Some home speakers are rated 8 ohms, but that number is a nominal rating—not a promise that the speaker stays at 8 ohms at every frequency. Before connecting speakers, check their nominal and minimum impedance, if stated, and confirm that your specific amplifier or receiver supports the load.

What does 8 ohms mean on a speaker?

Ohms measure impedance: how a circuit opposes alternating current. A speaker’s impedance changes as the audio signal’s frequency changes, so it does not behave like a fixed 8-ohm resistor. Focal explains that the familiar 4- or 8-ohm specification is generally based on midrange impedance at 1,000 Hz, and is only a partial indication of how a speaker behaves across the audible range. Focal’s explanation of loudspeaker impedance describes examples ranging from 3.5 to 25 ohms or more, depending on design and frequency; that is not a guaranteed range for every speaker.

Can an 8-ohm speaker dip below 8 ohms?

Yes. Micca says it is normal for many speakers labeled 8 ohms to dip to 4 ohms or lower. Focal, for example, says some of its own nominally 8-ohm speakers have a minimum impedance of 5 ohms. Those are manufacturer examples, not universal minimums. If a speaker’s specifications list a minimum impedance, consider it alongside the nominal rating when checking amplifier compatibility.

Can you use 8-ohm speakers with your receiver?

Often, but the answer depends on the receiver or amplifier model and the full speaker load—not just the “8 ohm” label. Sony warns that speakers rated below a receiver’s supported impedance may damage it; some Sony models specify an impedance range or include a switch. Micca says its own speakers work with most amplifiers or receivers rated for 6- or 8-ohm speakers, while advising caution because its 4–8-ohm rating indicates dips to 4 ohms. These are model- and product-specific statements, not a blanket compatibility rule.

  1. Find the speaker specifications. Note the nominal impedance and any stated minimum impedance.
  2. Check the amplifier or receiver label and manual. Look for its supported speaker impedance, any operating-mode or impedance-switch instructions, and restrictions on using more than one pair.
  3. Compare the complete setup. Account for every pair connected at the same time and follow the equipment maker’s instructions for that configuration.

If the manual does not clearly support the load, contact the manufacturer rather than assuming an 8-ohm nominal rating makes the setup safe. An ohm rating describes electrical load; it is not a sound-quality score, and the cited specifications do not establish that 8-ohm speakers sound better or worse than 4- or 6-ohm models.

What happens if you connect two pairs of 8-ohm speakers?

When two pairs are connected in parallel, the combined load is lower than that of one pair. Cambridge Audio says that two pairs of 8-ohm speakers present a 4-ohm combined impedance on its AXR85, AXR100 and AXR100D receivers. For those models, the company does not recommend connecting two pairs of 4- or 6-ohm speakers because overheating could damage the unit. This guidance applies to those named AXR models; check the manual for your own amplifier before using multiple speaker outputs.

For the CXA61, CXA81 and CXA81MKII, Cambridge Audio says both pairs should be nominally 8 ohms so the overall impedance does not fall below 4 ohms. The maker’s instructions differ by model, which is why using two pairs should not be treated as a universal “A/B speaker” feature.

How can you avoid overload or damage?

Follow the manual for the exact amplifier and speakers. For the speakers covered by its FAQ, Micca advises against listening when distortion is audible, says to stop if the amplifier’s protection activates, and recommends providing ventilation. Micca also says to enable a 4-ohm or high-current mode if the amplifier offers one; use that setting only as directed by your equipment’s maker. See Micca’s receiver-compatibility guidance and Sony’s speaker-impedance guidance.
