The best Kodi alternative depends on what you want Kodi to do: manage a personal library across devices, play files on one device, find content through add-ons, or record live television. Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby are server-and-client media systems; VLC is a general-purpose player; Stremio is an aggregator; and Channels DVR is built around live TV and recording. They are different kinds of tools, not eight interchangeable Kodi clones.
Use the guide below to match the software to your setup. Check the official product pages for current device support, feature requirements, and availability before choosing; those details can change by app, region, and version.
Choose by the job you need Kodi to do
First decide whether you need a shared library, simple playback, add-on discovery, or a TV recording setup. A server-and-client system can organize media in one place and serve it to supported apps. A local player opens files on the device where you use it. An aggregator organizes access through add-ons, whose sources and availability vary. A DVR platform focuses on live television and recordings.
| Your priority | Options to consider | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Organize a personal library and access it through client apps | Plex, Jellyfin, Emby | These use a server-and-client approach; check setup and client support for your devices. |
| Play files on a device without building a household library server | VLC | A general-purpose media player, rather than a server-and-client library. |
| Browse content through add-ons | Stremio | An aggregator; available sources depend on the add-ons you choose. |
| Use an Apple-focused media client | Infuse | Consider it for an Apple-centric setup; confirm support for your devices and library. |
| Turn a Windows living-room PC into a media center | MediaPortal | A Windows media-center option; check current release and tuner support. |
| Watch and record live television | Channels DVR; Plex may also fit | Live-TV setups can depend on a tuner, server, supported client, region, and service requirements. |
Eight Kodi alternatives, matched to their strengths
1. Plex: a library ecosystem with a live-TV option
Plex is a server-and-client ecosystem for organizing and streaming a personal media library to supported apps. It may also suit a live-TV setup, but that is not a plug-and-play capability in every configuration. Plex Support specifies Plex Media Server v1.16.1 or newer and DVR setup for full Live TV support, including time shifting. Check the current requirements and supported tuner information before buying hardware or configuring a system: Plex’s DVR tuner and antenna support guide.

In a supported app, a currently airing program in the guide may offer a Watch option as well as Record. Availability depends on the app and setup, so verify that your client supports the function you need.
2. Jellyfin: a self-hosted, open-source direction
Jellyfin is a useful option if you prioritize a free, open-source, local-first media system and want to run your own library server. As with any server-and-client setup, confirm that current clients are available for your exact TV, streaming box, phone, or computer, and check the project’s documentation for installation and feature requirements. Do not assume that every client offers the same features.
3. Emby: another server-and-client library
Emby is another personal-media option built around a server and client apps. It is worth considering if your goal is to manage a library centrally and access it from supported devices. Confirm current plan terms, feature availability, and client compatibility directly with Emby; this guide does not establish current prices or which features require a paid plan.

4. Stremio: an add-on-based aggregator
Stremio organizes access to content through add-ons, so it is not a direct replacement for a local media-center player or a server that manages your own files. Add-on availability and the sources they connect to vary. Check the legality and reliability of each source in your location rather than treating every add-on as equivalent.
5. VLC: straightforward playback
VLC is the fit to consider when you mainly want to open and play media files, not maintain a shared household library. It is a general-purpose player, so compare its current support for your device and the formats you use before switching. This guide does not establish exact codec behavior across all devices.
6. Infuse: an Apple-focused client
Infuse is an Apple-focused media client and may suit a household centered on Apple devices. Confirm current platform availability and whether it works with the library source and file organization you already use. It should not be treated as a universal server replacement without checking that fit.

8. Channels DVR: a live-TV and recording specialist
Channels DVR belongs on a live-TV and DVR shortlist, not as a general-purpose local-file player. Before committing, verify regional availability, compatibility with your provider and devices, and current pricing with the service. It is most relevant if watching or recording live television is the main reason you are replacing Kodi.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What a live-TV setup requires
Live television is the part most likely to need extra hardware or configuration. A tuner is relevant only if the DVR approach you choose requires and supports one; it is not a general Kodi replacement purchase. Check the exact tuner model against the software’s current compatibility information and your region before buying.
- Server: Determine whether the selected product needs a media server running on a computer or other host.
- Tuner and signal: Confirm whether your intended service requires a tuner, which model it supports, and whether it works with your local signal and region.
- Client app: Verify that the app on your TV or streaming device supports live viewing and recording features.
- Service terms: Check current plan, provider, and regional requirements directly with the DVR service.
For Plex specifically, its support documentation names Plex Media Server v1.16.1 or newer plus DVR setup for full Live TV support including time shifting. Requirements may have changed, so consult the current Plex tuner and antenna guide before setting up.
Quick Recap
How to make the switch without choosing the wrong category
- List the devices you actually use. Include the TV, streaming box, computer, and phones. Check each product’s official client list rather than relying on broad platform claims.
- Decide whether you need a server. Choose a server-and-client system for a centrally managed library; choose a local player if you primarily open files on one device.
- Separate your content sources. Personal files, add-on-based discovery, and live television have different setup and availability requirements. Pick the option based on the source you need to replace.
- Check live-TV requirements before purchasing anything. Confirm tuner, server version, client support, region, and plan or provider requirements for the specific DVR product.
- Test with your own library and devices. Confirm that your files appear and play as expected in the clients you plan to use before moving an entire household workflow.
Which Kodi alternative should you choose?
- For a managed personal library across devices: Compare Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby, then choose based on server setup, client availability, and current feature terms.
- For local playback: Start with VLC if the main task is opening files rather than maintaining a shared library.
- For add-on discovery: Consider Stremio, while evaluating the source and legality of each add-on individually.
- For an Apple-centric household: Check whether Infuse supports your devices and library arrangement.
- For a Windows HTPC: Look at MediaPortal and verify current release and tuner details.
- For live TV and recording: Compare Channels DVR and the DVR capabilities of a media-server ecosystem such as Plex, checking all hardware and regional prerequisites first.
