Anand Mahindra argues that artificial intelligence may have its biggest opportunity not in writing, talking or creating on screens, but in helping operate industrial processes. He calls this idea “Physical AI,” pointing to a blast furnace, a cement kiln and a factory floor as examples. His remarks describe a potential direction for AI, not proof that these systems are already operating autonomously or delivering measured results.
What does Anand Mahindra mean by Physical AI?
In a report published October 6, 2026, Moneycontrol quoted Mahindra saying: “The world is obsessed with AI that writes, talks and creates. But perhaps the biggest opportunity for AI lies beyond our screens.” He described Physical AI as AI applied to industrial settings and physical processes rather than confined to digital interfaces.
His examples were AI that could operate a blast furnace, manage a cement kiln or orchestrate a factory floor. These illustrate the ambition: connect AI to equipment and industrial operations, where its outputs could influence what happens in the physical world.

How is Physical AI different from screen-based AI?
| Dimension | Digital or screen-based AI | Physical AI, as described by Mahindra |
|---|---|---|
| Where it acts | Digital interfaces and information, such as writing, conversation or content creation. | Industrial environments and physical processes, including furnaces, kilns and factory floors. |
| Operational role | Can generate or process information; its role in a real-world operation depends on how people use its output. | Could support operational decisions or actions connected to equipment and processes. |
| Evidence in the report | No comparative benchmark is provided. | No comparative benchmark or measured operational result is provided. |
A related shift is from predictive insight—identifying patterns or anticipating conditions—to prescriptive operational support, in which AI helps determine or coordinate what should happen next. The report points toward that broader role but does not specify how any system would make decisions, what human oversight it would require, or how its performance compares with existing methods.

Can AI operate a factory floor?
Mahindra presents that possibility as an opportunity, but the report does not establish that AI is currently operating a factory floor, blast furnace or cement kiln in the examples he names. It gives no deployment status, autonomy level, safety controls or attributable performance statistics. The distinction matters: describing a possible application is not evidence of a live system or a proven operational outcome.
In industrial settings, a useful evaluation would need to show what data the system uses, what decisions it can make, whether people approve or supervise actions, how safety is handled, and what results have been measured. Those details are not supplied in the report.

What partnership does the report mention?
The report connects Mahindra’s comments with industrial AI partnership news involving Tech Mahindra, but its descriptions are inconsistent. Its headline and subheading refer to Tech Mahindra and Infinite Uptime combining Infinite Uptime’s PlantOS with Tech Mahindra’s manufacturing and IT-OT integration capabilities. Another passage says AI4ProdOutcomes’ Physical AI models will work alongside Tech Mahindra AI agents. The report does not explain whether these references describe one initiative or separate efforts, so their relationship remains unclear.
That ambiguity also means the partnership references should not be treated as confirmation that the examples Mahindra named are already deployed, or that a particular system has achieved specified results.

Does AI’s biggest opportunity lie beyond screens?
That is Mahindra’s view of the opportunity, not a measured forecast. Physical AI is a useful label for the proposed move from AI that primarily handles digital information toward AI connected to machinery and industrial processes. Whether that opportunity becomes practical at scale depends on capabilities and safeguards that the report does not detail, as well as independently demonstrated results.
