An “802.11n WLAN driver” is software that lets your operating system use a compatible wireless network adapter. It is not one universal download: the right driver depends on the adapter model and the operating system. Start by identifying both, then look for a compatible package from your computer or adapter manufacturer.
What an 802.11n WLAN driver does
The wireless adapter is the hardware that connects a computer to Wi-Fi; the driver is the software interface through which the operating system communicates with that hardware. 802.11n is one of the wireless networking technologies Windows supports, not the name of a driver shared by every computer. Microsoft’s overview of wireless networking in Windows explains the network setup context.
Because driver packages are tied to particular hardware and supported operating systems, a generic search for “802.11n WLAN driver” can lead to the wrong package. Microsoft advises checking the computer manufacturer’s site when Windows does not detect an adapter. If you use a separate adapter, check its maker’s support information as well.
How to find the right driver in Windows
- Identify the adapter. Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the wireless adapter’s full name. If its name is unclear, check the computer maker’s specifications or support page for your exact model.
- Check the installed driver. In Device Manager, right-click the wireless adapter, choose Properties, then open the Driver tab to inspect its provider, date, and version.
- Confirm Windows compatibility. On the computer or adapter manufacturer’s support page, select the exact device and your Windows version. Use a package explicitly offered for that combination rather than choosing a result based only on “802.11n.”
- Install the package and check the connection again. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions. If the adapter is not detected, Microsoft notes that you may need to download and manually install its driver from the computer manufacturer.
If the adapter appears in Device Manager but is disabled, right-click it and choose Enable device. If no wireless adapter appears under Network adapters, Microsoft says Windows does not detect it; a driver installation may help, but also consider whether the adapter is disabled in hardware or unavailable to the system. Diagnose the symptom before reinstalling
Wi-Fi trouble can come from an undetected or disabled adapter, a driver problem, a band or frequency mismatch, or access-point settings. The symptom helps narrow down what to check first.

Microsoft’s Windows wireless connectivity troubleshooting guidance recommends collecting baseline information and noting when the problem reproduces before resetting network components, deleting profiles, removing an adapter or driver, or restarting. These steps can change behavior or remove useful evidence. The guidance applies to supported Windows 10 and Windows 11 versions; details can differ by Windows version, adapter, driver model, access point, and authentication method.

Check 802.11n and router settings carefully
Intel’s recommendations for the Intel adapters covered in its 802.11n connectivity settings guide, last reviewed February 5, 2025, include updating both adapter and router software and confirming the access point is configured for 11n mode. For those Intel adapters, the article recommends Auto channel width on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.

Intel’s guidance also distinguishes HT (802.11n) from VHT (802.11ac) for the relevant wireless-mode setting. Identify your hardware and follow its manufacturer’s documentation before changing advanced properties.

When to consider replacing the adapter
A replacement is an option only if the built-in adapter is unsupported, faulty, or unsuitable for the networks you need. Before buying an internal card or USB adapter, verify its compatibility with the computer, physical interface, supported operating system, frequency bands, and wireless modes. The fact that a product supports 802.11n does not establish that it will work in a particular computer.
For example, Intel provides support information for the Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7265, but that example does not establish compatibility with another computer. Check the computer maker’s specifications and the adapter vendor’s support information for your exact setup.
