1K, 4K and 8K describe how many times per second a mouse reports its position and button state to the computer: 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 reports respectively. Their nominal reporting intervals are 1 millisecond, 0.25 milliseconds and 0.125 milliseconds. A higher setting can make motion updates more frequent, but it does not guarantee a more accurate sensor, a competitive advantage or an equal reduction in total click-to-screen latency.

For most people, 1K remains the dependable low-overhead setting. A smooth, modern gaming system with a high-refresh monitor can be a reasonable candidate for 4K or 8K if the mouse, receiver, firmware, operating system and game all support it. The practical choice is the highest rate that does not introduce stutter, compatibility problems, excessive CPU load or unacceptable wireless battery drain.

What mouse polling rate actually measures

Polling rate is the frequency at which a mouse sends data to the computer. It is expressed in hertz (Hz), where one hertz means one report per second. In mouse specifications, “1K” means 1,000 Hz, “4K” means 4,000 Hz and “8K” means 8,000 Hz.

The report contains current input information such as sensor position and button state. A faster rate gives the computer more frequent samples of that information. It does not change the mouse’s optical sensor resolution, physical tracking accuracy, switch quality, shape, weight or maximum speed.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Polling is also only one stage in the input path. After a report reaches the computer, the operating system, game engine, frame-generation or rendering schedule, monitor refresh and display response still affect when a movement or click appears on screen. Therefore, the polling interval must not be described as the total click-to-photon latency.

1K vs. 4K vs. 8K at a glance

Setting Reports per second Nominal interval Practical interpretation
1K (1,000 Hz) 1,000 1 ms Common baseline with the lowest reporting workload of these three choices.
4K (4,000 Hz) 4,000 0.25 ms Four times as many updates as 1K; usefulness depends on the mouse, computer, display and game.
8K (8,000 Hz) 8,000 0.125 ms Most frequent updates here, but the interval saving over 4K is small and the workload is highest.

These intervals come from the reciprocal of the frequency: 1 divided by 1,000 seconds is 0.001 seconds, or 1 ms; 1 divided by 4,000 is 0.00025 seconds, or 0.25 ms; and 1 divided by 8,000 is 0.000125 seconds, or 0.125 ms. SteelSeries explains the 1,000- and 4,000-report figures, while Tom’s Hardware lists the corresponding 1K, 4K and 8K intervals.

What changes when you raise the rate

The interval improvement is not linear in practical value

Changing from 1K to 4K removes 0.75 ms from the nominal maximum gap between reports. Changing from 4K to 8K removes only another 0.125 ms. The frequency doubles between 4K and 8K, but the absolute interval reduction is much smaller than the 1K-to-4K change.

That arithmetic describes report timing, not a guaranteed end-to-end improvement. A game that samples input at its own cadence, a busy CPU, inconsistent frame times or a monitor with a slower refresh can limit what the additional reports contribute.

Movement may look smoother in suitable conditions

When the game and display can make use of frequent input updates, a higher rate can reduce the time between successive mouse samples. This may make fast camera movements or small adjustments appear more continuous, particularly on high-refresh displays. The effect is conditional: it depends on the complete system and on whether the user can perceive or use the difference.

It does not make the sensor inherently more accurate

Polling rate changes how often the computer receives data; it does not improve the sensor’s underlying tracking precision. It cannot correct a poor sensor, an unsuitable surface, hand movement or an incorrect sensitivity setting. Claims that 8K automatically makes a mouse more accurate or guarantees better competitive results go beyond the established evidence.

Trade-offs of 4K and 8K

CPU workload

Every report must be processed. Corsair’s support guidance, updated September 4, 2025, states that higher polling rates carry a higher CPU-usage cost and that mouse movement can have more impact because of the larger volume of sensor data. The size of that impact varies with the processor, operating system, game and other work running at the same time.

A system that is already close to its CPU limit can show worse frame pacing, lower minimum frame rates or occasional hitching after the rate is raised. If a game feels less consistent at 4K or 8K, returning to 1K is a valid fix; the higher setting is not automatically the better setting.

Game and operating-system compatibility

High-rate support is not universal. Corsair notes that some devices default to 1K for compatibility. ASUS advises keeping firmware and Windows current and selecting 2K, 4K or 8K according to the system’s capabilities. ASUS also warns that older games may not support higher polling rates correctly.

Symptoms of a compatibility problem can include a setting that refuses to remain enabled, erratic cursor behavior, stutter, unusually high CPU use or no observable change. Test the setting in the actual games and applications you use rather than relying only on a control-panel value.

USB connection stability

Corsair recommends connecting a high-rate mouse or receiver to a USB port on the motherboard for stability. Avoid judging a polling mode through an unreliable hub, a long extension or a port that is already overloaded with other high-bandwidth devices. Wireless receivers may have their own placement and connection requirements, so follow the mouse maker’s instructions for the specific model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless battery life

Higher wireless rates generally require more frequent radio activity, but the battery penalty is product-specific. Tom’s Hardware documented substantial runtime reductions between 1K and 8K for the particular mice it examined. Those figures are examples from those models, not a universal percentage that applies to every wireless mouse.

Check the manufacturer’s runtime for the exact mode you plan to use. A mouse advertised for long battery life at 1K may last much less at 4K or 8K. You can also use 1K for ordinary work or long sessions and reserve a higher rate for situations in which you value the extra updates.

How much computer is needed?

There is no industry-wide minimum processor specification for 4K or 8K polling. Hardware recommendations published by a manufacturer are guidance, not a formal compatibility standard.

Polling mode Published processor guidance How to interpret it
4K Corsair suggests an Intel Core i5 9th generation, AMD Ryzen 5 2nd generation or equivalent. A vendor recommendation for a starting level, not a guarantee that every game will behave identically.
8K Corsair suggests an Intel Core i7 9th generation, AMD Ryzen 7 2nd generation or equivalent. A stronger vendor recommendation because processing demand can be higher; actual results still depend on the full system.

CPU model alone does not decide the result. Background applications, USB drivers, game engine behavior, frame rate, graphics settings and whether the mouse is wired or wireless can all matter. A recent processor with poor frame pacing may feel worse at 8K than an older, well-tuned system at 4K or 1K.

Which rate should you use?

Choose 1K when reliability and battery life come first

  • You want the lowest reporting overhead of the three settings.
  • Your games are older or do not document high-rate support.
  • You use a wireless mouse and prefer longer intervals between charges.
  • You notice stutter, frame-time spikes, extra CPU load or unstable behavior at higher settings.
  • Your display or typical frame rate makes the extra samples difficult to use.

Try 4K when your system is comfortably ahead of its workload

4K is a practical experiment for a modern gaming PC that already runs its target games smoothly, especially with a high-refresh monitor. It offers a 0.25 ms nominal interval and a larger interval reduction from 1K than the move from 4K to 8K. Keep it only if frame pacing, compatibility and battery life remain acceptable.

Use 8K only when the complete setup supports it

8K is most defensible when the mouse and receiver explicitly support it, firmware and Windows are current, the connection is stable, the game behaves correctly and the computer has spare CPU capacity. It may provide more frequent updates in suitable high-refresh situations, but the nominal 0.125 ms interval does not establish a universal perceptible or performance benefit.

How to change polling rate safely

  1. Confirm the supported modes. Read the exact mouse and receiver specifications. Check whether 4K or 8K works in wired mode, wireless mode or only with an optional receiver or booster.
  2. Update the software stack. Install the current mouse firmware, receiver firmware, configuration utility and Windows updates recommended by the manufacturer. ASUS describes configuring 2K, 4K or 8K through Armoury Crate for compatible devices; other brands use different utilities and labels.
  3. Use a stable USB connection. Connect a wired mouse or wireless receiver directly to a motherboard USB port when the manufacturer recommends that arrangement. Do not begin testing through an unreliable hub.
  4. Start at 1K. Record how the cursor and your main games feel, and note frame-time consistency and wireless battery status. This gives you a baseline for comparison.
  5. Select 4K, then test. Change the rate in the mouse utility, apply the setting and move the pointer on the desktop before launching a game. Play a repeatable section of a demanding title and watch for stutter, input anomalies or unusual CPU use.
  6. Test 8K only after 4K is stable. Apply the same checks in wired and wireless modes you actually use. A setting shown in the utility is not proof that every game or connection path supports it.
  7. Keep the lowest rate that meets your needs. If battery runtime, frame pacing, compatibility or stability worsens, select 4K or 1K. High polling is adjustable; there is no need to keep 8K enabled everywhere.

How to compare two mice beyond the headline number

Polling rate is only one specification. Use the following checklist when two products both advertise 4K or 8K:

  • Mode availability: verify the maximum rate separately for wired, 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth. Bluetooth commonly has different limits than a dedicated receiver.
  • Receiver requirements: determine whether high-rate operation needs an included receiver, a separate accessory or a particular firmware version.
  • Runtime at the chosen rate: compare the manufacturer’s battery estimate for 1K, 4K and 8K rather than quoting the longest figure without its mode.
  • Connection stability: check receiver placement, USB recommendations and whether the setting falls back to 1K when the connection or host cannot sustain it.
  • Software and game support: confirm that the configuration utility recognizes the device and that your important games tolerate the selected rate.
  • Display and frame rate: a high-refresh monitor and consistent frame times make frequent updates more relevant than a low-refresh, heavily frame-limited setup.
  • Core mouse qualities: evaluate shape, weight, controls, sensor behavior, click feel and price separately. A comfortable, dependable 1K mouse can be a better choice than an uncomfortable 8K model.

Worked examples

Competitive player with a stable high-refresh system

Suppose a player has a high-refresh monitor, a game that remains smooth at its target frame rate and a mouse with documented 4K and 8K support. The sensible process is to establish a 1K baseline, test 4K in a repeatable match or training area, then test 8K while monitoring frame pacing and CPU use. If 8K introduces hitching or drains the battery too quickly, 4K or 1K is the correct practical choice even though 8K is the larger specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless user who travels or works away from a charger

For this user, 1K may be preferable because the lower report frequency reduces radio activity and is easier to sustain for long periods. A higher mode can be enabled temporarily when needed, but the advertised maximum rate should not be confused with the longest battery-life claim.

Older PC or older game library

Start at 1K and update the mouse firmware and operating system before experimenting. If an older title behaves unpredictably at 4K or 8K, leave the rate at 1K for that title. ASUS specifically notes that older games may not support high polling rates, and Corsair notes that some devices use 1K as a compatibility default.

Reading a real product specification

As an example of how to interpret a listing, MSI’s 2026 VERSA 300 WIRELESS 8K datasheet states support for 8,000 Hz and a 0.125 ms interval, along with USB, Bluetooth 5.3 and 2.4 GHz wireless connections. It also claims up to 196 hours of battery life. The 196-hour figure is the manufacturer’s stated maximum, and the datasheet says specifications may change; it should not be treated as an 8K runtime unless the document explicitly assigns it to that mode.

When a listing presents one polling number beside several connection types, look for the detailed mode table. Maximum rate, battery duration and required accessories can differ between wired USB, 2.4 GHz wireless and Bluetooth.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Equating Hz with total latency: the interval is only the mouse-reporting portion of the input chain.
  • Assuming higher means more accurate: polling frequency does not change sensor precision or physical control.
  • Quoting a processor recommendation as a requirement: Corsair’s 4K and 8K CPU levels are vendor guidance, not a universal minimum.
  • Using a model-specific battery result as a general rule: wireless designs, batteries and firmware differ.
  • Testing only on the desktop: a setting that works in a utility may still cause problems in a particular game.
  • Ignoring the fallback mode: some hardware returns to 1K when high-rate operation is unavailable or incompatible.
  • Changing several variables at once: keep sensitivity, game settings and connection type constant while comparing rates.

Bottom line for choosing 1K, 4K or 8K

1K is the sensible default for low overhead, broad compatibility and predictable wireless endurance. 4K is the most useful upgrade to test when a capable system and high-refresh display already run smoothly. 8K supplies the most frequent reports but saves only 0.125 ms over 4K at the nominal report interval, so its value is highly dependent on the game, display, CPU, connection and user. Treat polling rate as an adjustable system setting, not as a standalone measure of mouse quality or guaranteed latency.
