Archived websites are useful when a page has been redesigned, deleted, moved behind a paywall, or changed after an important event. The right tool depends on what you need: a visual timeline, a screenshot, a research dataset, a national collection, or a reliable citation copy.
No archive can recreate a page that nobody captured. Even when the HTML exists, its CSS, JavaScript, images, video, forms, and other assets may be missing. For the best chance of finding a specific page, search its full historical URL—not only the domain—and try alternate protocol and hostname variations.
Which old-website tool should you use?
| Tool | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Wayback Machine | General-purpose URL timelines | Some captures and dependent assets are missing |
| archive.today | Readable snapshots and screenshots | Not a complete website backup; rate limits may occur |
| OldWeb.today | Experiencing archived pages through older browser emulations | Depends on captures held by underlying archives |
| Library of Congress Web Archives | Government, elections, cultural and historical collections | Collection-based rather than a general URL-history service |
| Common Crawl | Technical research and bulk URL discovery | Requires index queries and WARC retrieval |
| Arquivo.pt | Portuguese and internationally crawled pages | Coverage differs from other archives |
| Ghostarchive | Exact URLs, wildcard searches and some media pages | Not a guaranteed full-site crawler |
| Perma.cc | Creating dependable citation copies of pages | Not a general historical search engine |
1. Internet Archive Wayback Machine
The Wayback Machine is the first place to check for an old version of a public webpage. Its current homepage displays Search the Wayback Machine and an input labelled enter URL or keywords. It also provides Save Page Now with an Enter a URL to save field.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to use it
- Open
https://web.archive.org/. - Paste the page URL into the search field. For example, use
https://example.com/products/old-modelinstead of onlyhttps://example.com. - Submit the search and choose a year from the timeline.
- Select a highlighted date, then select an available capture time.
- Use the archive toolbar to move between captures or inspect the page URL shown in the replay.
The Wayback Machine advertises a history of more than 1 trillion web pages, but that does not mean every website, path, or date is present. A domain may have a capture while a particular article, image, PDF, or stylesheet does not.

Fixing “Wayback Machine has not archived that URL”
Try the exact address as it existed at the time. Check all of these variations:
http://example.com/pageandhttps://example.com/pagewww.example.comandexample.com- The URL with and without a trailing slash
- A direct file address such as
/files/report.pdfor/images/logo.png - Old URL structures, query strings, capitalization, or language paths
A replay that looks broken is not necessarily empty. The HTML may have been captured while its CSS, JavaScript, images, video, or interactive functions were not. Forms and login areas generally cannot be treated as working copies of the original site.
Important: Save Page Now submits a new capture of the page as it appears when you use it. It does not find or recover an old version that was never archived.

archive.today, also encountered through archive.ph and related domains, stores snapshots that commonly include a replayable version of the page and a screenshot representation. It is particularly useful when you want a readable record of an article as it appeared at a particular point, rather than a long timeline of an entire domain.
Search for the page’s full URL and inspect the available stored results. A replay may preserve the original page and links, while the screenshot gives you a fixed visual reference if the replay no longer renders correctly.
Coverage is mainly focused on text and images. It should not be treated as a complete backup of a website: XML, RTF, spreadsheets, and other non-static content are excluded according to its documented coverage. JavaScript-heavy pages may capture partially, but authenticated content, forms, server-side functions, and interactive behavior may not work in the archived copy.
The service can also return 429 Too Many Requests, which indicates rate limiting rather than proof that the service has shut down. Because its interface can change and may block repeated requests, avoid publishing instructions that depend on a particular button label without checking the site first.
3. OldWeb.today
OldWeb.today combines historical web archives with emulations of older browsers. This makes it interesting when the goal is not merely to read old text, but to see how a page behaved or rendered in an earlier browser environment.
Enter a page and choose from the archive and browser options the service currently offers. The exact fields, browser selectors, and buttons can change, so treat the site’s live interface as authoritative.
OldWeb.today is not a universal archive with an independent copy of every website. It depends on captures available from underlying web archives. If no archive has a matching page and date, changing the emulated browser cannot manufacture the missing version.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Use it after checking the Wayback Machine when an older layout, browser limitation, or period-specific rendering matters. For a quick lookup, the Wayback Machine is usually more direct.
4. Library of Congress Web Archives
The Library of Congress Web Archives is valuable for selected historical subjects rather than arbitrary commercial websites. Its collections include areas such as elections, government, authors, climate change, music, courts, and significant historical events.
Open the Web Archives page and use Search Web Archives or browse Collections with Web Archives under Format Web Archive. The search interface includes View and Sort By selectors, each followed by a Go control.
The collection browser currently reports 35,281 web-archive results: 34,982 Web Page items, 146 PDFs, 28 Online Text items, 2 Audio items, and 2 Image items. Availability matters: the current facets show 27,571 items available online and 7,710 available at the Library of Congress campus.
This is not a general replacement for the Wayback Machine. A random small-business homepage may not appear because the Library of Congress does not maintain a universal URL timeline. It is strongest when the page belongs to a subject the library deliberately collected.

The service currently warns that upgrades may cause intermittent outages and that playback is a beta presentation with limited content. Some records may therefore be discoverable even when replay is incomplete.
5. Common Crawl
Common Crawl is for researchers, developers, and analysts—not for clicking through a visual calendar. Its public crawl data contains more than 300 billion pages across 15 years and adds approximately 3–5 billion pages each month.
To find an old URL, query a crawl index, identify the WARC file and byte range containing the response, then retrieve and parse that record. Common Crawl provides CDXJ and Apache Parquet-based URL Index formats. The index includes fields such as url, fetch_time, fetch_status, content_mime_type, warc_filename, warc_record_offset, and warc_record_length.
Athena setup
- Open the AWS Athena Query Editor.
- Switch to the
us-east-1region. - Select or create a location for query results.
- Run
CREATE DATABASE ccindex. - Register the current index table using the S3 location
s3://commoncrawl/cc-index/table/cc-main/warc/. - Query for the URL and filter by
fetch_time, status, or MIME type. - Run
MSCK REPAIR TABLE ccindexafter new crawl partitions are added, otherwise Athena may not see them.
The data is hosted in AWS US-East-1 at s3://commoncrawl/, with HTTP access through https://data.commoncrawl.org/. No AWS account is needed for HTTP access. Anonymous listing and copying use commands such as:
aws --no-sign-request s3 ls s3://commoncrawl/crawl-data/CC-MAIN-2018-17/segments/1524125937193.1/warc/
aws --no-sign-request s3 cp s3://commoncrawl/path_to_file/local_path/
Common Crawl is a good option when you need to prove that a URL was crawled, process thousands of records, or recover text programmatically. It is a poor option when you want a screenshot-like page history with no coding.

6. Arquivo.pt
Arquivo.pt is an active Portuguese web archive that also contains material beyond Portugal. Its interface is useful when the Wayback Machine has no result, because each archive has different crawl schedules and coverage.
The main search field is labelled Palavras ou URL, with a Pesquisar control. The current search types include Páginas, Imagens, Narrativa, and Pesquisa avançada. You can narrow results with the Search Date Slider and Slider Date Calendars. An English option is also available.
- Open Arquivo.pt and choose Nova pesquisa.
- Enter a phrase or the complete historical URL in Palavras ou URL.
- Choose Páginas or Imagens, depending on what is missing.
- Use the date controls to restrict the period.
- Open a result and inspect the archived replay.
A missing result here does not show that the page was never archived. It only means Arquivo.pt does not currently have a matching record; check the Wayback Machine, archive.today, or another service as well.
7. Ghostarchive
Ghostarchive provides separate functions to archive a webpage and search existing archives. Its search accepts exact URLs, ordinary terms, and wildcard patterns.
Examples shown by the service include:
googlehttps://docs.google.com*.github.io/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRwhttps://github.com/*
A pattern such as https://github.com/* searches URLs beginning with that pattern. It does not mean Ghostarchive has captured every GitHub page.
Ghostarchive can be useful for a specific page, some media-oriented URLs, or discovering captures with a wildcard. It is not a guaranteed full-site crawler. Test the replay, because dynamic functions, embedded services, login requirements, and assets hosted elsewhere may not survive archival.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Perma.cc
Perma.cc solves a different problem: creating a stable citation copy of a page you can access now. It is designed for scholarly, legal, journalistic, and institutional references—not for browsing a random website’s entire past.
Recommended Free Tools
Creating a Perma link
- Find the URL you need to preserve.
- Add it to Perma.cc.
- Select Create Perma Link.
- Save the resulting Perma URL in your document or reference list.
- Annotate or delete the record if necessary.
Perma captures the targeted page only. It does not automatically archive pages linked from that page, so create separate links for important sources. Perma archives are not made available to search engines.
Anyone can create an account, but free individual access depends on affiliation with a registrar organization; otherwise a paid subscription may be required. A link can be deleted only within 24 hours of creation. After that it enters the permanent collection and remains accessible if the account is later canceled or downgraded. “Permanent” should still be read carefully: Perma’s FAQ does not promise that literal permanent preservation can never fail, although it describes library participation and a shutdown contingency plan.
Downloaded Perma archives can be opened with WARC replay tools such as ReplayWeb.page. That is useful when you need to inspect or retain a local copy rather than rely only on the hosted viewer.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
How to improve your chances of finding a missing page
- Start with the complete URL. Article paths and file URLs are more precise than a domain-only search.
- Try URL variants. Check HTTP/HTTPS, www/non-www, trailing slashes, old subdomains, language folders, and query strings.
- Search for the asset separately. If the page is broken, look for its PDF, image, stylesheet, or downloadable document as a direct URL.
- Check several archives. Archives do not share identical crawl schedules or collections.
- Use date ranges realistically. A page may have been captured days or months away from the date you remember.
- Save evidence. Record the archive URL, capture timestamp, original URL, and screenshots if the result matters for research or a dispute.
- Do not confuse a new capture with an old one. Save Page Now and Perma.cc preserve what is available now; neither can reconstruct an uncaptured historical state.
Tools that should not be recommended as current solutions
Google Cache is gone. Old instructions using cache:example.com are obsolete; a Google “About this page” result that links to the Wayback Machine is not Google Cache.
Memento Time Travel is also shut down as a general-purpose archive finder. WebCite remains useful only as a legacy read-only archive: it no longer accepts new archive requests, although historical snapshots may still be viewable.
FAQ
Can I view an old version of any website?
Only if an archive captured the page or its assets at or near the period you need. No viewer can recreate a page that was never archived.
What is the easiest tool for viewing an old webpage?
Start with the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. Search the full page URL, choose a year, then select a highlighted capture date and time.
Why does an archived page look broken?
The HTML may have been captured without its CSS, JavaScript, images, video, or other dependent files. Interactive elements, forms, and login areas are especially likely to fail.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does Wayback Machine Save Page Now show the latest old copy?
No. Save Page Now submits a new capture of the page as it appears when you submit the URL. It does not retrieve a historical copy.
What should I use if Wayback Machine has no capture?
Try archive.today, Arquivo.pt, Ghostarchive, or OldWeb.today. For technical research, query Common Crawl. A missing result in one archive does not prove that no other archive has the page.
Is Common Crawl suitable for normal browsing?
Usually not. It provides crawl indexes and WARC data that must be queried and processed. It is better for developers and researchers than for a quick visual lookup.
What is the difference between Perma.cc and Wayback Machine?
Wayback is a general historical archive for finding existing captures. Perma.cc is a citation service for creating a preserved link to a page you can access now.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Bottom Line
Use the Wayback Machine first for a normal page-history search, then try archive.today, Arquivo.pt, Ghostarchive, or OldWeb.today when coverage or rendering is different. Use the Library of Congress for curated historical collections, Common Crawl for data-level investigation, and Perma.cc when you need to preserve a page for citation. Always save the exact archive URL and capture date—an archived page is evidence of what was captured, not a guarantee that the entire original website survived.
