Two separate studies published in Nature Astronomy on 5 October 2026 describe dwarf-star systems gaining material from nearby companions—but in very different ways. In one, a brown dwarf appears to transfer mass steadily to an M dwarf. In the other, a white dwarf shows evidence consistent with material falling from a candidate planet. Neither study shows dwarf stars generally swallowing planets, and the second-generation planet remains a candidate rather than a directly imaged world.
What the two studies found
The headline joins two systems, not one event. The objects involved, the evidence researchers observed and the proposed transfer mechanisms differ.
| Study | Host star | Companion supplying material | Evidence and interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Householder and colleagues, 2026 | Main-sequence M dwarf | Brown dwarf | ZTF J0440+2325 is an 86.65-minute binary interpreted as undergoing stable mass transfer from the brown dwarf to the M dwarf. |
| Williams and colleagues, 2026 | White dwarf HS 0209+0832 | Candidate second-generation planet | An unusual atmospheric chemical signature, including niobium, and periodic dimming are consistent with a close-in planet losing material to the white dwarf. |
How a brown dwarf can feed an M dwarf
A brown dwarf is a substellar object: it is more massive than a planet but not massive enough to sustain the hydrogen fusion that powers ordinary stars. In ZTF J0440+2325, the two objects orbit each other every 86.65 minutes. Householder and colleagues interpret their observations as stable transfer of material from the brown dwarf onto its M-dwarf companion, rather than an immediate, destructive engulfment. The study in Nature Astronomy reports the system and its interpretation.
The distinction matters: “gobbling up” is an accessible image for material transfer, but it can suggest a sudden collision. The proposed process here is ongoing transfer within a close binary. The paper also presents ZTF J1444+4820 as a strong candidate for a low-mass mass-transferring system in a hierarchical triple; it is a candidate, not the same system as ZTF J0440+2325.

Why the white dwarf’s atmosphere points to a planet
White dwarfs are compact stellar remnants left after stars exhaust their fuel and shed their outer layers. Williams and colleagues report that the white dwarf HS 0209+0832 has an unusual atmospheric chemical signature that includes niobium. They also report periodic dimming consistent with a close-in planet. Taken together, these clues support their interpretation that material from the planet is accreting onto the white dwarf. The Williams et al. paper describes the evidence.
The proposed planet is a candidate second-generation planet: a world that formed after its host star left the main sequence, from material associated with the star’s evolution. The evidence is indirect. It is not a direct image of a newly formed planet, and the interpretation should not be described as a confirmed planet being watched as it is consumed.

Why these are different kinds of mass transfer
The two studies share a broad theme—material moving from a companion to a dwarf star—but the systems are not interchangeable. ZTF J0440+2325 pairs a brown dwarf with a living, main-sequence M dwarf, and the reported interpretation is stable transfer in a tight binary. HS 0209+0832 is a white dwarf, and its atmospheric pollution and periodic dimming support an interpretation involving a candidate planet formed after the original star’s main-sequence life.

What the discoveries do—and do not—tell us
These observations establish intriguing examples, not how common either process is. The studies do not provide a population rate showing how often brown dwarfs transfer mass to M dwarfs or planets feed white dwarfs. A possible second-generation planet after the Sun’s death is a theoretical implication of the white-dwarf result, not an observed prediction of what will happen to our Solar System.
