The most useful turntable upgrades are practical, not decorative: a record brush for loose dust, a dry stylus brush, a tracking-force gauge, correctly matched replacement parts, and a way to level the deck. A record-cleaning machine, new cartridge or headshell, and replacement belt solve more specific problems. None is universal, and no accessory guarantees better sound; check your turntable and cartridge manuals before ordering parts.
Which accessories solve which turntable problems?
Use this table to match an accessory to a real task rather than buying by appearance. “Compatibility burden” means how carefully you must match the item to your equipment.
| Accessory | Primary job | Compatibility burden | Best use case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Record brush | Remove loose dust from record surfaces before playback | Low | Routine care for every record |
| Dry stylus brush | Remove dust from the stylus and cantilever | Low, but technique-sensitive | Regular stylus maintenance |
| Tracking-force gauge | Measure stylus force at the record | Low for measurement; the cartridge specification is the authority | Initial setup or troubleshooting mistracking |
| Compatible replacement stylus | Restore a worn or damaged stylus | Very high | When the existing stylus is worn |
| Record-cleaning machine | Provide deeper, more involved record cleaning | Low to moderate | Large collections or visibly dirty records |
| Turntable level | Check whether the deck is sitting level | Low | Setup on a new shelf or after moving the deck |
| Replacement cartridge | Change the transducer that reads the groove | High | Damaged, worn or deliberately upgraded cartridge |
| Replacement headshell | Hold a compatible cartridge on a detachable arm mount | High | Damaged headshell or a pre-mounted cartridge swap |
| Drive belt | Restore correct platter drive on a belt-drive deck | Very high | Stretching, slipping or a broken belt |
The nine worthwhile turntable gadgets and accessories
1. Record brush for loose surface dust
A record brush is the simplest useful purchase. Run it over the record surface before playback to collect loose dust and grit that would otherwise reach the stylus. Ortofon describes a record brush as a surface-cleaning tool and says cleaning records before use reduces dust and dirt that can wear the stylus.
A carbon-fiber vinyl record cleaning brush is a common search term for this category, but the important characteristic is the brush’s intended use, not a particular material or brand. Hold the brush lightly, let it contact the grooves, and lift it away rather than pressing hard. A brush does not remove embedded grime, oily fingerprints or residue, and it does not replace a deeper wet-cleaning process.

2. Dry stylus brush
Dust on the stylus can affect tracking and accumulates even when records look clean. Ortofon’s stylus-care direction is to use a dry fiber brush a few times along the cantilever toward the stylus tip whenever you play a new record or change sides. The safe motion is from the rear of the cartridge toward the tip; do not brush sideways or from the tip toward the rear.
- Stop the platter and secure the tonearm so it cannot swing.
- Approach the stylus from behind the cartridge.
- Make a few very light strokes toward the stylus tip.
- Return the brush to its holder and inspect the stylus under good light.
Do not assume a cleaning fluid is safe because it is sold for record care. Ortofon warns that solvents can damage stylus cement or cartridge internals. Some cartridges have different manufacturer instructions, so your cartridge manual takes precedence over generic advice. Never touch the cantilever with a finger or push the stylus sideways.
3. Tracking-force gauge
Tracking force is the downward force the cartridge applies to the record. It is cartridge-specific: too little force can cause mistracking, while an incorrect tonearm balance or force setting can damage a record or stylus. Audio-Technica’s LPW40WN/LPW30TK manual states, “In order for the cartridge to reproduce audio correctly from the record’s grooves, the tonearm’s balance and tracking force must be adjusted to fit the specifications of the cartridge.”
A gauge lets you check the actual force instead of relying only on the numbered counterweight. The Ortofon stylus-pressure gauge is specified for measurements from 1.25 g to 4 g; that range and its operating method apply to that gauge, not to every model. Set the cartridge maker’s recommended value, place the gauge at the correct height on the platter, and verify the reading after balancing the arm. A gauge does not tell you what force to choose—the cartridge specification does.

4. Model-matched replacement stylus
A replacement stylus is often the most economical repair when the generator and cartridge body are still healthy. It is also the accessory most likely to be bought incorrectly. Styli are not universal, even within one manufacturer’s range.
For example, Audio-Technica’s AT-LP2022 quick-start guide identifies the AT-VMN95SH CL as its replacement stylus. The separate AT-LP3 manual lists the ATN91R. Those references demonstrate model-specific fit, not interchangeability between the two turntables. Search for “replacement stylus for [your exact turntable model]” only after confirming the cartridge model printed on the cartridge body or in the manual.
- Identify the turntable model and cartridge model.
- Read the manual’s approved stylus part number.
- Compare the replacement’s mounting shape and cantilever orientation with the original.
- After installation, rebalance the tonearm and set tracking force again.
- Play a record you know well at low volume and listen for obvious mistracking before extended use.
Audio-Technica’s 2019 LPW40WN/LPW30TK manual gives 300 hours as a rule of thumb for stylus replacement. Treat that as model-family guidance, not a universal lifespan: record cleanliness, tracking force, alignment and playing conditions all affect wear. Replace immediately if the cantilever is bent, the tip is visibly damaged or the cartridge sounds distorted after setup checks.

A machine is an optional step beyond a brush. Ortofon says a record-cleaning machine may be considered for greater ease and quality of record cleaning. It is most useful if you regularly buy used records, maintain a large collection or need a repeatable process for records with embedded dirt.

Follow the machine’s fluid, brush and drying instructions exactly. Keep dirty fluid away from the platter, cartridge and tonearm, and allow a record to dry fully before placing it in a clean inner sleeve. A machine is not automatically better for every listener: occasional players may need only routine dust removal and careful manual cleaning, while a frequent collector may value the time saved.
6. Turntable level
A small bubble level is a setup accessory, not a sound-effect gadget. Audio-Technica’s LPW40WN/LPW30TK manual recommends using a separately sold level as needed. Place the level on the turntable’s stable, non-spinning surface according to the manual, check in both directions, and adjust the furniture or deck feet if the design permits.
Level the support first; adjusting feet cannot compensate for a shelf that flexes or rocks. Recheck after moving the turntable, changing a heavy accessory or installing it in a different room. Use your deck’s setup procedure if it specifies another measurement point.

7. Replacement cartridge
The cartridge converts groove movement into an electrical signal, so replacing it can be meaningful when the original is damaged, worn or unsuitable for the arm. It is not a universal plug-and-play upgrade. Ortofon advises considering total effective tonearm mass, cartridge and headshell mass, and cartridge compliance together.

Before buying, verify the tonearm mount (such as a standard removable mount or a proprietary system), available adjustment range, recommended tracking force, electrical requirements for the phono stage, and whether the cartridge body clears the record and headshell. A cartridge change normally requires alignment, tonearm balancing and tracking-force adjustment. If your turntable has a permanently fitted cartridge or limited adjustment, a replacement stylus may be the only practical part swap.
8. Replacement headshell
A headshell is the removable carrier that holds a cartridge on some tonearms. It can be replaced after damage or used to keep a second cartridge pre-mounted for quicker changes. Compatibility depends on the arm connector, mounting geometry, lead wires and acceptable cartridge mass.
The AT-LP3 manual lists the AT-HS3 headshell for that model. Treat this as a model-specific part number, not evidence that the headshell fits every detachable arm. When transferring a cartridge, protect the stylus, label the tiny signal wires, tighten screws evenly and realign the cartridge before playing records. A headshell that physically attaches can still place the cartridge at the wrong height or alignment.
9. Drive belt for belt-drive turntables
A belt is a wear item for belt-drive decks. Stretching, glazing, slipping during startup or an inability to reach stable speed are reasons to inspect it. Audio-Technica specifies an exclusive belt for the AT-LP3, illustrating why a generic-looking belt is not automatically correct.

Confirm the exact turntable model and approved belt part before ordering. Unplug the deck, remove the platter as the manual directs, fit the belt without twisting it, and reconnect the platter’s drive path. Do not get oil or cleaning fluid on the belt or pulley. If speed remains unstable after a correct belt replacement, the fault may be in the motor, pulley or control electronics rather than the belt.

Make adjustments in an order that prevents one change from invalidating another.
- Stabilize the support. Put the turntable on a rigid, low-vibration surface and level it as the manual recommends.
- Install mechanical parts. Fit a belt, cartridge or headshell with the power disconnected and the stylus protected.
- Balance the tonearm. Set the arm’s tracking-force counterweight to the neutral position specified by the manufacturer.
- Set tracking force and anti-skate. Use the cartridge specification, then verify force with a gauge if you have one.
- Clean before listening. Brush the record and, when needed, clean the stylus using the dry rear-to-tip method.
- Test carefully. Use a familiar record, listen for mistracking or channel imbalance, and stop if the stylus behaves abnormally.
How to choose what to buy first
For a functioning turntable with dusty records
Start with a record brush and a dry stylus brush. They address routine contamination without changing alignment or compatibility. Add a level if the deck has just been installed or moved.

Check the cartridge manual, balance the tonearm and use a tracking-force gauge. Do not respond to mistracking by guessing at a heavier force; inspect stylus condition, alignment and the record as well.
For a worn or damaged stylus
Buy the exact replacement part listed for the cartridge. Rebalance and reset tracking force after installation. If the cartridge body, cantilever mount or wiring is damaged, a complete cartridge or headshell assembly may be required.
For a collection of dirty used records
Consider a record-cleaning machine after establishing a safe manual-cleaning routine. It is a convenience and deeper-care purchase, not a prerequisite for playing vinyl.
Quick Recap
Common buying and maintenance mistakes
- Assuming all styli fit: confirm the cartridge and part number, not just the turntable’s brand.
- Using solvent on a stylus: follow the cartridge maker’s instructions; Ortofon specifically cautions against solvents.
- Brushing sideways: stylus brushes should move from the rear toward the tip unless your manual explicitly says otherwise.
- Treating a surface brush as deep cleaning: loose dust and embedded grime require different methods.
- Skipping re-setup after a part change: a new stylus, cartridge or headshell changes the balance and requires fresh tracking-force checks.
- Buying by appearance: a belt, headshell or cartridge can look similar while differing in dimensions, mass or electrical characteristics.
- Expecting guaranteed sound improvement: these accessories primarily protect records, maintain correct setup or restore worn parts; reliable cross-model listening-test evidence for optional sound-tuning accessories is not established here.
