For fast, precise play, a traditional gaming mouse is the safer starting point. A vertical mouse may suit you better if an upright hand posture feels more comfortable, particularly for slower-paced games or a desk setup shared with work. Neither shape is universally better: the best choice depends on your game, grip, button placement, and how the mouse feels in your hand.
What the evidence says about posture and pointing
A vertical mouse changes how your forearm is positioned. In a 2015 study, Peter Johnson and Dan Odell compared a traditional flat mouse, an upright mouse, and three concept designs. All three concepts reduced forearm pronation relative to the flat mouse. The fully vertical mouse reduced pronation, but it also produced the poorest pointing performance among the shapes tested. The study involved 12 participants completing standardized point-and-click tasks, not competitive games. The CDC-hosted study record quotes the authors’ conclusion: “Increasing mouse height and angling the mouse topcase can improve wrist posture without negatively affecting performance.” That finding applies to their task and designs; it does not guarantee the same result for every player or mouse.
This suggests a possible middle ground: a mouse with a raised, angled top rather than a fully upright shape. The study supports the posture-and-pointing potential of that design approach, but it did not test specific retail angled models.
How the shapes compare for gaming
| Factor | Vertical mouse | Traditional gaming mouse |
|---|---|---|
| Hand posture | Upright, handshake-like grip; the cited study found reduced forearm pronation with vertical designs. | Palm-down grip; this was the conventional comparison in the posture study. |
| Fast, precise control | May take adjustment. A PC Gamer reviewer found fine control harder in fast-paced shooters with the Keychron M5. | A sensible starting point when rapid, precise aiming is the priority. |
| Comfort | Some players may prefer the posture, but shape alone cannot guarantee comfort. | May feel more comfortable and controlled if you already prefer a conventional grip. |
| Potential fit | Consider for slower games or mixed work and play; check that the buttons and sensor controls suit you. | Consider for shooters and other games that demand precise, quick movements. |
| Evidence for gaming outcomes | Direct shape research used point-and-click tasks, not competitive gameplay. | Served as a benchmark in the shape study; direct competitive-game comparisons remain limited. |
What gaming-specific research does—and does not—show
A 2023 study by Wang and colleagues recruited 16 professional players to test four mice that varied by connection type and weight. In that study, the wireless mouse had a lower error rate and a higher overall comfort rating. The researchers also compared 80 g and 87 g mice and found no statistically significant difference between those tested weight conditions. The study offers useful context about weight and connection, but it did not compare vertical and traditional shapes, so it cannot establish which shape gives better aim.

- Keychron M5: PC Gamer’s 2026 buying guide describes it as a vertical mouse with up to 30,000 DPI and 8 kHz polling. Its reviewer reported comfortable use and good tracking, but found it less suitable for fast shooters because fine control was harder than with a traditional hand-on-mouse position. This is a reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled esports comparison. Read the PC Gamer guide.
- Razer Pro Click V2 Vertical Edition: Razer lists a 71.7-degree angle, a Focus Pro 30K optical sensor, six buttons, base support, and up to eight programmable controls. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that the mouse will suit every hand or outperform a conventional gaming mouse. See Razer’s product specifications.
Choose by the games you play and the way the mouse feels
Start with a traditional gaming mouse if precision comes first
If you mainly play fast shooters or other games that demand quick, repeatable aiming, a traditional gaming mouse is the lower-risk starting point. That is a practical recommendation, not proof that traditional shapes always perform better: the available shape study did not test competitive gaming.

If an upright grip feels more natural, or you want one mouse for slower-paced games and everyday computer use, a vertical model may be worth trying. Reduced pronation in a small task-based study is a posture finding, not evidence that vertical mice prevent injury or relieve a medical condition.

Try an angled shape if neither extreme feels right
A raised, angled design may offer a compromise between a flat mouse and a fully vertical one. The 2015 study found that increasing height and angling the top case could improve wrist posture without reducing performance in its point-and-click task; that result does not establish how a particular angled mouse will work in your games.

Use a practical fit check
- Choose a returnable setting where you can handle the mouse before committing.
- Use your usual grip and test it in the games you actually play, including the movements that require the most precise control.
- Check whether the buttons are reachable without changing your grip and whether the mouse feels comfortable through a normal play session.
- Compare how reliably you can make the movements you need, rather than choosing on DPI or polling rate alone.
