Ethereum gas is the fee paid for processing a transaction. You cannot eliminate the network’s base fee, but you can often reduce what you pay by choosing a better time, setting fee parameters correctly, avoiding unnecessary transactions, or moving suitable activity to a Layer 2 network.

These methods apply to Ethereum mainnet. Wallet labels differ, so look for settings such as Advanced gas controls, Max priority fee, Max fee, and Gas limit rather than expecting one universal menu path.

1. Submit transactions when demand is lower

Ethereum’s base fee responds to block utilization, not to the clock. When blocks exceed their gas target, the base fee rises; when blocks are below target, it falls. A full block can increase the next block’s base fee by as much as 12.5%, while an empty block can reduce it by as much as 12.5%.

That makes “send it at night” or “wait for the weekend” an unreliable rule. A major NFT mint, token launch, market movement, or airdrop can make any hour expensive.

  1. Open a live gas tracker before confirming the transaction.
  2. Compare the current base fee and suggested priority fees.
  3. Wait for a quieter period if the transaction is not time-sensitive.
  4. Check the tracker again immediately before submitting; conditions can change quickly.

Ethereum.org currently lists tools including Etherscan Transaction Gas Price Estimator, Blockscout’s gas estimator, ETH Gas Tracker, and Blocknative ETH Gas Estimator.

2. Lower the priority fee when speed is not important

An EIP-1559 Type 2 transaction separates the fee into two parts:

Setting What it does
maxPriorityFeePerGas The tip offered to the validator to encourage inclusion.
maxFeePerGas The maximum total fee per gas unit, including the base fee and tip.

The base fee is burned; the priority fee goes to the validator. If you do not need immediate inclusion, reducing the priority fee can lower the effective price while still allowing the transaction to be mined.

Do not set it arbitrarily low during congestion. A transaction paying only the base fee is valid, but validators are less likely to select it while competing transactions offer tips. Your wallet normally recommends a priority fee based on current conditions, so reduce it gradually through the wallet’s advanced fee controls and expect a longer wait.

There is no Ethereum-wide “correct” tip and no universal wallet menu path. The appropriate setting depends on the transaction type, current demand, and how long you are prepared to wait.

3. Use a sensible maximum fee ceiling

maxFeePerGas is a ceiling, not automatically the amount you pay. For a Type 2 transaction to execute, it must cover the included block’s base fee plus the priority fee. If the actual amount is lower than your maximum, the unused allowance is refunded.

For example, if you set a maximum of 80 gwei, but the included block requires a 35 gwei base fee and your priority fee is 2 gwei, the effective price is generally 37 gwei—not 80 gwei.

A high ceiling can help a transaction remain eligible during a short base-fee increase, but it does not guarantee instant confirmation. Conversely, a ceiling below the required base fee can leave the transaction pending until conditions improve.

In your wallet’s advanced gas settings:

  1. Keep the estimated priority fee appropriate for your urgency.
  2. Set a maximum fee that covers a realistic short-term increase.
  3. Do not confuse the ceiling with the amount that will actually be charged.
  4. Check the final fee preview before signing.

This corrects a common misconception: Type 2 transactions do not normally charge the full maximum fee. The actual base fee and priority fee determine the effective price.

4. Do not cut the gas limit just to reduce the fee

The gas limit is the maximum amount of computation the transaction may use. It is not the same as the gas price. A standard ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas units. For contract interactions, use the wallet’s estimate or the application’s recommended limit.

Increasing the limit above the amount actually used does not automatically increase the final fee; unused gas is returned. Reducing it below the transaction’s requirement is risky:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Validation failure: the limit may be rejected before inclusion if it cannot meet intrinsic requirements. In that case, no gas is consumed.
  • Out-of-gas execution: the contract can begin running, exhaust the supplied gas, and revert. State changes are undone, but the supplied gas is consumed.

Developers can request an estimate with the JSON-RPC method eth_estimateGas:

curl -X POST --data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"eth_estimateGas","params":[{transaction_object}],"id":1}'

This simulates the transaction; it does not add it to the blockchain. Estimates can be higher than the gas ultimately used, and they can be insufficient if execution requirements change. For ordinary wallet users, the practical rule is simple: do not manually lower the gas limit unless you understand the contract call and its estimate.

5. Use Type 2 transactions instead of legacy pricing when supported

Type 2 transactions were introduced by the London Upgrade and are the standard transaction type on Ethereum. They use maxPriorityFeePerGas and maxFeePerGas rather than one gasPrice field.

Legacy Type 0 transactions still exist, but they do not provide EIP-1559’s separate base-fee and priority-fee fields. If your wallet or application offers a choice, use the EIP-1559 or Type 2 option unless the destination service specifically requires legacy transactions.

Type 2 does not make a congested network cheap. It makes fee calculation more predictable by separating the protocol-controlled base fee from your validator tip. Congestion can still raise the base fee substantially.

For context, Ethereum also supports Type 1 access-list transactions, Type 3 blob transactions used mainly for Layer 2 data posting, and Type 4 transactions introduced by EIP-7702. Those are specialized transaction formats; choosing Type 2 is the normal fee-management decision for a standard wallet transfer or contract interaction.

6. Move eligible activity to an Ethereum Layer 2

For frequent swaps, transfers, mints, or application interactions, the largest saving may come from not using Ethereum mainnet for every action. Layer 2 networks process activity away from mainnet and periodically use Ethereum for security or data settlement, reducing the cost per user transaction.

Ethereum.org currently lists networks including Arbitrum One, Base, Scroll, Unichain, Optimism, ZKsync Era, Zircuit, and Linea. Arbitrum One and OP Mainnet are examples of general-purpose optimistic rollups.

  1. Confirm that the application supports the chosen network.
  2. Check that the token exists on that network and that you have its native gas token if required.
  3. Bridge funds using a reputable bridge or the application’s supported route.
  4. Send a small test amount before moving a large balance.
  5. Verify the recipient network before signing; sending to the wrong network can make recovery difficult or impossible.

Not every network marketed as an “Ethereum network” is an Ethereum Layer 2. Ethereum.org distinguishes rollups partly by whether their data is stored on Ethereum mainnet. Security, smart-contract design, bridge risk, and network maturity also differ, so compare those factors rather than choosing solely by the lowest displayed fee.

7. Use eth_call for read-only information

Checking a token balance, reading a contract setting, or previewing other read-only data should not require a paid transaction. Solidity functions marked view or pure can be executed through an RPC call. The relevant JSON-RPC method is eth_call.

eth_call runs the request immediately without creating a blockchain transaction and consumes zero gas. Its call object includes the contract’s to address and encoded function calldata:

curl -X POST --data '{"jsonrpc":"2.0","method":"eth_call","params":[{transaction_call_object},"latest"],"id":1}'

The failure mode is common in poorly designed interfaces: a front end opens the wallet and asks you to approve a normal transaction for an operation that only reads state. That transaction is unnecessary and creates a fee. A read-only balance or quote should normally be obtained with an RPC call instead.

8. Combine related actions only when the application supports batching

Every separate smart-contract transaction has its own transaction overhead and fee. If an application provides a batch, multicall, router, or bundled operation, several compatible actions may be submitted together instead of paying for multiple transactions.

Batching is not automatically cheaper. The batch contract adds calldata and execution work, and the result depends on its implementation. You cannot safely merge arbitrary wallet transactions by changing a gas setting.

Before using a batch feature, compare:

  • the estimated gas for one batch call;
  • the combined estimates for the separate calls;
  • any extra approval or contract fees;
  • what happens if one action in the batch fails.

For example, an application might support a multicall that performs several contract reads or a router that executes a sequence of swaps. Use the application’s documented feature, not an unfamiliar contract copied from a chat message or social-media post.

Review token approvals

An ERC-20 approval changes contract state and therefore costs gas. Do not submit a new approval if the application already has a sufficient allowance. Some applications support permit-style authorization, which can avoid a separate approval transaction, but availability depends on the token and application.

Check a stuck transaction before clicking again

Ethereum accounts use sequential nonces. A replacement transaction can use the same nonce as a pending transaction, but it is another transaction attempt—not a refund.

  1. Copy the transaction hash from the wallet.
  2. Look it up on a block explorer.
  3. Check whether it is pending, confirmed, or failed.
  4. Only submit a replacement or retry when you understand the current status.

You can query a receipt through JSON-RPC with eth_getTransactionReceipt. Repeatedly pressing Confirm or resubmitting while a wallet appears stuck can create multiple pending transactions or replacement attempts. If the original transaction was already mined, replacing it does not recover its gas fee.

Also remember that a failed transaction is not necessarily free. If a transaction was included and its contract execution reverted or ran out of gas, the supplied gas was consumed even though state changes were undone. Only a transaction rejected during pre-inclusion validation avoids consuming gas.

FAQ

What is the cheapest time to use Ethereum?

There is no guaranteed cheapest hour or day. Ethereum’s base fee follows block utilization, so check a live gas tracker immediately before sending and wait for lower demand when possible.

Does setting a high max fee mean I will pay that full amount?

No. For an EIP-1559 Type 2 transaction, maxFeePerGas is a ceiling. The effective price is based on the included block’s base fee plus the priority fee, and the unused allowance is refunded.

Can I lower the gas limit to reduce an Ethereum fee?

Do not do this arbitrarily. Unused gas is returned, so a higher estimated limit does not necessarily increase the final fee. A limit that is too low can cause rejection or an out-of-gas failure that still consumes gas.

Are Layer 2 transactions always safer and cheaper?

Layer 2 transactions are often cheaper, but costs and risks differ. Check network support, bridge arrangements, smart-contract security, maturity, and whether the network’s data is secured through Ethereum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why did a failed Ethereum transaction still cost gas?

If the transaction was included and execution reverted or ran out of gas, computation was performed and the supplied gas was consumed. A transaction rejected before inclusion for insufficient intrinsic gas is a different case and consumes no gas.

The Bottom Line

The safest fee reductions are usually operational: check a live tracker, wait when practical, use Type 2 fee fields, set a realistic maximum rather than an extreme one, and leave the gas limit estimate intact. For larger savings, use a supported Layer 2 and avoid turning read-only checks, duplicate approvals, or repeated retries into paid transactions. Always verify the network, contract, transaction hash, and final wallet preview before signing.
