For haze or wildfire smoke, choose a room-sized mechanical air cleaner with a published tobacco-smoke Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR). A practical U.S. EPA starting point is a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet; for frequent heavy smoke, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) recommendation cited by EPA is a CADR equal to the room area. Check that the cleaner uses particle filtration, does not rely on ozone-producing technology, and has filters you can replace.
What CADR do you need for smoke?
CADR, or Clean Air Delivery Rate, estimates how much filtered air a cleaner delivers for a particular particle category. For wildfire smoke, use the tobacco-smoke CADR when comparing devices, rather than relying only on a pollen or dust rating. EPA’s 2026 guidance recommends a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. This is a sizing rule of thumb, not a guarantee of a specific indoor particle concentration. EPA wildfire smoke guidance
- Measure the room’s length and width in feet and multiply them to get its area. For an open-plan space, include the area the cleaner is expected to serve.
- Find the cleaner’s tobacco-smoke CADR in its specifications or product documentation.
- Compare that CADR with the room area. For example, EPA’s 2025 guidance says a 10-by-12-foot room, or 120 square feet, needs at least a smoke CADR of 80 under the two-thirds rule. EPA home air cleaner guidance
- For frequent heavy smoke, consider the more conservative AHAM recommendation cited by EPA: choose a CADR equal to the room area. Size up for ceilings taller than eight feet, heavy smoke, or a large space; multiple units may be more practical than one undersized cleaner.
Room-size claims can be harder to compare when a manufacturer does not identify the CADR behind them. EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models, so compare published specifications rather than treating an agency mention as product approval. EPA home air cleaner guidance
Which filtration technology is suitable?
Choose mechanical particle filtration
A mechanical cleaner draws air through a filter that traps particles. EPA identifies HEPA and other pleated mechanical filters as options that effectively trap smoke particles without producing ozone. A HEPA label can be useful, but it does not replace room sizing: check the smoke CADR and make sure the unit can serve the space at the setting you expect to use. EPA wildfire smoke guidance

Avoid ozone generators and use caution with electronic cleaners
EPA does not recommend electronic air cleaners for smoke removal because their smoke-particle effectiveness is unclear and they may produce ozone. Its wildfire guidance also does not recommend photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators, or devices containing UV for smoke removal. EPA warns against using ozone generators in occupied spaces: ozone can irritate airways, and concentrations that meet public-health standards do not effectively remove viruses, bacteria, mold, or other biological pollutants. For wildfire filtration, EPA advises using CARB-certified air cleaners, which produce little or no ozone. EPA wildfire smoke guidance EPA ozone generator guidance
Should you use a portable purifier, HVAC filter, or DIY cleaner?
| Option | When it may fit | What to check | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portable mechanical or HEPA cleaner | A particular room needs dedicated or supplemental filtration. | Tobacco-smoke CADR for the room, ceiling height, ozone status, noise at the setting you will use, and replacement-filter availability and cost. | A room-size claim without a stated CADR is less useful for comparing performance. EPA does not endorse brands or models. EPA |
| Central HVAC filter | Your home has forced-air heating or cooling and the system fan can run. | MERV rating, system compatibility, and how long the fan will operate. | Use MERV 13 or higher only if the system can accommodate it; ask the manufacturer or an HVAC professional if unsure. EPA |
| DIY box-fan filter | A commercial cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable and you can assemble a unit. | Filter thickness and number, shroud design, build quality, and measured performance if available. | Performance varies with the design and components, and the CADR may be unknown. EPA generally prefers commercial cleaners with known CADR for predictable sizing. EPA cleaner-room guidance |
For HVAC, EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. A filter that is too restrictive for the equipment may not be suitable; consult the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional if compatibility is uncertain. Multiple well-placed portable or DIY cleaners may be as effective and may cost less to operate than continuously running central filtration with a high-efficiency filter, depending on the setup. What EPA’s DIY measurements show
EPA’s research summary reports smoke CADR measurements from controlled-chamber tests of specific DIY designs. The values below are not guaranteed performance for a home-built unit; construction and components affect results. EPA reported that a shroud increased CADR by 40% in the tested design. How should you run and maintain the cleaner?
During smoky conditions, EPA’s cleaner-room guidance recommends running a portable cleaner continuously on its highest fan setting if possible. The higher setting may be noisier, so consider the sound level at the setting you are likely to use. Keep windows and doors closed when outdoor air is smoky where practical, reduce indoor particle sources such as candles, smoking, vaping, and aerosols, and check the filter for loading. Smoke events can mean filters need replacement sooner than usual; keep compatible replacement filters available and account for their cost when choosing a unit. Quick selection checklist
- Measure the actual space, including the full open-plan area, and account for ceilings above eight feet.
- Compare the tobacco-smoke CADR with the room area; use at least two-thirds as an EPA wildfire-smoke baseline, and consider a room-area-equivalent CADR for frequent heavy smoke.
- Favor mechanical particle filtration and check ozone status; avoid ozone generators and do not assume an ionizer or other electronic cleaner is suitable for smoke.
- Check noise at the fan setting you expect to use, plus replacement-filter availability and cost.
- For HVAC, confirm the system can handle MERV 13 or the highest compatible rating before installing it.
- If building a box-fan cleaner, treat published DIY measurements as design-specific controlled-test results, not a promise about your build.
