Short answer: The 8BitDo Retro 108 N Edition is the choice for an NES-inspired, full-size keyboard with dedicated Super Buttons and support for a separately sold Super Stick. A compact board such as Lofree Block 98 saves desk space and officially covers more operating systems, while Keychron Q1 Pro is the better direction when switch and firmware customization matter more than retro styling.
Clarifying the “joystick” in the 8BitDo comparison
The 8BitDo Retro 108 is a keyboard, not a keyboard-and-joystick bundle. The official product page lists the keyboard’s included Dual Super Buttons and identifies the Super Stick and Super ABXY as compatible extensions sold separately. Therefore, “joystick” in this comparison means the optional Super Stick accessory, not a joystick that should be expected in the Retro 108 box.
That distinction affects both value and setup. The keyboard supplies a pair of programmable-looking, oversized controls for desktop use, while the Super Stick is an additional accessory for buyers who specifically want an arcade-style stick. Confirm the accessory’s current availability and connection details at the time of purchase; the cited product page establishes compatibility, not a permanent stock promise.

What the Retro 108 N Edition actually is
The Retro 108 is 8BitDo’s 108-key, full-size version of its retro mechanical keyboard family. The N Edition draws on the Nintendo Entertainment System’s visual language; a Fami Edition is also listed for the family. 8BitDo also makes an 87-key layout, so a product photo or listing that says “Retro Mechanical Keyboard” without “108” may describe a different, tenkeyless model. The independent RTINGS review likewise discusses NES and Famicom-inspired design and warns that variants should be distinguished.

| Specification | Retro 108 N Edition | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Layout | 108 keys (8BitDo product specification, retrieved 2026) | Conventional full-size footprint with a number pad; it occupies more desk width than compact alternatives. |
| Switches | Kailh Box White Switches V2 | These are clicky switches, so expect a distinct actuation sound and tactile feedback rather than a quiet linear feel. |
| Switch replacement | Hot-swappable PCB | Compatible replacement switches can be changed without soldering, subject to switch and socket compatibility. |
| Keycaps and plate | Dye-sublimation PBT keycaps; aluminum plate | PBT is the supplied keycap material, while the aluminum plate supports the switch assembly. |
| Construction | Top-mount | The mounting approach is part of the board’s typing design; it is not the same as a gasket-mounted custom board. |
| Controls | Volume knob, programmable controls and Dual Super Buttons | Physical controls are available without giving up the full-size layout. |
| Rollover | N-key rollover | The keyboard is specified to register multiple simultaneous key presses. |
| Connections | Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz wireless and wired USB | You can use a cable at a desk, a low-latency wireless adapter, or Bluetooth where that mode is suitable. |
| Battery | 2,000 mAh rechargeable battery; up to 200 use hours after a four-hour charge (manufacturer-stated) | The figures come from 8BitDo’s specification, not an independent battery test. Actual runtime varies with connection mode and use. |
| Officially listed compatibility | Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Android 9.0 or later | These are the operating systems named by 8BitDo. The cited page does not officially confirm macOS support. |
What is in the box, and what is not
According to 8BitDo’s product documentation, the package contains:
- The Retro 108 keyboard.
- One Dual Super Buttons set.
- A cable.
- A 2.4 GHz wireless adapter.
- A manual.
- Stickers.
The Super Stick and Super ABXY are named as compatible extensions, but they are not listed among those standard box contents. Treat any retailer listing that bundles one as a separate seller-specific package and verify exactly which edition and accessories are included.
The Dual Super Buttons are the practical reason to choose the 108 over a conventional retro-styled board: they provide large, separate controls that can be assigned for shortcuts or game inputs. The documentation establishes that the board has programmable controls, but it does not establish a universal default mapping for every operating system or application. Use the supplied manual and current 8BitDo configuration software instructions for the assignments you need.
Typing feel and everyday use
Clicky typing from Kailh Box White V2 switches
Kailh Box White Switches V2 make the Retro 108 a click-oriented keyboard. The click gives audible confirmation at actuation, which can be satisfying for deliberate typing and gaming inputs but distracting in a shared office, recording space or late-night room. The board is not presented as a silent or linear model, so do not buy it expecting the muted press of a linear switch.
Because the PCB is hot-swappable, the supplied feel is not permanent. A buyer willing to source compatible replacement switches can change the character later without desoldering every switch. Hot-swap support does not mean every switch on the market is guaranteed to fit: check the socket type, pin arrangement and physical clearance before ordering replacements.

Full-size convenience versus desk space
With 108 keys, the Retro 108 retains a number pad and the navigation cluster that many spreadsheet, finance and productivity users rely on. The trade-off is width. A mouse has less lateral room beside a full-size board, and the keyboard is harder to carry than a compact 75% or 98-key model. Measure the usable width of your desk, including mouse clearance, before treating the 108 as a drop-in replacement.
Build and control details
The dye-sublimation PBT caps, aluminum plate and top-mount construction are listed specifications rather than an independent durability certification. The volume knob gives a fast physical adjustment, while N-key rollover is useful when several keys must register together. These features make the board more than a decorative NES replica, but they do not eliminate the footprint and noise associated with a full-size clicky design.

Windows and Android
Windows 10 version 1903 or later and Android 9.0 or later are the official compatibility targets on 8BitDo’s page. On a Windows desktop, the 2.4 GHz adapter is the most direct wireless route when you want the included receiver, while wired USB avoids wireless pairing and charging concerns. Bluetooth is useful for devices that support it, but the page’s operating-system statement should remain the authority for supported combinations.
On Android 9.0 or later, Bluetooth is the likely practical option for a phone or tablet, provided the device accepts a physical keyboard. The 2.4 GHz receiver may require an appropriate USB host adapter, and Android behavior can vary by device.
What the cited documentation does not confirm
Do not market the Retro 108 as officially Mac-compatible on the strength of Bluetooth alone. The cited 8BitDo page names Windows 10 (1903+) and Android 9.0+, but does not list macOS. A Mac may detect some generic Bluetooth or USB keyboards, yet that possibility is not the same as an official compatibility claim, guaranteed support for programmable controls or validated software support.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

If macOS, iPadOS or iOS is a requirement, choose a model whose manufacturer explicitly lists those systems rather than assuming that a wireless standard guarantees every feature.

How the Retro 108 compares with the main alternatives
Lofree Block 98: smaller layout and broader stated OS support
Lofree Block 98 keeps a number pad in a 98-key layout while reducing the space used by a conventional full-size arrangement. It uses linear hot-swappable switches instead of the Retro 108’s clicky Kailh Box White V2 switches, and it has white LED backlighting. Its connection choices are Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4 GHz and wired USB-C.
Lofree’s official compatibility list includes Windows, Android, macOS, iPadOS and iOS. That broader stated range is the clearest reason to select it over the 8BitDo when Apple devices are central to your workflow. The trade-off is that Block 98 does not give you the NES-inspired enclosure or the included Dual Super Buttons described for the Retro 108.
Keychron Q1 Pro: customization first
Keychron Q1 Pro is positioned by its manufacturer as a customizable wireless mechanical keyboard. The official page lists support for common three-pin and five-pin MX-style switches, making it a useful comparison for people who want to choose their own switch type rather than start with a fixed retro aesthetic.
Q1 Pro is not presented by the cited source as an NES-styled board, and its appeal is the customization ecosystem rather than bundled arcade controls. Select it when switch experimentation, remapping and a smaller custom-keyboard format outweigh the 8BitDo’s visual theme and full-size number pad. Check the current product page for the exact layout, keycap set and regional configuration before ordering, because those details can change by edition.

Which keyboard fits each type of buyer?
Choose the Retro 108 when the theme and full-size controls are the point
- You specifically want an NES-inspired N Edition rather than a neutral custom keyboard.
- You use a number pad and accept a full-size footprint.
- You want clicky feedback from the supplied Kailh Box White V2 switches.
- The included Dual Super Buttons are useful, and you may later add the separately sold Super Stick or Super ABXY.
- Windows 10 (1903+) or Android 9.0+ covers your officially supported devices.
Choose Lofree Block 98 when space and Apple-device support matter
- You want a number pad in a layout smaller than 108 keys.
- You prefer linear switches and still want hot-swap capability.
- You need the manufacturer’s stated support for macOS, iPadOS or iOS in addition to Windows and Android.
- USB-C is preferable for your wired setup.
Choose Keychron Q1 Pro when customization outranks the retro shell
- You want to select among compatible three-pin and five-pin MX switches.
- You expect to remap or tune a custom mechanical keyboard rather than use bundled arcade-style controls.
- An NES or Famicom appearance is optional, not a purchase requirement.
Buying, price and availability
The 8BitDo Official Shop listing showed both N and Fami editions at $119.99 USD and marked the product sold out when retrieved in 2026. That figure is a dated US listing snapshot, not a guaranteed current price, regional price or inventory forecast. Taxes, shipping and retailer pricing can change the amount you actually pay.
Before purchasing, verify four details on the live listing:
- It says “Retro 108,” not the 87-key version or an older tenkeyless listing.
- The color and edition are the one you intend to buy: N or Fami.
- The package includes the Dual Super Buttons set and the 2.4 GHz adapter.
- Any Super Stick or Super ABXY shown in photographs is explicitly listed as included; otherwise budget for it as a separate accessory.
First-time setup checklist
Wired USB
- Connect the supplied cable to the keyboard and your computer or compatible host.
- Turn the keyboard on and allow the operating system to identify it as a keyboard.
- Test ordinary typing, the number pad, the volume knob and both Dual Super Buttons before changing assignments.
2.4 GHz wireless
- Insert the supplied 2.4 GHz adapter into a compatible USB port or host adapter.
- Switch the keyboard to its 2.4 GHz mode according to the manual.
- Type in a text field and test the controls before moving the adapter behind a crowded USB hub or monitor.
- Charge the battery if the connection drops or the status indication shows low power; the four-hour charge and 200-hour use figures are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees for every setup.
Bluetooth
- Put the keyboard into Bluetooth pairing mode using the controls described in the manual.
- Open the host device’s Bluetooth settings and select the keyboard.
- Complete the pairing prompt, then test modifier keys, the number pad and the Dual Super Buttons on that operating system.
Keep the manual available when assigning programmable controls. A key that works as a normal keyboard input may require separate software or a different mapping for an application or game, and the cited specifications do not promise identical behavior across Windows and Android.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Expecting a joystick in the standard package
The box contents name the keyboard and one Dual Super Buttons set, not the Super Stick. If a listing advertises a joystick, read whether it is a retailer bundle. If it is absent, the keyboard itself has not been short-shipped based on the documented package.

“Retro Mechanical Keyboard” can refer to the 87-key family member as well as the 108-key model. Check the number of keys and the product name before checkout. The N Edition is the NES-inspired colorway; the Fami Edition is a separate appearance.
Best Value

Assuming macOS support
8BitDo’s cited compatibility statement covers Windows 10 (1903+) and Android 9.0+. It does not officially list macOS. If a Mac is your primary computer, use the Lofree model’s explicit macOS listing or obtain direct confirmation for the exact 8BitDo firmware and software combination before relying on it.
Confusing hot-swap with unlimited switch choice
Hot-swap means switches can be replaced without soldering; it does not guarantee compatibility with every electrical, pin or physical format. Confirm the replacement switch specification and avoid forcing a switch into a socket that does not match.
Interpreting battery figures as a test result
“Up to 200 use hours” and a four-hour charge are manufacturer-stated specifications. Wireless mode, lighting, polling behavior and usage patterns affect runtime, so treat the figures as an upper-bound estimate rather than a promise of identical daily endurance.
Recommended Free Tools
Using a clicky board in a noise-sensitive room
The Kailh Box White V2 specification identifies a clicky switch. If quiet operation is essential, the Lofree Block 98’s linear switches are the more appropriate starting point, or select a compatible quiet switch for a hot-swap board after checking fit and electrical compatibility.
Bottom-line buying decision
Buy the 8BitDo Retro 108 N Edition for the complete NES-inspired presentation: a 108-key board, clicky switches, physical volume control and included Dual Super Buttons, with the option to add the Super Stick separately. Pick Lofree Block 98 if a reduced 98-key footprint, linear feel and officially listed Apple-platform support solve a more important problem. Pick Keychron Q1 Pro if your priority is choosing compatible MX-style switches and building a customizable keyboard rather than buying a themed bundle.
