Yes, some games remain playable with 8GB of system RAM, but that does not make 8GB a dependable gaming configuration. In TechSpot’s January 2026 comparison, several titles ran acceptably at that capacity, while others stuttered, delivered erratic frame times, or quietly reduced texture quality. The outcome depended on the game and test conditions—not a universal RAM threshold.
What the 8GB test does—and doesn’t—show
TechSpot’s Steven Walton compared 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB of system memory on a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with a GeForce RTX 5090. The test used a three-year-old Windows 11 installation, with Chrome (six tabs), Discord, and monitoring tools open. Windows was limited to address different amounts of the same 64GB memory kit, keeping its frequency, timings, and ranks consistent. Games were tested at 4K, typically at maximum quality settings. TechSpot’s full test and results describe this controlled comparison.
That setup helps isolate the effect of capacity, but it is not a prediction for every PC. A different graphics card, resolution, game patch, settings profile, operating system, or background workload can change the result. The useful takeaway is that 8GB is not a universal pass/fail line: a game can maintain reasonable average FPS yet still stutter or lower visual quality.

Which games were playable at 8GB?
These findings come from TechSpot’s specific 2026 test. “Playable” does not necessarily mean smooth: frame-time consistency and image quality matter alongside average frame rate.

Which games struggled or hid the cost?

The contrast explains why a single FPS number is not enough to judge a memory limit. Frame-time spikes can make motion feel uneven even when the average looks acceptable; reduced texture quality can make performance figures look better than the image actually is.
System RAM and graphics-card VRAM are different
System RAM is the memory used by Windows and applications; VRAM is the graphics card’s dedicated video memory. They are not interchangeable pools with identical performance. When a GPU runs short of VRAM, some assets may be pushed into system memory, increasing pressure on RAM. If system memory is also exhausted, data may need to move to local storage, which can carry a substantial performance cost. The 2026 comparison illustrates the interaction in its own test conditions. With an 8GB Radeon RX 9060 XT, assets normally held in video memory were pushed into system memory, and DRAM read bandwidth rose by roughly 70% in the tested setup. Combining that 8GB GPU with only 8GB of system RAM made the tested Marvel Rivals experience unworkable.

They show why “8GB RAM” must be clarified: 8GB of system memory and 8GB of VRAM are separate constraints, and either can affect the other.

Is 8GB enough for your gaming PC?
It may be sufficient for a particular game under particular conditions, but the 2026 results do not support treating it as a reliable target for current gaming. Decide based on the games and settings you actually use, and check for symptoms rather than relying on average FPS alone:
- Frame pacing: Look for uneven motion or recurring stutters, and consider 1% lows as well as average FPS.
- Image quality: Check whether the game has lowered texture quality or substituted lower-resolution assets.
- Other memory demands: Account for VRAM capacity, resolution, graphics settings, and background applications.
- Your specific configuration: Results vary by game, patch, hardware, and workload; one benchmark cannot guarantee performance on another PC.
For its tested games, TechSpot described 16GB as viable for budget-focused gaming and 32GB as the general gaming sweet spot. Walton’s conclusion was, “32GB is the sweet spot for gamers.” That is the recommendation based on TechSpot’s testing, not a claim that every game requires 32GB or that 16GB cannot be adequate.

Before upgrading memory
If you decide to move beyond 8GB, check the machine’s memory generation, form factor, supported maximum capacity, and available slots before buying a kit. A benchmark cannot establish what a particular desktop or laptop supports. Also consider whether your system can use a compatible matched kit and whether upgrading requires replacing existing modules; the correct choice depends on its hardware.
