There is no single best ecommerce plugin for every WordPress store. WooCommerce is the broadest WordPress-native fit for mixed catalogs; Easy Digital Downloads is tailored to downloads; and Shopify, BigCommerce, and Ecwid connect WordPress to hosted commerce services. Membership sellers may prefer MemberPress, while WP EasyCart is another option for physical and digital products.

The seven products below are the shortlist in Shopify’s October 10, 2025 comparison—not the result of independent hands-on testing or a complete market survey. Choose by product type, where checkout and store management run, and the full cost of operating the store.

Which WordPress ecommerce plugin fits your store?

Plugin or service Best fit Where commerce runs Key qualification
WooCommerce Physical, digital, or mixed catalogs that need WordPress-native store controls Within the WordPress site The core is free and open source; hosting, payment processing, extensions, and upkeep may add costs.
Easy Digital Downloads Downloadable files and other digital goods Within the WordPress site Some capabilities, including access to software, services, memberships, and content, are described for Pro rather than the free core.
Sell on WordPress (Shopify) An existing content-first site that needs product or collection blocks and Shopify-managed commerce Shopify-hosted commerce connected to WordPress The plugin is free to download, but Shopify’s October 2025 article says a Shopify plan is required.
BigCommerce for WordPress A WordPress frontend paired with a separate hosted commerce backend BigCommerce backend connected to WordPress Performance benefits described on its product page are vendor claims, not independent benchmarks.
Ecwid Ecommerce Shopping Cart Connecting an existing Ecwid store to WordPress or creating one Ecwid store connected to WordPress Check current plan limits and feature availability for your region.
MemberPress Membership access and recurring subscriptions WordPress membership setup Shopify’s comparison says it lacks dedicated physical-product and one-time transaction features; it is not a general cart substitute.

What to know about each option

WooCommerce: a flexible WordPress-native store

Choose WooCommerce when you want a store built into WordPress and need room for physical products, digital goods, product variations, shipping and tax settings, and a choice of payment integrations. Its core platform is free and open source, but that does not make the complete store cost-free.

WooCommerce’s current pricing page estimates hosting at $25–$350 per month for most stores and extensions at $29–$299 per year each. These are WooCommerce estimates, not universal prices; costs depend on the store and specific extensions. Check the WooCommerce pricing page for current details.

Easy Digital Downloads: for selling files

For downloads such as ebooks, audio, video, documents, or images, Easy Digital Downloads is the most directly focused choice in this group. Its WordPress.org listing names formats including PDF, DOC, MP3, MOV, EPUB, PSD, MP4, and JPG. The plugin’s feature information also describes secure delivery, access controls, subscriptions, payment gateways, reports, and integrations.

Do not assume every listed feature comes with the free core plugin: the official WordPress.org page identifies access to software, services, memberships, and content as available with Pro. Review the WordPress.org plugin listing and official features page against your requirements.

Sell on WordPress: Shopify commerce on a content site

This option suits a WordPress site that already publishes content and needs to display products or collections while managing commerce through Shopify. Shopify’s October 10, 2025 comparison says the WordPress plugin is free to download but requires a Shopify plan starting at $5 per month at that time. Pricing and plan terms can change; verify the current offer and what it includes before committing.

BigCommerce for WordPress: separate hosted backend

BigCommerce pairs a WordPress frontend with its hosted commerce backend. Its product page describes Gutenberg blocks and says catalog updates and order management can be handled without affecting WordPress site performance. That is BigCommerce’s own description, not an independently measured performance result. BigCommerce calls its approach headless and says it lets merchants design with WordPress, its low- or no-code tools, or both.

This structure can appeal if you want WordPress for the customer-facing site but prefer commerce operations to run in a separate service. Confirm that the integration supports your catalog, payment, shipping, tax, and regional requirements. See BigCommerce for WordPress.

Ecwid: connect an existing store or start one

Ecwid’s WordPress documentation explains that the plugin can connect an existing Ecwid account and store or create a new one, then creates a Store page in WordPress. Shopify’s comparison also describes multichannel capabilities, but availability may depend on the current Ecwid plan. Check the Ecwid WordPress setup documentation and confirm plan-specific details.

MemberPress: membership access, not a standard product catalog

Consider MemberPress when the product is access to a membership, rather than a conventional catalog of physical goods. Shopify’s comparison says it does not provide dedicated physical-product or one-time transaction features. If you need ordinary carts and one-off purchases, choose a store-focused plugin instead.

WP EasyCart: another physical-and-digital option

Shopify’s comparison presents WP EasyCart as serving physical and digital products. The available official product documentation and current pricing were not established here, so treat that description as a starting point and verify the details directly with WP EasyCart before deciding.

How to choose without overlooking operating costs

  1. List what you sell. Separate physical goods, downloadable files, recurring membership access, and mixed catalogs. A plugin optimized for downloads or subscriptions may not cover a conventional cart workflow.
  2. Decide where commerce should run. WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads, MemberPress, and WP EasyCart are WordPress-focused options. Shopify, BigCommerce, and Ecwid connect WordPress to an external commerce service. With a hosted backend, verify which tasks remain in WordPress and which require the service’s own account or dashboard.
  3. Write down must-have catalog and checkout requirements. Check product variations, download controls, inventory, subscriptions, payment methods, tax, shipping, and channels. A feature listed by a vendor does not establish that it is included in every plan or available in every country.
  4. Calculate the full recurring cost. Include hosting, the commerce plan if required, payment processing, paid extensions, support, and maintenance. A free plugin download or free core does not tell you the total cost of running the store.
  5. Check compatibility on your own site. Confirm theme, plugin, hosting, payment-provider, and regional compatibility. Test the intended setup on a staging site before moving it into production; no performance outcome is established for these plugins here.

Is WooCommerce free?

WooCommerce describes its core platform as free and open source. The store may still incur hosting, transaction-processing, paid-extension, support, and maintenance costs. Its published hosting and extension ranges are estimates, so price the specific setup you plan to run rather than treating the plugin download as the total cost.

Are these plugins tested?

No comparative hands-on test is established for this shortlist. Shopify’s October 10, 2025 article identifies the seven options, but the available material does not document a common test environment, plugin versions, criteria, or results. Treat the choices as use-case recommendations, then validate compatibility and workflows on your own staging site.
