An old security camera may still be useful, but its best second life depends on what the exact model can do and whether its software is still supported. Before setting it up again, check the manual and the manufacturer’s current support page for firmware updates, app availability, power needs, recording options, and supported network protocols. Then choose a use that fits its capabilities and location.
What to check before reusing an old security camera
Start with the camera’s model number and firmware version. Confirm that its manufacturer still provides security updates and that the viewing app works with your current phone or computer. - Confirm capabilities: Check whether the camera supports Wi-Fi or wired networking, live viewing, motion alerts, audio, local recording, and outdoor use. Do not assume it has any feature that is not listed for that exact model.
- Check its power and mounting: Make sure the location has the right outlet or power arrangement, and that the camera can be mounted safely with a useful view.
- Decide whether you need live viewing or recording: A camera may offer one without the other, and recording may depend on a compatible card, recorder, app, or subscription.
- Choose local or remote access deliberately: Remote viewing is convenient, but it creates privacy and account-security considerations. Avoid aiming a camera at private areas unless that view is necessary.
- Secure the network and account: Replace default or reused passwords with a unique, strong password. Turn on available encryption, firewall, and two-factor options. The NCSC warns that “Live feeds or images from smart cameras can (in rare cases) be accessed by unauthorised users, putting your privacy at risk.” Remote access should be enabled only if you need it and can secure the camera and account.

1. Check on pets
A working live view can let you check a pet’s room or resting area while you are elsewhere. Confirm that the app and camera still connect, and avoid placing it where household members expect privacy. The FTC lists pet monitoring as a common camera use. FTC camera security guidance

2. Use it for a nursery view
A camera may provide a view of a nursery, but it is not automatically a substitute for a dedicated baby monitor or safe-sleep practices. Check the device’s reliability and placement, and take extra care with who can access the feed. The FTC discusses baby monitors alongside security cameras and emphasizes privacy in sensitive areas. 3. Watch a porch or entry area
Point a camera at a doorway or delivery area if it can be mounted securely and gives a useful view. Keep the field of view focused on your property rather than unnecessarily capturing neighbours or public space. 4. Monitor a garage or workshop
A powered camera can provide a quick visual check of a garage, tool storage, or workbench. Treat it as a view, not as a sensor: do not rely on it for fire, hazard, or theft detection unless the exact model has a verified feature designed for that purpose.

5. Observe garden activity
A camera can show activity in a yard or garden when its weather rating, power supply, mounting, and network reach suit the location. An indoor camera is not necessarily weatherproof, so check the model’s specifications before placing it outside.
6. View a bird feeder or birdbath
A close-up view of a feeder or birdbath can make a camera useful for observing wildlife. Check that the lens can focus at the required distance and that you can safely mount and power the device. If it is outdoors, verify the camera’s rating and whether a suitable protective enclosure is supported.
7. Check a household task area
A camera aimed at a laundry, storage, or hobby area can help you take a quick look from elsewhere. Do not assume video alone can detect that an appliance has finished or recognize a particular event; that requires a feature the camera may not have.

8. Set up a temporary project view
For a short-lived household project or event, reposition the camera if its mount, power, and viewing method allow it. Keep the feed access limited, then remove temporary account or network access when the project ends. 9. Connect it to a compatible local recorder
Some IP cameras can send video to a local network recorder, but this is specific to the camera’s model, firmware, and protocols. Before buying or configuring a recorder, check the camera in the ONVIF conformant products database and confirm that the exact product and firmware/software version are listed. Also verify that the recorder supports the camera’s protocol, such as ONVIF or RTSP; a protocol name on a sales listing alone does not establish compatibility. Revere’s supported camera protocols

- Indoor or outdoor rating: Match the environment and mounting needs to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Power and network at the location: A camera is useful only where it can stay powered and maintain the required connection.
- Live view or recording: Confirm what the device supports and whether recording needs a storage card, recorder, app, or subscription.
- Local or remote access: Local viewing may reduce remote-access exposure; remote viewing can be useful but requires a secure account and careful privacy decisions.
- Protocol and storage compatibility: Verify exact support for the camera, firmware, recorder, and any memory card before spending money.

Check privacy and placement after installation
Keep the camera’s view limited to the area you intend to monitor. Avoid capturing private areas of your home or neighbouring property unnecessarily, and review the angle periodically because a shifted mount can change what the camera records.
