Streaming has given some 1990s series a new audience, but a streaming resurgence is not the same as a revival—and a past streaming home does not guarantee a show is available there now. The clearest evidence points to Seinfeld and The Simpsons, while reporting on Friends, Full House and Arrested Development illustrates how rediscovery and new episodes differ.
What “a second life” on streaming means
A show gets a second life when a later wave of viewers discovers or watches it through streaming, often years after its original broadcast. That can happen through a licensing deal that puts old episodes in a service’s catalog; it does not mean the show has been renewed or that new episodes exist.
A formal revival is different: a service or network commissions new episodes after the original run. The distinction matters because streaming can renew interest in a series without bringing its cast back or continuing its story. The Los Angeles Times’ 2017 account described both the discovery of older titles by younger viewers and streaming services ordering new episodes of canceled shows.

Nielsen’s March 2023 analysis offers evidence that library programs still reached younger viewers. Among women aged 18–34, 18 of the 25 most-streamed programs in 2022 were licensed library titles. That group streamed just under 77 billion minutes of those programs, out of almost 105 billion minutes for all 25 titles. Nielsen’s analysis included Seinfeld and The Simpsons in that top 25.

Those figures describe one demographic and one year; they are not an all-audience ranking of the most-streamed shows. The scale of available content helps explain why rediscovery is possible: Nielsen cited Gracenote data showing more than 926,000 titles across linear and streaming channels as of January 2023, including more than 821,000 on streaming platforms.
Seinfeld: a measurable post-broadcast audience
A separate, earlier data point shows how quickly a familiar series could draw viewers after a streaming debut. Next TV reported from Nielsen data that Seinfeld recorded 590 million U.S. streaming minutes during the week of October 4–10, 2021, soon after its Netflix debut. About 25% of Netflix users streaming the series that week had been born after its NBC run ended in 1998. This is a single week’s result, not a current ranking or a measure directly comparable with Nielsen’s 2022 demographic figures.

That younger-viewer figure is a concrete example of a series crossing generational boundaries: some viewers could encounter the show through streaming without having watched its original network run.
The Simpsons: an enduring library title
Nielsen also counted The Simpsons among the 25 most-streamed programs among women aged 18–34 in 2022, and its analysis noted a younger co-viewing pattern. The finding supports continued streaming interest in the series, but it does not establish a current platform, a new revival, or a ranking beyond that specific audience and year.

Other 1990s series documented as streaming discoveries
Friends: a younger generation finds the sitcom
In 2017, the Los Angeles Times reported that streaming executives saw Friends performing strongly and described younger viewers discovering it. Co-creator Marta Kauffman recalled a young viewer asking, “Have you seen this new show called ‘Friends’?” The anecdote captures the gap between a show’s original era and its later discovery; it is not a present-day audience measurement.
Full House: an example of changing catalog plans
The same 2017 report included Full House among older familiar programs competing for streaming viewers and noted Hulu’s planned library addition at the time. That detail is historical, not evidence that Hulu—or any particular service—currently carries the series.

Arrested Development: rediscovery plus a formal revival
Arrested Development illustrates the difference between a show finding an audience online and a show receiving new episodes. The Los Angeles Times reported in 2017 that streaming services had ordered fresh episodes of the canceled series. It belongs in the revival category as well as the broader story of older television reaching streaming viewers.

The 2017 report discussed Gilmore Girls as both a streaming discovery and a revival. However, Nielsen identifies its debut year as 2000, so it is not a 1990s-debut series. It helps illustrate the pattern but should not be counted among shows that began in the 1990s.

Why older shows can work for streaming audiences
Streaming makes it easier for a library title to remain accessible beyond its original broadcast window, and a new viewer can start with an episode or watch several in sequence. The cited reporting points to discovery and familiarity, not a single proven cause for any show’s popularity. Genre and format also vary: the examples include sitcoms and an animated series, so their appeal should not be reduced to one formula.
Nielsen television historian Brian Fuhrer cautioned that not all streaming is easy or light viewing: “Some of these powerful programs can be emotionally draining to stream. It can be hard to binge content like that, especially when the world is already so complex today.” For other viewers, entertainment can be a draw; then-Hulu content acquisition executive Lisa Holme said, “Most people also want TV to be entertaining and not feel like work.” These observations describe different reasons people may choose older programs, rather than proving why any individual title performed well.
How to find a series now
Streaming rights move between services and differ by country. Articles describing a platform’s plans or catalog in 2017 or 2021 are not reliable evidence of where a show is available today. Search the title in the streaming apps available in your region or check a current catalog guide before subscribing; confirm whether the listing includes the seasons or episodes you want.

If uninterrupted access matters, physical media may be an alternative to changing streaming catalogs. TIME has discussed Seinfeld’s 180 episodes and DVD production, but that does not establish current retail availability. Check a seller’s current listing and confirm the edition and included episodes before buying.
