802.11 security protocols are the standards and mechanisms Wi-Fi uses to control network access and protect wireless traffic. WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 are familiar security-generation labels; 802.1X and EAP handle authentication and access control, while TKIP and CCMP protect data. These terms describe related but different parts of Wi-Fi security.
What does “802.11 security protocol” mean?
IEEE 802.11 is the standards family for wireless LAN operation, including the way wireless devices communicate. Its security architecture brings together authentication and access control, key establishment, and protection of traffic confidentiality and integrity. In everyday conversation, people often call WEP, WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 “protocols,” but the labels do not all name the same technical layer.
WPA generations are Wi-Fi Alliance security labels and certification profiles built around elements of IEEE 802.11 security standards. They are not synonyms for the entire 802.11 standard. The IEEE Standards Association’s current listing identifies IEEE 802.11-2024; WPA3 is a Wi-Fi security generation label, not a separate IEEE edition.

| Term | What it means | Practical context |
|---|---|---|
| WEP | Wired Equivalent Privacy, an early 802.11 security mechanism. | Legacy and inherently flawed, according to NIST. IEEE material retains its definition for backward compatibility. |
| WPA | Wi-Fi Protected Access, an interim Wi-Fi Alliance approach developed while IEEE 802.11i work was being completed. | Associated with TKIP, an interim data-protection mechanism. |
| WPA2 | A Wi-Fi security label based on the completed 802.11i security approach. | Government guidance associates it with AES encryption and CCMP data protection. |
| WPA3 | A later Wi-Fi security generation label. | The cited IEEE listing establishes the current 802.11 edition, not detailed WPA3 certification or mode requirements. |
For historical context, the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security describes WEP as using RC4 for confidentiality with CRC32 for integrity, WPA as using RC4 with TKIP, and WPA2 as using AES with CCMP. These are high-level descriptions of the progression, not guarantees that every network bearing a particular label is secure. NIST’s 2007 guide describes WEP as inherently flawed, and IEEE’s 802.11-2020 page says WEP remains defined for backward compatibility with the original standard.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What TKIP and CCMP do
TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) and CCMP (Counter Mode with CBC-MAC Protocol) are data-protection mechanisms, not authentication systems. TKIP is associated with WPA’s interim approach; government guidance associates AES-CCMP with WPA2. IEEE’s standards materials identify CCMP as a data-protection mechanism.
The distinction matters because the cipher or protection mechanism is only one part of the security arrangement. Knowing that a network uses a particular mechanism does not, on its own, establish how users authenticate, how keys are managed, or whether the configuration and devices are otherwise secure.

What 802.1X and EAP mean for Wi-Fi
802.1X is a port-based network access control standard. In enterprise Wi-Fi, it is commonly used with EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) methods to authenticate users or devices and control access. EAP is a framework used by authentication methods, not the mechanism that encrypts each wireless frame.

A shared passphrase and an enterprise 802.1X/EAP login are different authentication approaches. TKIP and CCMP belong to the separate data-protection side. The U.S. General Services Administration describes EAP in the context of 802.11i wireless authentication, while NIST’s wireless security guide covers the transition away from WEP.

- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to read a router’s Wi-Fi security setting
When comparing actual network configurations, separate four questions rather than treating one label as a complete security assessment:
- Authentication and access control: Is access based on a shared passphrase or on 802.1X with an EAP method?
- Data protection: Is the configuration associated with legacy TKIP or AES-CCMP?
- Compatibility: Do older devices require legacy modes that affect what the network can use?
- Label and standard: Is a term an IEEE specification, a Wi-Fi Alliance generation label, or a mechanism within the security system?
A stronger data-protection mechanism does not prove that passwords, router firmware, or the rest of the configuration are secure. The IEEE SA listing also includes Amendment 6 on MAC Security Enhancements among its standards material, showing that security work continues within the 802.11 standards family; that listing alone does not establish deployment recommendations for consumer devices.
