800 Gigabit Ethernet (800GbE) is Ethernet operation at a nominal rate of 800 gigabits per second (Gb/s). IEEE Std 802.3df-2024 defines the Ethernet MAC parameters and physical-layer options for that rate. It specifies a family of implementations—not one universal cable, connector, or transceiver—and the nominal line rate is not a guarantee that applications will deliver 800 Gb/s of payload throughput.

What does 800GbE define?

IEEE Std 802.3df-2024 is the published IEEE amendment for 800 Gb/s Ethernet. Its full title is “IEEE Standard for Ethernet Amendment 9: Media Access Control Parameters for 800 Gb/s and Physical Layers and Management Parameters for 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s Operation.” IEEE lists the standard as active, with publication on March 15, 2024, and Board Approval on February 15, 2024. The amendment adds MAC parameters, physical layers (PHYs), and management parameters for transferring IEEE 802.3-format frames at 400 Gb/s and 800 Gb/s. IEEE’s 802.3df-2024 standard page describes its scope and status.

The 800 Gb/s figure is the Ethernet operating rate, not a measurement of application data transfer. Protocol overhead, traffic patterns, and endpoint capabilities affect how much user payload a system can move. It is also a rate in gigabits per second, not 800 gigabytes per second.

How does the lane architecture work?

IEEE’s overview describes 800GbE as a parallel, eight-lane (x8) architecture. Depending on the implementation, a port can be arranged as one eight-lane link, two four-lane links, four two-lane links, or eight one-lane links. This flexibility describes the architecture; it does not mean that every device supports every lane grouping or that arbitrary products will interoperate.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When specifying a link, check that both endpoints support the intended port and lane configuration, in addition to the selected PHY and media. The IEEE architecture overview provides additional context on the design.

What media and reach categories does the overview list?

IEEE’s 800 Gb/s summary covers copper, multimode fiber (MMF), and single-mode fiber (SMF). The distances below are categories shown in that overview, not universal guarantees for any cable or optical module; the specific PHY and product specifications determine whether a link is suitable.

Medium Reach categories shown for 800 Gb/s
Copper cable The overview lists copper but does not state a reach in the summarized 800 Gb/s row.
Multimode fiber (MMF) 50 m and 100 m
Single-mode fiber (SMF) 500 m and 2 km

These categories come from the IEEE 800 Gb/s overview. They should be read in conjunction with the applicable PHY details, not as a promise that any fiber, connector, or optic will support the stated distance.

What should you check before choosing an 800G link?

There is no single “800GbE cable” or transceiver that fits every implementation. Match the link components to the actual endpoints and PHY rather than choosing by the 800G label alone.

Anker USB C Hub, 7in1 Multi-Port USB Adapter, 4K@60Hz USBC to HDMI Splitter
  • Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
  • Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
  • Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
  • Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Medium and PHY: Determine whether the link uses twinaxial copper, multimode fiber, or single-mode fiber, and identify the specific PHY on each endpoint.
  • Distance: Select a PHY rated for the required link distance; do not extend a reach category to a different medium or implementation.
  • Lane and port configuration: Confirm that the host interfaces support the required lane structure and port breakout.
  • Physical compatibility: Verify the module or cable assembly, connector, fiber grade, host support, and vendor interoperability against product-level specifications.

IEEE’s overview establishes the broad media and lane categories, but it is not a procurement compatibility matrix. For example, 800GBASE-SR8 optical transceivers with multimode fiber assemblies and 800GBASE-CR8 twinaxial copper assemblies are categories a data-center designer may encounter; neither is automatically compatible with every host or link. Confirm the full standard and the equipment vendors’ specifications before selecting components.
