You can buy a PS5 safely through an online marketplace, but the platform’s name alone does not guarantee that a listing, seller, payment, or warranty is safe. Check who is selling the console, verify the item and its condition, understand the marketplace’s return and dispute rules before paying, and test a used console promptly after delivery.
The consumer guidance and warranty details below are U.S.-focused. Marketplace policies, warranty coverage, and consumer rights differ by country, so check the terms that apply to your location and the specific listing.
Before you choose a PS5 listing
Check the seller and listing details
- Read the seller’s ratings, feedback, contact details, and history. Search the marketplace and seller name alongside terms such as “complaint” or “review.” PlayStation also recommends checking a seller’s reputation in its U.S. buying guide.
- Read the full listing. Confirm whether the console is new, used, or refurbished; whether it is sold “as is”; which PS5 model it is; and exactly which accessories, cables, and other items are included.
- Prefer clear photos of the actual console from multiple angles to stock images. If the listing uses stock photos, ask for current photos of the item the seller will ship.
- Treat an unusually low price as a reason to investigate further. The FTC cautions that an expensive item offered at a very low price might be fake; a low price is not proof of fraud, but it warrants careful checks.
Ask for evidence before buying used
Ask the seller to answer questions in writing and, if possible, provide a current video of the console. It should show the PS5 powering on, its ports and buttons, the disc drive if the model has one, and a connection to the internet. Keep the seller’s reply and the listing details in case the delivered item differs from what was represented.

Check the marketplace’s return, refund, delivery, dispute, and buyer-protection terms before you commit. Make sure the rules cover this seller and item, and note the deadlines for reporting a problem or opening a claim. Protection can depend on how you pay and whether you keep the transaction on the platform. The FTC’s online marketplace guidance also advises buyers to review the marketplace’s policies.

How to pay and keep a record
Pay through the marketplace’s own system or another method with a meaningful recourse process. The FTC identifies credit cards and secure online payment systems with buyer protection as safer options. Do not move payment off-platform: doing so may remove marketplace protections. Decline requests for wire transfers, gift cards, cash reload cards, or cryptocurrency, which can be difficult to recover.
Save copies of the listing, seller messages, payment confirmation, shipping information, and delivery packaging. Check the marketplace’s claim deadline as soon as the console arrives; do not wait until the return window is nearly over to report a problem.

What to check when a used PS5 arrives
Compare the delivered console with the listing and any video the seller provided. Test it as soon as practical, while you still have time to use the marketplace’s return or dispute process.
- Condition and identity: Look for physical damage, signs of overheating, broken warranty seals, or a serial number that is missing or appears altered. Check that the console matches the model and condition described.
- Power and picture: Turn it on and check that it starts normally and produces a stable image without obvious image-quality problems.
- Controls and connections: Test the buttons and ports. Connect it to the internet and confirm that it can access PlayStation services.
- Disc drive: If the console has a disc drive, test that it accepts and reads a disc.
- Previous owner’s access: Ask the seller to deactivate the console and remove their access. PlayStation warns that a product reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from PlayStation services, so ask about its history and verify service access rather than assuming it will work.
If the console differs materially from the listing, cannot access PlayStation services, or fails a reasonable test, document the issue and contact the seller and marketplace promptly. Do not continue troubleshooting past a return or dispute deadline without checking the platform’s process.

Does a used PS5 have a warranty?
Do not assume that a third-party used PS5 has a Sony warranty. Sony’s U.S. buying guide states, “Third-party used PlayStation products are not covered by warranty.” Sony Certified Refurbished products are a separate category: PlayStation says those consoles are cleaned, inspected, and tested; include necessary accessories, cables, and manuals; may have minor cosmetic imperfections; and come with its standard one-year limited warranty. Those terms apply to Sony’s certified refurbished products, not to every marketplace listing labeled “refurbished.” See PlayStation Direct’s Certified Refurbished information for its program details.
Sony’s U.S. PS5 limited hardware warranty applies to the original purchaser for one year from the original purchase in the United States and Canada, subject to its terms and exclusions. Warranty service requires valid proof of purchase. The warranty excludes, among other cases, products sold and clearly marked “as is” or with faults, and products with a serial number that has been altered, defaced, or removed. Read Sony’s current PS5 warranty terms and confirm they apply to the console and location in question. A manufacturer warranty is separate from any rights or remedies you may have against a marketplace seller; check local law and the marketplace’s written terms.

Compare a third-party listing with Sony Certified Refurbished
Compare the specific offers rather than relying on the word “refurbished.” Sony’s program terms and an independent seller’s claims are not interchangeable.

If something goes wrong
- Save evidence: the listing, seller messages, payment confirmation, shipping details, packaging, and photos or video of the problem.
- Contact the seller promptly and explain how the console differs from the listing or which test it failed.
- If the seller does not resolve the problem, contact the marketplace and follow its process before the applicable deadline.
- If you paid by card, contact the card issuer to ask about disputing the charge. Follow the issuer’s timing and documentation requirements.
- If you suspect a dishonest business in the United States, the FTC recommends reporting it to the FTC and your state attorney general.
When to walk away
- The seller refuses reasonable questions, current photos, or a basic demonstration for a used console.
- The seller asks you to pay outside the platform or requests a wire transfer, gift cards, cash reload cards, or cryptocurrency.
- The listing’s model, condition, photos, included items, or warranty claims do not add up.
- You cannot verify the marketplace’s protection and return rules for the transaction, or the seller will not let you test the console promptly after delivery.
PlayStation advises buyers to trust their intuition and walk away when something feels wrong. It is safer to miss a listing than to accept unclear terms or a payment method with little recourse.
