A retailer return policy and Sony’s PS5 warranty are separate protections. A return or exchange is usually available only during the seller’s deadline and under its conditions; in the United States and Canada, Sony’s limited hardware warranty covers qualifying defects for one year from the original purchase date for the original purchaser. If a new PS5 is damaged, defective, or incorrect, contact the seller promptly while its return window is open. If the seller’s window has passed, or you need warranty service, use Sony’s repair process.
How a return policy differs from a PS5 warranty
A retailer’s return policy is a time-limited arrangement with the seller. The deadline, eligible condition, proof-of-purchase rules, refund or exchange options, and exceptions depend on the exact listing and transaction. A marketplace seller’s rules may differ from the retailer’s standard policy.
Sony’s limited hardware warranty is a separate manufacturer commitment for qualifying defects in materials or workmanship. For the original purchaser in the United States and Canada, Sony states that the PS5 hardware warranty lasts one year from the original purchase date. For a materially defective product covered during the warranty period, Sony’s stated remedy is repair or replacement with a factory-recertified product, at Sony’s option. How long do you have to return a PS5?
There is no single return deadline for every PS5 purchase. The current policy examples below show why the seller, item category, and order-specific terms matter. They are not guarantees for every console, bundle, open-box unit, marketplace order, or seasonal purchase.

Before buying—or as soon as you receive the console—check the receipt, order page, and item listing for the actual deadline and how it is calculated. Also check who sold the item, what condition and packaging are required, whether the refund is to the original payment method, and whether shipping, membership, or seasonal terms apply. Who should you contact if a new PS5 is defective?
Start with the seller if its return window is open
If the console arrived damaged, defective, or incorrect, contact the seller promptly and follow its return or exchange process. Best Buy, for example, directs customers to return such items during the applicable return and exchange period. Keep the packaging and accessories until you know what the seller requires; do not assume that every retailer or listing has identical condition rules.
Use Sony’s repair process for warranty service
If the seller’s return period has ended, or you are seeking manufacturer warranty service, start with Sony’s PlayStation repairs process for authorization and shipping instructions. Sony requires proof of purchase showing the original purchase date. Its warranty says registering the product does not change the warranty offered.

Prepare before sending a console for service
Sony warns that service can change settings or result in loss of data or content. Before shipping the console, back up storage where possible, remove private content, and disconnect peripherals. Follow Sony’s current repair instructions for what to send and how to package it; do not ship the console until you have the required authorization and instructions.
