These nine accessories cover the most common college laptop needs: easier input, more desk space, better lighting, audio, charging and extra ports. Each was listed below $100 in PCWorld’s August 25, 2026 article; those are reported price snapshots, not guaranteed current prices or availability. None is essential for every student, so start with the limitation you actually run into.

Which accessories solve the biggest laptop problems?

For many students, a mouse and keyboard make long work sessions more comfortable, while a USB-C hub helps when a laptop lacks ports. The right pick depends on your desk setup, commute and exact laptop model—not on buying a complete kit.

Mouse: Logitech Signature M650 — reported at $40

PCWorld lists the Signature M650 at $40 retail and says it sometimes falls below $30 on sale. Its sculpted shape, smooth scrolling and thumb-side back/forward buttons may suit students who prefer a mouse to a trackpad. It supports Bluetooth and 2.4GHz wireless connections and uses an included AA battery; the article reports up to two years of battery life. Check the connection option you plan to use and whether the mouse’s size and shape suit your hand. PCWorld’s recommendation and price snapshot.

Keyboard: G.Skill KM250 — reported at $45

The KM250 has RGB lighting, a rotary volume dial, switches and keycaps, and built-in foam dampening, according to PCWorld. Dampening may soften some keyboard noise, but it does not make typing silent—an important distinction in a shared room or library. Confirm the keyboard’s connection and layout meet your needs before buying. PCWorld’s recommendation and price snapshot.

Desk mat: Corsair MM350 Pro — reported at $30

At 36 inches wide, this mat provides a broad surface for a mouse and other desk items. PCWorld describes it as waterproof and stain-resistant, with washable fabric. Measure your desk first: a large mat can be useful at a fixed study space but awkward to carry between classes. PCWorld’s recommendation and price snapshot.

When is an external display or lamp worth the desk space?

Monitor: Sceptre R1500 — reported at $99

PCWorld describes the R1500 as a 24-inch, 1080p monitor with a slight curve, an HDMI connection and an additional HDMI port. It can provide more screen area for working with documents side by side, but the article’s details do not establish every capability a student might need. Check the exact model’s inputs, resolution and included cables, and confirm your laptop can connect to it.

Headphones: Anker Soundcore Q20i — reported at $45

PCWorld lists active noise cancellation, a fold-flat design and USB-C charging among the Q20i’s features, and reports up to 60 hours of battery life. The fold-flat form may be easier to pack than full-size speakers, while headphones are the more practical option when you need private audio in shared spaces. Speakers make more sense at a personal desk when private listening is not required; headphones are better suited to shared or quiet spaces. Confirm the connection and desk space work for your setup. PCWorld’s recommendation and price snapshot.

What should you check before adding charging or ports?

Charger: Ugreen Nexode 65W — reported at $40

PCWorld describes this compact GaN charger as having folding prongs and supporting simultaneous charging for a laptop, phone and headphones. Its 65W rating alone does not guarantee it can charge every laptop at full speed, especially while other devices are connected. Check your laptop’s required wattage, supported USB-C charging standard and the charger’s power allocation across ports; also confirm the exact model’s specifications before relying on it for your devices. PCWorld’s recommendation and price snapshot.

USB-C hub: Anker 7-in-1 USB-C Hub — reported at $40

The hub is presented as a way to connect a monitor, keyboard, speakers, flash drive, SSD, and SD or microSD cards. A hub only helps if your laptop’s USB-C port supports the functions you need: USB-C connectors do not all provide the same data, display or power capabilities. Check the laptop’s port specifications and the exact hub’s ports and power limits, particularly if you want to connect a monitor or charge through the hub. How to choose without spending the whole budget

  1. Fix the daily friction first. If the trackpad slows you down, consider the mouse; if typing is the problem, consider the keyboard. A mat is mainly useful at a desk with enough room for it.
  2. Match the item to where you study. A monitor and lamp suit a regular desk. Fold-flat headphones are easier to carry than desktop speakers, while speakers can be more convenient at a private study space.
  3. Verify compatibility before buying. Check laptop ports and display support for the hub and monitor, and charging wattage and standards for the charger. Confirm dimensions, keyboard layout, connection type and mounting fit for the other accessories.
  4. Recheck the listing at checkout. The amounts above are PCWorld’s reported prices, not live quotes. Verify the exact model, current price, stock and return terms with the seller.

These are recommendations reported by PCWorld, not independent comparative test results. The article does not establish that every item will suit every student or laptop.
