Some of the most unsettling horror games make sound do more than announce a scare: it can reveal danger, make a space feel vast or claustrophobic, and leave you listening for what might happen next. These eight selections are not a measured ranking or proof that sound is objectively better than jump scares. They highlight different ways audio can carry tension, using examples documented by the developers and reporting cited below.
How these games use sound
The useful distinction is whether audio gives you information, reacts to what you do, establishes space, conveys a character’s perspective, or shapes the quiet stretches between major events. Some games use several of those approaches at once. The picks below are organized by what their sound design does particularly well, not by an overall score.

Sound that changes what you dare to do
Alien: Isolation
In Alien: Isolation, sound can be a gameplay risk. Creative lead Alistair Hope told PlayStation.Blog that the Alien reacts to player behavior and movement: sprinting creates noise that can attract it. You are not simply listening for the monster; you have to consider what your own movement may reveal. The score is also adjusted and remixed in real time to support events and actions on screen. Hope’s interview on PlayStation.Blog describes audio as part of both the threat and the response to it.
The Callisto Protocol
The Callisto Protocol uses familiar mechanical sounds as a source of unease, with small alterations that make the environment feel less trustworthy. Director Glen Schofield also described music as punctuation around events, rather than a constant signal that something frightening is about to happen. In an August 2022 interview, Schofield reported “more than 200,000 individual sounds” in the game and “more than 60 unique sounds” for parts of Jacob’s spacesuit. Those are developer-reported production counts, not independently audited measures of quality. Read Schofield’s PlayStation.Blog interview.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Sound that makes a place feel real—and wrong
SOMA
SOMA distinguishes the underwater world from the air-filled spaces of Pathos-II through contrasting soundscapes. Audio director Samuel Justice said the goal was for players to recognize where they were even with the visuals turned off. A system also varies audio in relation to room size, including the sounds Simon makes, helping spaces feel acoustically different rather than interchangeable. The team used hydrophones and contact microphones for underwater recordings, and Simon’s underwater sounds were binaural. Justice explains the choices in Frictional Games’ behind-the-sound article.
Dead Space (remake)
The Dead Space remake uses sound to make its ship feel like a physical space: EA describes audio occlusion through materials and down hallways, so sounds can be muffled or shaped by what lies between Isaac and their source. The A.L.I.V.E. system also controls Isaac’s heart rate, breathing, and dialogue delivery, tying his audible reactions to his condition.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
The Intensity Director coordinates audio with lighting and events, varying when and how elements appear. EA audio director Olivier Asselin explained that repeating or withholding an expected sound changes whether a moment feels predictable or surprising. As he put it, “it’s always about putting the player in a place where they don’t know what to expect.” EA’s account mentions more than 1,200 unique events, depending on how they are counted. EA’s audio-development article and Intensity Director overview explain the systems.

Sound that puts you inside a character’s experience
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II uses binaural voices placed around the player to represent Senua’s auditory experience. Instead of treating voices only as background atmosphere, the design makes their apparent position part of how the character’s perspective is conveyed. A Game Developer report on principal sound designer Daniele Galante’s 2025 GDC presentation notes that binaural audio does not work identically for everyone and identifies headphones as the best way to experience this design. Headphones are an optional way to hear the spatial effect; no particular model is required by that recommendation. Read Game Developer’s report on the soundscape.
Rank #3
- Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
- Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
- The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
- The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
- This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.
Which sound-led horror should you choose?
- For sound as a stealth decision: choose Alien: Isolation, where noisy movement can draw the Alien.
- For environmental immersion: choose SOMA, which uses contrasting underwater and air soundscapes and makes room acoustics matter.
- For shifting tension and uncertainty: try the Dead Space remake, where the Intensity Director coordinates audio with other events.
- For spatial audio tied to a character’s experience: try Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II; headphones can help reveal its binaural placement.
- For threatening machinery and event-focused musical punctuation: consider The Callisto Protocol.
These examples show why “sound instead of jump scares” is not a strict either-or. Audio can make a scare more effective, but it can also sustain dread through information, space, and uncertainty when no sudden shock occurs.
