9 Kings separates four kinds of progression that are easy to confuse: the 33-year run, king unlocks, difficulty tiers, and Quest mode. A normal run starts with a 3-by-3 capital, four cards and three lives, reaches a final battle in year 33, and can continue in endless mode after a win. Difficulty tiers unlock globally for every king after a first completion at the current tier, while kings themselves unlock through separate milestones. Winning any single-player run opens Quest mode.
As of 2026-10-13 09:45:20 UTC, the Steam listing still labels 9 Kings as Early Access and gives November 12, 2026 as the planned version 1.0 release date. That date was still in the future at the stated timestamp, so check the live listing before making a purchase decision.
How long is a standard 9 Kings run?
A standard run covers 33 years. The run is not simply a timer: each year is a survival-and-building cycle that adds a battle, a card decision and any events before you prepare for the next year.
Your starting setup
- A 3-by-3 capital.
- Four cards: one base card and three cards associated with the king you selected.
- Three lives.
The selected king therefore affects your available card pool from the beginning, but it does not alter the run’s 33-year length.

What happens during each year?
- Fight the year’s battle. Every year brings a battle that must be survived to keep progressing.
- Choose a card. After a surviving battle, you normally choose one of three cards.
- Resolve events. Events can require decisions or other responses before the next year.
- Prepare the capital. Apply the consequences of your choices and get ready for the next battle.
- Repeat until year 33. The cycle continues through the final year.
What happens after year 33?
Winning the year-33 final battle completes the standard run. You may then continue in endless mode rather than ending the session immediately. Endless continuation is an extension of a completed run, not a longer requirement for unlocking the next basic difficulty.
Do king unlocks and difficulty unlocks work differently?
Yes. They are separate systems and completing one does not automatically satisfy the other.

How do you unlock additional kings?
Start with the King of Nothing
The King of Nothing is the only king available initially. Other kings are opened by reaching their specified milestones. Because progress toward a king carries across runs, an unsuccessful attempt can still contribute to a future unlock if it advances the relevant milestone.
Each king has a different card and perk identity
Every king comes with a distinct set of cards and perks. Selecting a newly unlocked king changes the cards available in the opening hand and the bonus path you can develop, but it does not reset the game’s global difficulty progression.

There is no universal “one win unlocks every king” rule
A completed run is important for difficulty progression and for Quest mode, but king unlocks depend on their own milestones. If a king remains locked after a win, check that king’s milestone rather than assuming the difficulty system failed.
How does king leveling and the perk system work?
Experience is based on years played
At the end of a run, a king gains experience based on the years you played. This award happens even when the run was unsuccessful, so losing before year 33 does not erase all king-level progress. The exact amount can depend on the years reached; the key rule is that an ended run awards experience rather than requiring a victory.
Perks are persistent, but adjustable
Leveling a king unlocks perks. Those perks function as persistent bonuses between runs and can be reset between runs, allowing you to change the setup for a new attempt instead of permanently committing to an early choice.
Why older perk lists can be misleading
The official wiki warns that some detailed perk information may not reflect the game after a perk overhaul. Treat the wiki’s progression outline as a guide to how leveling works, not as a guaranteed list of the exact perk effects in every build. For a precise effect, use the perk description shown in your installed version and note the game’s version when comparing advice from older posts.

What are the 9 Kings difficulty tiers?
Basic difficulty order
The basic difficulties are listed in this order:

| 3 | Knight | Complete a run at Squire for the first time with any king. |

| 5 | Baron | Complete a run at Lord for the first time with any king. |
| 6 | Count | Complete a run at Baron for the first time with any king. |
| 7 | Duke | Complete a run at Count for the first time with any king. |
| 8 | Prince | Complete a run at Duke for the first time with any king. |
| 9 | King | Complete a run at Prince for the first time with any king. |
The unlock unit is the completed run at the current tier, not the king used for that run. For example, a first successful Prince run with one king makes the next tier available to the other kings as well.
What changes when difficulty increases?
According to the official difficulty description, higher basic levels increase enemy power. They do not otherwise change the game’s gameplay elements. Your run still follows the same 33-year structure, card choices and event sequence rules; the pressure comes from stronger enemies.
What happens after King difficulty?
Completing King opens further numbered King tiers. The official page lists progression through King IX and later King IX tiers; its highest listed level is named King IX IX. The repeated numeral is part of the game’s tier naming, not a typo to silently normalize. Because high-tier labels and balance can change with updates, read the exact label displayed in your build when selecting an advanced level.

Why is Prince difficulty still locked?
Prince becomes available only after a first completion at Duke. Playing many attempts at Duke without completing the run does not satisfy the rule. Also check that the run was completed in the standard single-player mode and that the result registered after the year-33 battle. The unlock is global across kings, so switching kings is not required to make Prince appear once the qualifying Duke completion is recorded.

When does Quest mode unlock?
Quest mode unlocks after you win any single-player run at any difficulty. You do not need to finish a run on King, unlock every king or reach an advanced numbered tier first.
What is inside Quest mode?
Quest challenges reveal additional regions and challenges as you complete them. The wiki describes three Quest difficulty labels:
- Knight
- King
- Chaos
These labels belong to Quest mode. Do not assume that selecting Quest Knight is the same action as unlocking the global Knight difficulty for standard runs; the two systems have different entry conditions.

Is 9 Kings still in Early Access?
Status at the supplied date
At 2026-10-13 09:45:20 UTC, the Steam store page labeled 9 Kings as Early Access. The listing said the developer planned to leave Early Access and release version 1.0 on November 12, 2026. Since that date had not arrived at the stated timestamp, it was a plan rather than a confirmed completed release.

What does Early Access imply for progression information?
Early Access means mechanics can change. The perk overhaul warning on the official wiki is a concrete example: a previously published perk table may no longer match the installed build. Difficulty names, card effects, quest content and balance can likewise be revised, so use the in-game descriptions and current patch notes when an exact effect matters.
The developer, Sad Socket, explains on the Early Access page: “We love considering and implementing ideas from players, and we will use Early Access to both expand and improve the game.” That statement describes an intention to iterate, not a guarantee that every planned feature or date will remain unchanged.
A practical progression checklist
Use this order when you are trying to identify what to do next:

- Choose a king. Start with the King of Nothing or select any king you have unlocked.
- Play through the yearly loop. Survive battles, choose cards, resolve events and prepare for the next year.
- Track the year reached. A failed run can still award king experience based on years played.
- Finish year 33 when targeting a difficulty unlock. The next basic tier requires a completed run at the current tier.
- Check the global difficulty list. Once the first completion is recorded, the next tier should be available regardless of which king earned it.
- Check king milestones separately. A locked king requires its own milestone; a difficulty win does not substitute for it.
- Win one single-player run to open Quest mode. Any difficulty qualifies.
- Verify the build before relying on perk details. Use the perk text in your game if it conflicts with an older wiki entry.
What the available evidence does not establish
There is no supported average real-world run time, player-outcome statistic or sales figure to use as a planning benchmark. Run length is defined in years, while the actual time spent depends on how quickly you make decisions and handle events. Treat “33 years” as the game’s progression length, not a promise of a particular number of minutes.
