household’s actual use and current tariff—not a typical-bill headline. Add up usage-based charges and standing charges, set an allowance you can afford, and review it whenever prices, usage or household circumstances change. A price cap can limit certain rates and charges under its rules; it does not cap your total bill.

What to collect before you set an energy budget

Use your latest bills and, if available, bills covering a full year. A single month may not reflect seasonal changes in heating, hot water or appliance use. Gather:

  • Recent bills and meter readings, including electricity and gas if you use both.
  • Your tariff name, unit rates and standing charges for each fuel.
  • Your payment method and the amount currently collected, if you pay by Direct Debit or another regular arrangement.
  • Any tariff end date or terms that could affect what you pay next.

Use actual meter readings where possible. If a bill is based on estimated readings, compare it with the meter and submit an up-to-date reading to your supplier. Keep the bill’s dates alongside its figures so you do not mistake a partial billing period for a full month.

Estimate what your household will spend

Separate fixed daily charges from charges based on how much energy you use. A simple estimate for a billing period is:

Minute and hour data are retained in the cloud. 1 minute data is retained 7 days, 1 hour data is retained indefinitely. Export cloud data whenever you want in the app.

Estimated cost = (electricity used × electricity unit rate) + (gas used × gas unit rate) + standing charges for each fuel.

Check that the units match: bills commonly show electricity in kilowatt-hours (kWh), while gas meter readings may need conversion before they are comparable with billed kWh. Use the billed consumption and rates where possible, rather than trying to infer a precise cost from an unconverted meter reading. Your bill or supplier can clarify the units and calculation.

For a monthly budget, add the costs across the billing period and divide by the number of months it covers. If you have bills from different seasons, use the year’s total as a starting point and check whether the monthly payment plan spreads that spending evenly. The payment collected each month may not equal the energy used that month; compare it with the account balance and actual bills.

Set an allowance and a manageable buffer

Choose an amount that reflects the estimate and your household’s ability to pay. If you can, leave room for a colder period, a rate change or a rise in use. There is no single buffer percentage that suits every household: a useful cushion depends on income, savings, seasonal variation and how much flexibility you have in other spending.

If you cannot save a separate buffer, make the budget more useful by tracking actual bills and readings regularly. Record planned and actual energy spending in a spreadsheet, notes app or notebook; the tool matters less than noticing a shortfall early. If your estimate is uncertain because readings are estimated or the tariff is changing, mark it as provisional and update it when you have confirmed figures.

Check what a price cap does—and does not do

Ofgem’s price cap applies to default tariffs and sets maximum unit rates and standing charges under its rules. It is not a cap on the total a household can spend: the amount of energy used still affects the bill. A “typical household” figure is a comparison, not a promised bill for your home.

That figure describes a specific, now-ended period; it should not be used as the cap after 30 June 2026. Review your tariff and energy use

When comparing tariff options, look beyond a headline monthly estimate. Compare the unit rates and standing charges for each fuel, payment method, fixed-term conditions and whether the terms fit your likely usage. A tariff that looks cheaper for one household may not suit another with different consumption or payment circumstances.

What current UK bill changes mean for your plan

UK government announcements described an average reduction of £150 in household energy bill costs from April 2026, attributed to policy-cost changes. That is an average, not a guaranteed saving for every household; actual effects vary with consumption. The government’s February 2026 announcement explains the change: DESNZ: energy bills to fall by £150 from April.

The underlying policy announcement said that, from April 2026, 75% of domestic Renewables Obligation costs would be met by the Exchequer and the Energy Company Obligation would no longer be levied on bills in Great Britain. The statement said the UK government would work with the Northern Ireland Executive if it chose to develop a comparable offer. Do not assume that Great Britain policy details apply identically across the UK: DESNZ policy-cost announcement.

For England, the Fuel Poverty Strategy updated in January 2026 estimated that 9 million households—36.3%—were required to spend more than 10% of their income after housing costs on energy in 2024. It estimated the Autumn 2025 Budget package would reduce that number to 7.9 million (32.0%). The strategy also estimated an average household saving of £150 under the package, with examples ranging from £205 for a high-demand rural household with poor energy efficiency to over £440 for a high-use electric storage-heated household. These are national estimates, not individual guarantees: DESNZ Fuel Poverty Strategy for England.

If the bill is becoming unaffordable

Contact your energy supplier as soon as you think you may miss a payment. Explain what you can afford and ask what support or payment arrangement is available. Do not wait for arrears to build before asking for help. Ofgem’s household guidance includes routes for supplier support and bill concerns: Ofgem energy advice for households. For a bill that arrives late or covers an earlier period, see Ofgem’s guidance on what to do if you get a back bill.

Check local-government and national support as well as supplier options. The applicable help depends on where you live and your circumstances; use the official cost-of-living information for your UK nation rather than assuming a scheme applies everywhere. Ofgem’s domestic guidance, published 17 April 2024, says: “As energy prices continue to rise, many people will need extra support.”

When to revisit the budget

Update your estimate after a tariff or price-cap change, a move, a seasonal shift in use, or a change in household circumstances such as someone spending more time at home. A quick review of rates, readings and the account balance can show whether your allowance still matches your likely costs.
