Yes—standby lets a smart TV wake from its remote, and some standby modes also keep network features or background tasks available. The trade-off is electricity use: passive standby may draw very little, while quick-start or network-active modes can use more. Whether to leave it on standby depends on which features you actually use and how much power your specific TV draws.

What standby mode keeps available

“Standby” is not one single state. ENERGY STAR distinguishes passive standby from active standby. Passive standby keeps a TV ready to respond to a remote control or internal signal. Network-capable active standby may also respond to external signals, exchange data, or maintain services while the screen is off. The precise behavior depends on the model and its settings.

On some TVs, active standby can support features such as electronic program guide data, setup data, channel-map or firmware updates, emergency communications, and other network communications. A quick-start option may make the TV available faster, but convenience features can increase standby draw.

How much electricity can standby use?

ENERGY STAR’s current television criteria set maximum measured power of 0.5 W for standby-passive and 1.0 W for standby-active on network-capable TVs. These are qualification limits under specified test procedures—not a promise that every TV, setting, or real-world configuration will draw exactly that amount or less. See ENERGY STAR’s television criteria.

Actual models and modes vary. A DOE-hosted 2022 presentation from Fraunhofer USA, based on historical data for more than 9,000 TV models, reports that passive standby was below 1 W for most models sold after 2008. It also reports that some quick-start models used more than 10 W in active standby, while other models offered similar functions at much lower power. Those historical findings illustrate why the TV’s own specifications and settings matter; they are not a measurement of every current television. Read the presentation.

For perspective, 1 W drawn continuously for a year equals 8.76 kWh; 10 W continuously would equal 87.6 kWh. These are arithmetic illustrations, not claims about how much a particular TV uses: actual standby draw can change with mode, settings, and time spent in that state. Your electricity cost depends on your utility rate.

When keeping the TV in standby makes sense

  • You want to switch it on with the remote without restoring power at the wall.
  • You use network wake, quick start, or a service that needs the TV to remain connected while the screen is off.
  • You want the TV to perform background tasks supported by its active standby mode, such as updating data or software.

If those functions are useful, standby provides convenience and continued availability. The question is whether that benefit is worth the power your TV uses in the mode you have enabled.

When to disable standby features or cut power

If you do not use network wake, instant start, or background functions, look in the TV’s settings or manual for options such as Quick Start, Network Standby, or a power-saving mode. Names and behavior vary by manufacturer. Changing the setting may reduce draw, but check what features it disables.

To disconnect a TV and its components when the system is not in use, a switched or smart power strip is an option. The U.S. Department of Energy says a smart power strip can “prevent energy waste when the system is not powered on.” Cutting mains power also makes remote wake and standby-dependent downloads or network presence unavailable until power is restored. Do not switch off equipment that needs continuous power without checking the manufacturer’s instructions. DOE television purchasing guidance.

How to check your own TV’s standby draw

  1. Check the manual. Find the standby, network, and quick-start options, along with any published power figures for the exact model.
  2. Choose the mode you want to evaluate. Note which wake and background features are enabled; changing them changes what standby does.
  3. Measure at the outlet if you need a household-specific answer. A plug-in power meter can show the draw of the TV system in standby. Because some values are below 1 W, confirm that the meter can measure accurately at low loads; do not assume every inexpensive meter can.
  4. Compare the result with your needs. If standby draw is more than you are comfortable with and you do not rely on the retained functions, try a lower-power setting or switch power off when appropriate.

Keep whole-TV efficiency separate from standby savings

Standby is only one part of a television’s energy use. Screen size, viewing hours, brightness, and display settings also matter. ENERGY STAR says certified televisions are, on average, about 34% more efficient than conventional models across sleep, idle, and on modes; that is an overall comparison, not a standby-only saving. Likewise, DOE’s purchasing example for a 54.5-inch LED TV estimates 168 kWh per year and $18 in annual energy cost for the ENERGY STAR example, versus 235 kWh and $26 for a less-efficient comparison. The example assumes 1,825 active hours and 6,935 standby hours annually, five years of product life, and electricity at 11 cents/kWh based on federal-facility prices as of July 2024. It models whole-TV use, not savings from changing standby behavior, and its costs should not be treated as a household estimate. The same guidance’s $31 lifetime energy-cost difference applies only under its stated assumptions. DOE’s assumptions and purchasing guidance.
