A common antique locomotive whistle usually sells for a few hundred dollars. A large, unusual, multi-stage example with credible provenance can be valued in the low thousands. The sales below are individual examples, not a market-wide survey, so treat them as reference points and not as a price list.
What recent sales and estimates show
Every figure below comes from a different object, venue and fee arrangement. Do not average them into one “going rate.”

Several individual sales support “a few hundred dollars” for ordinary examples. No source establishes a universal floor or ceiling. The $2,000–$2,500 figure applies to one distinctive, documented 1878 whistle and should not be applied to an unidentified one without comparable evidence.
What changes a whistle’s value
Identification and authenticity
Look for cast-in or stamped maker names, patent marks, railroad names, and model or serial markings. Establishing authenticity and construction can take specialist research. The PBS appraiser James Supp put it this way: “An appraisal usually involves an extensive amount of research to establish authenticity, provenance, composition, method of construction, and other important attributes of a particular object.”

Size and configuration
The PBS appraisal describes collectors as valuing large whistles and singles out the multiple stages of the example it appraised. A small single-note whistle is not a fair comparable for a large multi-chime locomotive whistle.
Completeness and condition
Cracks, repairs, corrosion, missing valves, levers, fasteners or bases all matter. The PBS example was impressive in size and form, yet the appraiser still noted missing parts. Whether it works also matters, and the listings show how cautiously it is described: one sale was “untested,” another only suggested the lever might work. Never represent an untested whistle as operational.

Provenance
A family photograph and oral history helped distinguish the PBS whistle. Keep railroad records, old receipts, labels and a written chain of ownership.

The PBS appraisal says: “The value of an item is dependent upon many things, including the condition of the object itself, trends in the market for that kind of object, and the location where the item will be sold.” Auction, private and online resale results are not interchangeable. Buyer’s premiums, shipping and local collector demand all change what a seller nets. The $400 Lonergan result, for example, is before buyer’s premium.

How to estimate what yours is worth
- Photograph every maker mark, then the whole whistle from all sides with a ruler for scale. Include the openings, chimes, valve, lever, fasteners and base.
- Record dimensions, number of chimes or stages, and every defect or missing part.
- Search sold results, not asking prices. Match maker, size, configuration, completeness and condition as closely as you can.
- Note the date, currency and venue of each comparable. Keep hammer price, buyer’s premium, shipping and taxes separate, because a sold price is not the seller’s net.
- If the whistle is large, multi-stage, rare, marked to a railway, complete or documented, consult a railroadiana specialist or auction house before selling.
What not to do before it is valued
Avoid polishing, disassembling, or trying to blow an old whistle in order to raise its price. None of the sources shows that this improves value, and originality and condition are part of what buyers assess. Generic price guides and asking prices are also weak evidence for an unusual piece.

There is no reliable dataset that normalizes whistle prices by maker, size, condition, provenance, location and fees. The examples here support illustrative comparisons and valuation factors, not a precise appraisal of a whistle nobody has examined.
