You can try a new tech hobby over a weekend without buying equipment: build a tiny program, experiment with virtual circuits, follow aircraft or satellites, or make something with music or video tools. Aim for one small result—not mastery. “Free” describes an entry point, not a promise that every tool or advanced feature will remain free.
Choose a hobby by what you want to do
Pick a direction before choosing a tool. If you like making things, start with coding, circuits, games, 3D modeling, music, or video. If you would rather observe and investigate, try aircraft, birds, or satellites. A phone is enough to begin bird identification; a computer is more useful for coding, modeling, and editing. Several activities can be explored with either a phone or a computer, depending on the tool you choose.
For a weekend trial, define a finish line you can reach in an hour or two: a working button, a short story, one identified bird, or a few seconds of edited video. Keeping the first project small makes it easier to learn whether you enjoy the process.

1. Vibe coding
Describe a simple utility to an AI coding tool—for example, a recipe organizer or an expense tracker—and see what it generates. Keep the request narrow: one screen and one or two functions are a better first project than a complete app. Try changing a label, adding a field, or fixing one behavior so you learn how the generated result responds to edits.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Model B with 1.5GHz 64-bit quad-core CPU (4GB RAM)
- Includes Pre-Loaded 32GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10), USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Premium High-Gloss Raspberry Pi 4 Case with Integrated Fan Mount, CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- CanaKit 3.5A USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 Power Supply (US Plug) with Noise Filter, Set of Heat Sinks, Display Cable - 6 foot (Supports up to 4K60p)
- CanaKit USB-C PiSwitch (On/Off Power Switch for Raspberry Pi 4)
Free access to AI tools may be limited. Read generated code and commands before running them, especially if they access files, accounts, or system settings. Treat the output as a draft to inspect, not as automatically safe or correct software.
2. Build electronics without hardware
An online circuit simulator lets you place virtual components such as an LED or button and test how they connect. Follow a simple example, then change one thing—such as the code controlling the LED—and observe the result. This is a way to explore basic circuit ideas without buying parts or soldering.
Simulation is a useful first step, but it is not the same as building a physical circuit. If you continue later, you can decide whether hands-on components are worth adding; they are not required for this weekend experiment.

3. Make a simple game
Start with a short branching story or one small arcade mechanic. A branching story might give the player two choices and a different outcome for each. An arcade project could focus on moving one character and avoiding one obstacle. Finish that core interaction before adding menus, levels, or elaborate graphics.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
The aim is to make a complete, playable fragment. A small finished game teaches more about how the parts fit together than an ambitious project left unfinished.
4. Try 3D modeling
Use a browser-based tool or free modeling software to combine basic shapes or cut a hole through an object. A simple first result might be a block with a circular opening or two shapes joined into one form. Save the model and rotate it to inspect how it looks from different angles.
A 3D printer is a possible later extension, not a prerequisite. Modeling alone is enough to learn how digital objects are assembled and changed.

5. Track aircraft
Open a flight-tracking website or app and look for an aircraft you can see overhead. Compare its position with what is displayed and explore the information the service provides. Aircraft-tracking displays draw on transponders and other sources, but they do not guarantee that every aircraft will appear.

- Includes Made in UK Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (B Plus) with 1.4 GHz 64-bit Quad-Core Processor, 1 GB RAM
- Dual Band 2.4GHz and 5GHz IEEE 802.11.b/g/n/ac Wireless LAN, Enhanced Ethernet Performance
- Includes 32 GB EVO+ Micro SD Card (Class 10) Pre-loaded with OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit 2.5A USB Power Supply with Micro USB Cable and Noise Filter - Specially designed for the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (UL Listed)
- Premium Raspberry Pi 3 B+ Case, Display Cable, 2 x Heat Sinks, GPIO Quick Reference Card, CanaKit Full Color Quick-Start Guide
Think of the activity as investigating available flight data, not identifying every plane in the sky. If nothing is overhead, browse the map and follow an aircraft already displayed.
6. Identify birds by sound and sight
Take a phone outdoors and listen for birds. Merlin Bird ID is a free option described for audio identification; you can use a recording or listen in the moment, then compare the app’s suggestion with what you hear and see. Bird identification is an estimate to check against the bird’s call, appearance, and surroundings, rather than a reason to ignore what is actually present.
Binoculars can help you see birds at a distance, but they are optional. A phone and a short outdoor walk are enough to try the hobby.
7. Track satellites and the ISS
Use a satellite-tracking website to find a predicted pass, then choose an outdoor spot with a clear view and look at the stated time. Visibility depends on timing and viewing conditions, so a prediction is not a guarantee of a sighting. A useful portion of a pass may last only a few minutes; plan to be outside before the listed time rather than expecting to search at leisure.

How-To Geek’s August 2026 article describes the ISS as traveling at around 17,500 mph. The figure is included here as that article’s reported figure, not as a fresh measurement.

8. Make music
Try a digital audio workstation (DAW) and assemble a short loop or song from its included sounds. Start with a beat or repeated phrase, add one more layer, and adjust the timing or volume. You do not need to read music or play an instrument to experiment with arranging sounds.
Check the current terms and included content of any particular tool before relying on it as entirely free. A free starting option does not establish that every feature, sound, or future use will also be free.

9. Edit a short video
Use clips already on your phone to make a brief edit: trim the beginning and end, arrange the clips, add a title or subtitles, and place music underneath. Keeping the project short helps you learn the basic editing sequence without getting bogged down in effects.

Advanced editing software can be complicated and may run slowly on some computers. If it feels overwhelming or performs poorly, begin with a simpler editor rather than treating advanced features as a requirement.
What to do after the weekend
If one activity holds your interest, continue with a focused learning resource rather than expanding the project too quickly. Cisco Networking Academy offers free self-paced courses, including beginner Python. The National Science Foundation’s computing education resources list Scratch and one-hour coding activities for students and families. Course catalogs and access terms can change, so check the provider’s current information before you begin.
For a later cybersecurity learning path—not one of the nine hobbies above—the NIST NICE resource page collects free and low-cost online materials. It is described as continually updated, so consult the page for its current selection.
