The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller is the Ultimate 2 model to consider for Switch 2: 8BitDo lists compatibility when the console is running system version 20.1.1 or later. Its published feature list includes TMR sticks, motion control, extra shoulder bumpers, back paddles, and configurable controls. Those specifications make it a promising option, but they do not prove it is the best Switch 2 controller: there is no comparative testing here to support that ranking.
Which Ultimate 2 works with Switch 2?
Look for the exact name Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller. 8BitDo lists Switch 2 support for this model, subject to the console running system version 20.1.1 or above. The compatibility condition is specific to the product and can change as firmware and support information are updated; check 8BitDo’s product page and firmware index before buying or troubleshooting.
The names are easy to mix up, but the similarly named Ultimate 2 Wireless and Ultimate 2.4G are separate products. Their official compatibility lists do not establish Switch 2 support. The older Ultimate Bluetooth Controller with Charging Dock is another distinct model, and its compatibility should not be treated as evidence about the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth.
| Model | Officially listed platform support relevant here | What that means for a Switch 2 buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller | Switch 2 support is listed for system version 20.1.1 or above. 8BitDo product page | The model addressed in this article. Confirm the exact SKU and current support notes. |
| Ultimate 2 Wireless | Its product page lists Windows, Android, SteamOS, and Apple platforms, not Switch. 8BitDo product page | Do not assume the “Wireless” version has the Bluetooth model’s Switch 2 compatibility. |
| Ultimate 2.4G | Its product page lists Windows, Android, Raspberry Pi, SteamOS, and Apple devices, not Switch. 8BitDo product page | Not a drop-in substitute for the Switch 2-compatible model; its FAQ also lists Switch functions it lacks. |
| Ultimate Bluetooth Controller with Charging Dock | A separate product page lists Switch 2 compatibility. 8BitDo product page | It is a different controller, so verify its own features and package rather than applying the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth specifications to it. |
What does the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth offer?
8BitDo’s specifications for the NES40th Edition list TMR sticks, Hall Effect triggers, motion control, vibration, turbo, trigger-mode switching, two back paddles, and additional R4/L4 bumpers. It also lists Bluetooth, 2.4G, and wired USB connection modes for Switch. These are manufacturer-published features, not independent measurements of accuracy, durability, latency, or feel.
#1 Best Overall
- TMR Joysticks - Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability.
- 8BitDo Exclusive Wireless Technology - “8Speed”, it delivers an exceptionally stable 2.4G connection with ultra-low latency under 1ms. Engineered for rock-solid reliability, it features strong anti-interference and a 10m range with virtually no lag.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection). Customizable 6-Axis Motion Control. Turbo function. Rumble vibration. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- 2 Pro back paddle buttons, extra R4/L4 bumpers, and tactile bumpers & D-pad for enhanced control and faster response. Includes a multifunctional charging dock and USB-C adapter for seamless connectivity.
The named features are documented on the NES40th Edition page. Check the exact retail package you intend to buy: edition and SKU details matter, and a feature listed for that edition should not automatically be assumed for every Ultimate 2 Bluetooth colorway or bundle.
Controls and sensors
TMR sticks and Hall Effect triggers are the headline hardware distinctions in the published specification. The controller also has two rear paddles and extra shoulder bumpers, providing more assignable physical inputs than a basic two-stick layout. Motion control and vibration are listed as supported features, but the available specifications do not establish how those functions compare with another controller in play.
Rank #2
- Flagship, fully upgraded for next-level performance. Compatible with Switch, Switch 2, and Windows. Switch 2 compatibility requires the controller and adapter to be updated to the latest firmware.
- TMR Joysticks – Offering higher sensitivity, greater precision, and enhanced durability, complete with an RGB Fire Ring and wear-resistant joystick rings.
- Integrated Charging Dock - A seamlessly integrated charging dock keeps your controller always charged and ready to play. Automatically reconnects when removed from the dock.
- Vibration and Motion control (for Switch only). Turbo function. Wake-on-shake. Support 8BitDo Ultimate Software V2.
- Trigger Mode Switch - Easily switch between linear Hall Effect triggers and non-linear tactile triggers for optimal control across different gaming scenarios.
Connections and included items
The NES40th Edition product page lists Bluetooth, 2.4G, and wired USB for Switch. Its listed package includes the controller, dock, adapter, cable, manual, and edition-specific additions. Treat that as the contents for the named edition only; verify the box contents for the exact SKU and retailer listing rather than assuming every package includes the same accessories.
How customization works
The manual directs users to Ultimate Software V2 for customization and additional support. 8BitDo’s software support materials describe button mapping, stick and trigger sensitivity, vibration settings, macros, and profiles. Which functions are available depends on the platform and connection mode, so the software feature list should not be read as a guarantee that every setting can be changed while connected to Switch 2.
Rank #3

The manual also documents connecting the controller to a Switch device over USB. For the current compatibility condition and firmware notes, consult the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth manual and the official firmware index. If a feature is missing, first confirm the product name, console system version, controller firmware, and connection mode; then check the software and support guidance for that specific setup.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it the best Switch 2 controller?
The available official specifications support calling the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth a feature-rich Switch 2-compatible option, not declaring it the best. A defensible “best” verdict would require a current comparison that tests other compatible controllers under stated conditions, including comfort, controls, connection reliability, battery behavior, and price. Manufacturer feature lists alone cannot settle those trade-offs.

It is a plausible shortlist choice if you specifically want the listed back paddles, extra shoulder bumpers, motion control, multiple connection modes, and software customization. Before choosing it over another controller, compare the exact models on Switch 2 compatibility, the controls and sensors you will actually use, supported connection modes, software behavior on console, package contents, and current price. The cited product information does not establish current retail pricing or availability.
