Lizzie, the famous Scottish fossil, was not a lizard or an early reptile. A new X-ray study of the 345-million-year-old fossil Westlothiana lizziae revealed internal gills, a primitive skull and a mouth lined with thousands of tiny teeth. The researchers now classify Lizzie as a derived stem tetrapod—a relative on an older branch of the vertebrate family tree—and infer that it lived in or around water.
Was Lizzie really a lizard?
No. “Lizzie” is the nickname for Westlothiana lizziae, a fossil found at East Kirkton quarry in West Lothian, Scotland, in 1984. Its lizard-like outline, four limbs, five-toed feet and claw-like digits helped make it look like an early land vertebrate. When it was described in 1990, it was presented as an early land-adapted amniote—the broad group that includes reptiles, birds and mammals.
That interpretation has now been challenged by anatomy hidden within the crushed fossil. In a study announced on 30 September 2026, researchers used X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility’s ID19 beamline to examine two fossil slabs. They argue that Lizzie belongs instead among derived stem tetrapods: an older lineage of four-limbed vertebrates outside the amniotes. It was not a modern lizard, and the reclassification does not mean a lizard literally changed into another animal.

What did scientists find inside the fossil?
The scans exposed features that were difficult or impossible to make out from the fossil’s deformed surface. The researchers report a primitive skull, ossified internal gills and a fish-like mouth containing thousands of tiny teeth. These features point to an animal that retained anatomy associated with more aquatic ancestors, despite its land-animal-looking limbs.

The contrast is important: the feet and claws are visible evidence, but they do not establish that Lizzie was an amniote or that it lived entirely on land. The internal anatomy changes how those outward traits are interpreted. The study’s authors infer an aquatic or amphibious lifestyle; the fossil does not directly record the animal’s habitat or daily behavior.
Why does Lizzie’s reclassification matter?
Lizzie had been used as a reference point in discussions of early amniote evolution. Reclassifying it means its terrestrial-looking features cannot be treated as proof that it belonged to that group. The study instead supports a piecemeal view of how such traits evolved: features like weight-bearing limbs and claw-like digits may have appeared in close relatives of amniotes that still lived in and out of water.

The finding also affects how scientists interpret ancient clawed trackways. Some tracks that might seem to indicate an amniote could have been made by earlier amphibious tetrapod relatives. A footprint can preserve the shape of a foot, but it does not by itself reveal all the hidden anatomy needed to identify the track-maker’s place on the family tree.
Where can you see Lizzie?
National Museums Scotland says the fossil is displayed in the Survival gallery at the National Museum of Scotland. Its collection page provides background on the East Kirkton discovery; that page predates or does not yet reflect the new classification, so it is useful for collection context rather than the reclassification.
